I would like to take a look at some of the key words used in Reve 11:1, 2 in relation to the OT and Revelation and perhaps bring more clarification to that divine Covenantle Book

The word "Sanctuary"<3485>
The majority of Bible versions use the word "Temple"<2411>, which is never used in Revelation.

Here are the verses where the word Temple is used in YLT:

Genesis 1:1 (YLT)
G2411 ἱερόν (hieron) occurs 71 times in 67 verses [not used in Revelation]

Now the word Sanctuary is used in YLT:

It is 1st used in Luke concerning John the Baptist' father, who was a Priest of the course of Abjah and he is seen in the Sanctuary of God during the hour of making and burning incense.
He is also visited by the Arch Angel Gabriel who announces the future birth of John the Baptist.

It appears to be the only place outside of Revelation showing a Priest performing this ceremony in the NT.
G3485 is 1st used in Luke in only 4 verses

Is earthly Jerusalem the "holy city" in Revelation 11?

Gal 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

The word "Sanctuary"<3485>
You have to start at the Beginning. This is the first letter in the Bible: B. The letter B represents a tent that people dwell in. Moses develops this idea of a tent with the tabernacle that contains the Holy of Holies. This is where Creator dwells with His Creation. Later on the tabernacle becomes a temple in Jerusalem. In the New Testament we the Church are the Temple of God. WE provide a sanctuary for God to dwell in. If you are talking about the New Jerusalem that is the entire Arab Continental plate: 1500 by 1500 by 1500 miles. The pattern remains the same as it was with the Tabernacle in the desert.

As I have just shown, the word "Temple" is never once used in Revelation.
Use a better Bible version like YLT which renders words lie Age, Land/World, Gehenna, Temple, Sanctuary more accurately.

Once again, the word "Temple" is not in Revelation.......
Perhaps that is why Futurists and Dispenstionalist misinterpret Revelation............

Get a version that accurately renders the Greek........;)

The Golden Altar of Incense (The Tabernacle)

The Golden Altar of Incense was 2 cubits tall.
It was 1 cubit square with a crown of gold around the top and it had 4 golden horns


It was the Golden Altar of Incense which was straight ahead, before the veil, this third piece of furniture in the Holy Place on which the holy incense was burned. Made from acacia wood overlaid with pure gold it stood higher than any other article of furniture in the holy place, 2 cubits (3 feet) tall.
It was one cubit square and it had around the top a crown of gold. It had four golden horns just as the bronze altar in the courtyard. Lower down on each side there were golden rings to insert the poles for carrying.
Exod 30:1-10 "You shall make an altar to burn incense on; you shall make it of acacia wood. A cubit shall be its length and a cubit its width-- it shall be square-- and two cubits shall be its height. Its horns shall be of one piece with it. And you shall overlay its top, its sides all around, and its horns with pure gold; and you shall make for it a molding of gold all around. Two gold rings you shall make for it, under the molding on both its sides. You shall place them on its two sides, and they will be holders for the poles with which to bear it. You shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And you shall put it before the veil that is before the ark of the Testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the Testimony, where I will meet with you. Aaron shall burn on it sweet incense every morning; when he tends the lamps, he shall burn incense on it. And when Aaron lights the lamps at twilight, he shall burn incense on it, a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations. You shall not offer strange incense on it, or a burnt offering, or a grain offering; nor shall you pour a drink offering on it. And Aaron shall make atonement upon its horns once a year with the blood of the sin offering of atonement; once a year he shall make atonement upon it throughout your generations. It is most holy to the LORD."
- It had 4 horns of gold, one with it, a horn on each corner. (4-camps, e.Judah, s.Ruben, w.Ephraim, n.Dan, all Gods people)

The golden altar was used for burning incense, which twice every day was offered by the priest after he had tended the wick and oil on the holy lamps. Its horns were also sprinkled with the blood of the sin offering.

The incense was a mixture of three rich and rare spices, which cannot be identified today. These were blended with frankincense and beaten to a fine powder and then salt was added. It was totally forbidden for this formula to be used by any private individual. It had to be used only in the worship of God in the holy place.
Ex 30:34-38 And the LORD said to Moses: "Take sweet spices, stacte and onycha and galbanum, and pure frankincense with these sweet spices; there shall be equal amounts of each. You shall make of these an incense, a compound according to the art of the perfumer, salted, pure, and holy. And you shall beat some of it very fine, and put some of it before the Testimony in the tabernacle of meeting where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. But as for the incense which you shall make, you shall not make any for yourselves, according to its composition. It shall be to you holy for the LORD. Whoever makes any like it, to smell it, he shall be cut off from his people."
The incense was burnt on pieces of hot coal, which the priest removed in a censer or fire pan from the altar of burnt offering in the courtyard. A censer apparently was a shallow bowl or pan with a handle on it. It could be also be used for removing the ashes from the altar or gathering up the burnt parts of the wick from the lampstand.

