Should Christians celebrate Halloween? Opinions differ between Christian leaders, lay people and church members.

According to a CBN News Facebook poll, 87% of believers feel that Christians should not celebrate Halloween, while 13% believe it's okay.

Former Satanist John Ramirez recently joined Charlene Aaron on CBN News' Prayer Link to talk about Christians and Halloween.

"I was a general to the kingdom of darkness in witchcraft," Ramirez said. "I would sit with the Devil and talk to him like I'm talking to you today. It was that kind of communication. It was that kind of relationship."

Ramirez warns Halloween isn't just about costumes and candy – there's a much darker reality.

"Sometimes people say, 'I celebrated Halloween 10 years ago, I did this 15 years ago, I did this 20 years ago.' But the door's still open. You just cursed your family from three to four generations," Ramirez told CBN News.

"You have to be aware it's a curse. You have to go back to the place where you started, that year that you started that Halloween thing, the celebration when you started having that encounter with the dark side. You have to go back to that same spot and renounce and renounce it in the name of Jesus Christ and ask God to forgive you for that so that God can have mercy and close that door so your whole family can move forward," he continued.

Greetings,

I am aware of its origins and the other festivals associated with Pagan practices. I made a decision we wouldn’t bring those traditions into our home when I came to faith.

We acknowledge Jewish holidays and celebrate Christ’s death and resurrection as a daily reality. I enjoy decorating the house as the seasons change. But I’m leery of mixture and practices that don’t glorify the Lord.

I've always decorated for Halloween. But, I do wonder sometimes if it's the Christian thing to do or not.

I think intent is the issue, if it's for fun...I don't see a problem with it.

Hello Chrystal. The clincher for me regarding Halloween was several years back when I saw in a supermarket Halloween Ouija boards targeted at children. Ouija boards are doorways to danger. How can something holy and righteous and good contain such evil? It can't, therefore Halloween is not Holy and righteous and good.

I have heard some Christians talk about celebrating Halloween, saying they can Christianise it, control the evil, divide the good from the bad and most importantly have fun. That's what it's all about- having fun. Nothing trumps fun. It can't be wrong if it's fun can it? Fun. Pass out a gospel tract with the candy, sanitise the devil.

IMHO 'Christians' who celebrate Halloween are deluded.

God Bless :)

That's a novel way for discerning between good and evil, the presence or absence of 'fun'. After all I'm sure the devil wouldn't disguise anything, would he?

My family and I do not participate in it OTHER THAN taking our kids to church where they give out candy and the kids dress up in non-horrific costumes. The event is God-themed and God-focused. I am not interested in giving the enemy any attention.

PS - We have Christian friends who celebrate Halloween and yes, we're still friends. ^_^

I have seen some groups have a Fall Festival instead of Halloween party. Some hand out candy and other snacks, play games and costumes are allowed but not the monster, demons, goblins etc. type.

Bad judgment, brethren.

We should always remember the WWJD question ;)
Would Jesus celebrate Halloween with us, or rebuke us?

spiritualchristian,

I exchange gifts with family and friends. But I haven’t decorated in quite a while and mirth is a constant in our home. I seek the maintain a spirit of cheer and goodwill as a constant. We live out the principles the holidays reflect and make them our standard.

However, due to my singleness, I’m willing to compromise and embrace new traditions or reshape my own. It’s important the home reflects our shared values.

Why are you having a change of heart?

After my occult days, when I was following Christ, I saw (almost) everything around me as deception; Christmas being one of them. I saw it as a pagan, man-made tradition. *there's also something about decorating trees that's pagan in the OT. (I heard)

But now I've kind of changed my mind about Christmas, because I think the devil was just perverting what's good to be bad in my head. Until now I don't really know if the wisdom I got was from God or from the devil. I was pretty skeptic about almost anything in the world, basically.

We have to put it under the blood of Jesus if we have issues from our past that we need to deal with. I can not pass out the candy. I either make my wife do it or she gets someone to do it. She likes to go around with the kids: nephews and nieces. Although she does not like the scary decorations.

I don't pass out candy anymore. No one comes to my door and no one on my street passes out candy.

I used to decorate for fall. I still like fall decorations, but I keep that to a stark minimum.

When I was a new Christian someone told me I shouldn't celebrate Christmas. Well, it was celebrated in the Bible to honor Christ!

I don't pass out candy either. Here (in Detroit) most kids go to the recreation center for a Halloween party.
I used to think nothing of putting a few Halloween decorations on my porch, but this year I felt a weird "vibe" as I was putting the stuff up. (Like someone was watching me.) So, I wanted to know what other Christians did (or didn't do) for Halloween.
Thanks for the replies!

I don't do gore or super dark stuff. I love Autumn and do more of a harvest theme with some goofy characters. I just made some pumpkin parents and I'm in the process of finishing their son up now. I'll post pictures when I go into town today.
