"5 The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6 The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you..."

My pastor put it like this: when Jesus sets out how they must forgive (in Luke 17:4), the apostles ask for more faith and Jesus responds by telling them to live out the faith that they have.

We should note that this is a teaching session for disciples before the Lord. Lk. 17:3-4 are together showing a need for a Godly spirit; and verses 5 & 6 challenges the disciples about what is real faith, meaning there is no limit to the power of a real Godly faith.
