I've got to get some gallbladder testing done because it's causing me some discomfort. It may or may not have to be removed. As most people are aware, we can live without it. That got me thinking about other things such as the appendix (which is especially useless and heinous, as it does literally nothing but can take your life) and tonsils. Things that are mostly useless and pointless but can cause severe problems. Why? Why even create them?
These things are not useless. The gallbladder serves an important function. Some don't have problems when it's removed, but many do, of varying degrees of seriousness.

The appendix, we were told for decades, was a vestigial organ serving no purpose. But now they discover that it acts as a repository for good bacteria in the colon. When the colon is purged of its contents, through sickness or antibiotics, afterward the appendix reseeds it with a stored microbiome sample. These beneficial microbes are critical to good health.

The spleen cleanses the blood of dead red blood cells. Yes, the body can perform that function in other ways, but not as efficiently. If you ever have Babesia, or any other disease attacking red blood cells, having your spleen intact could well be the difference between life and death.

Tonsils I don't know about.

There are many ways to deal with problems with these organs, through foods and herbals. If you're having gallbladder problems I would start with daily ingestion of beets, and also celery.

I think it's fantastic that our body is so adaptable that it can survive without some of the organs that we are born with.... Spleen, gal bladder, appendix, ovaries, uterus, testicles, even one kidney..... or a lung.

Thing is, these things do serve a purpose. Just because we can survive without them, doesn't mean that they are not purposeful...

The systems and components of our body, and the bodies of all of God's creatures, are fearfully and wonderfully made...

To think that all of this could have come out of randomness... is a slap in God's face.

I am not sure any body part is useless. I read a book by a famous investor who said he knew a doctor who made a lot of money removing healthy gall bladders.

Unnecessary surgery is lucrative.

i hope all's well with your gallbladder. i had my appendix removed when it acted up. i think that we have useless yet potentially deadly body parts because it's nature's population control.

The reason God created these "useless" parts of our body, is because they are parabolic. They are spiritual lessons about who we are, and who God is.

Because there’s a difference between “it does nothing” and “we can live without it.” We can live just fine without fingers, but saying they don’t do anything is obviously untrue. We can live fabulously well without legs and remove/lessen the chance of everything from broken bones, broken hips, to blood clots. That said, they clearly serve a function.

And, it goes without saying that there is also a very big difference between “this serves no purpose” and “I don’t know what purpose they serve.” In your case, you don’t know what gallbladders, the appendix, or tonsils do, but that doesn’t mean they don’t do anything. I have Crohn’s Disease and let me tell you, I’m quite happy to still have my functioning appendix, thank you. It would make managing the improper functioning of the organs I need much, much more difficult.

Obviously there's no biblical answer for this and I might catch a little static for it. But I'll throw it out there anyway.

I've often wondered if the way we eliminate waste was God's first choice in the creation of Adam and Eve.

I seriously can't see Adam and Eve in their pre-fall state going behind some bushes in the Garden of Eden and doing their business - then using leaves to clean up. What a messy, smelly garden that would have been in time.

Further - I find it hard to picture us doing the same kind of duty in our glorified bodies for eternity whether in Heaven or on the New Earth.

We don't have to get any more detailed here than what I've said. You can think about more detail yourself I suppose.

I am serious. Go ahead and call me weird. But we are talking about body parts here and it's as good a place to consider it as any.

I do wonder if God originally had something else in mind in the beginning and if not if He does for the future. I'm sure He can come up with something if we all pray about it.:)

Evolutionists call them vestigial organs, but they're far from useless. They are considered vestigial because evos think they are remnants from a past evolutionary form. I think this is why you consider them useless. Some people have to have them removed like a person may lose a limb to gangrene or accident.

There are no useless body parts. The list of vestigial structures is itself a useless structure that has continually shrunk over the years, because it is useless.
There are still one or two things left that medical science does not fully understand.

I can see the thread title coming soon...”Did Adam and Eve poop?”

*edit* For the record my position would be yes, both pre and post fall. LOL!

Of course we can't - if they truly are useless, of course. But we have body parts that, although we do not need them, do function for our benefits.

The appendix originally was a functional part of the colon. It shrunk and stopped doing what it did. I read somewhere people in undeveloped nations still need it because their food and drinks are not sterilized. So the question I have is why did God make it stop functioning?

I guess I'm full of old science and wives tales that says they're useless because I honestly thought that.

Well, don't plan on things being perfect?
I know 2 ladies that had their gallbladders removed a couple years back and both have continued to have problems. One had to have a stint put into her bio duck and now she's going back in to be scoped again.

God just may have put them there for a purpose?
Best to keep what we can.
Realizing that some need to be removed.
Hope all goes well.

Perhaps each organ had uses earlier in human evolution?

I've had my appendix removed, so far no net difference (but I almost died because it ruptured). Some think the appendix acts as a storage unit of good bacteria if that's the case that good bacteria did me no good after it ruptured.

As for the gallbladder, it's a bile factory and bile helps digest fatty foods. You will have to tell us how useless you think your gallbladder was after it's removed.

The tonsils are your first defence against viruses to kill them before they enter the body. If they hurt just think if they weren't there it could be your lungs instead. The Ancients didn't have meds as we do so we may feel these things are less important because we can just take a pill. I think without a world of penicillin I'm going to want my tonsils, it may mean I've got to suffer some scratchy throats but it also may mean without those scratchy throats I'd die of pneumonia.

I'd be interested in a comparison with our incorruptible bodies to see what upgrades happened.

I'm sure they all serve some purpose, even if we don't understand it. Besides this body of ours is a temporary home, it's the spirit that is perfect.

At some point, all parts were used. Sin (decay) takes its toll.

Sin has nothing to do with a body part becoming useless. It kills people. Body parts simply stop working - if they are not needed anymore.

How many organs are unnecessary? The question makes me think of the acanthocephalan, a parasitic worm with so few organs that it's generally regarded as not much more than a barb, a gonad and some skin. It spends its days just sitting there, doing nothing but absorbing nutrients. It's so firmly planted that doctors are advised against ever removing it. This is a picture of what a living thing looks like with all unnecessary organs removed. It leaves us wondering why the remaining organs aren't also removed, because it makes the entire organism unnecessary.

The sum of a whole lot of mostly useless organs is an organism that is not mostly useless. Remove everything mostly useless, and the whole organism becomes mostly useless.