The golden altar was used for burning incense

Poured out on burning coals the incense produced a delightful aroma in the Holy Place. It was the offering of the person whose sins had been forgiven by blood and who then went on to express the fragrance of love and worship, which was most pleasing to God.

The Golden Altar speaks to us of the worship of Jesus Christ and God's people through him as our high priest and mediator. It was only on the basis of His one sacrifice on the altar of the cross that worship is made possible. The coals, which lit the incense, was carried from the altar of sacrifice to the altar of incense.
Lev 16:12 "Then Aaron shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil.
- The sweet incense was to be kept burning at all times.

- It was before the veil, and the throne of God (Jesus for us)
On The Journey
Num 4:11 "Over the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, and cover it with a covering of badger skins; and they shall insert its poles.
Example of Moses' intercession:
Num 16:41-50 On the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of the LORD." Now it happened, when the congregation had gathered against Moses and Aaron, that they turned toward the tabernacle of meeting; and suddenly the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. Then Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of meeting. And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment." And they fell on their faces. So Moses said to Aaron, "Take a censer and put fire in it from the altar, put incense on it, and take it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the LORD. The plague has begun." Then Aaron took it as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and already the plague had begun among the people. So he put in the incense and made atonement for the people. And he stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped. Now those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the Korah incident. So Aaron returned to Moses at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, for the plague had stopped.

A Type of Christ

The golden altar of incense tells us of the ministry of Jesus as our intercessor whose prayers never stop ascending to God on our behalf. Jesus said to Peter, "I have prayed for you." The four horns speak of Christ's ministry extending to the four corners of the earth. He will always pray for His own no matter where they are. He can intercede on our behalf because of the atoning work on the cross of Calvary. The incense was fueled by the fire from the altar. It is not just anyone praying for us but the King Himself as represented by the crown of gold. He knows our weaknesses and our failings and He is praying for us always.

John appears to be in a type of OC wilderness Tabernacle, where he sees a Menorah with 7 golden candlesticks [or 7 Menorahs?].

Revelation 1:

And having turned<1994> I saw seven golden Lampstands<3087>,
13 and in the midst of the seven Lampstands [One] like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the paps with a golden band.


While he is standing there, he hears a Voice BEHIND him.
He TURNS and sees Jesus in midst of lamp-stands. ["turn" can also mean convert]

Symbolically, John would have been facing the OC Table of Show bread...North.

The Golden Altar
and inner curtain, Ark of Covenant would have been on his left...West

Then be turns, facing Jesus and the Lamp-stands...South

The outer veil/entrance would then be on his left .....East

In essence, John is first facing the Table of OC Show-bread and when he turns, he sees the NC "Living Bread", Jesus,

John 6:
48 I am the bread of life.
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.”

Something perhaps interesting to note would be the following.

Revelation 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

Assuming the above is to be understood like such---

And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure (1)the sanctuary of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein.
But the court which is without the sanctuary leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto (2)the Gentiles: and (3)the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.


Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

and (2)the people of the prince that shall come(Revelation 13:3-8) shall destroy (3)the city and (1)the sanctuary

Both passages mention a sanctuary, a city, and a people destroying it. On the surface that might appear to fit with what occurred in 70 AD. But if the prince that shall come is meaning the beast in Revelation 13 though, a 70 AD interpretation of Daniel 9:26 and Revelation 11:1-2 are unlikely in that case.

IMO anyway, the destroying of the city and sanctuary is not meaning in a literal sense, as in it involving a literal city, etc.

And the altar, and them that worship therein. The altar of incense alone stood within the ναός; but this may be only an accessory detail in the general description, and not to be pressed to a particular interpretation.
"Them that worship therein" directs our thoughts to the individual members of the one body which collectively is "the temple."

Also Vitr., Ewald,[2809] Züll., object not only to the expression, but also to what was said in Revelation 11:1, since they conceive of τ. αὐλ. τὴν ἔξωθεν τοῦ ναοῦ in the sense of Τ. ΑὐΛ. ΤῊΝ ἘΞΩΤΈΡΑΝ Τ. Ν., and distinguish[2810] an outer and an inner court, the latter of which, as belonging to the ΝΑΌς, is measured with it. But the expression ἜΞΩΘ. Τ. Ἔσωθεν in some places has crept in, for ἔξωθεν:[109] but this ΑὐΛῊ, since it is the only one, cannot possibly be within the temple, from which it is contradistinguished. Also in Ezekiel 8:16, it is חצר פנימית. But here mention is made only of the outer court (in contradistinction to the temple): which in the measuring ought not to be reckoned as a part of the temple, but as it is an outer court, so it ought to be regarded as outside the temple. (1) all mankind whatsoever; or
(2) that portion of mankind which is left when the true Church of God is withdrawn, and therefore which embraces the unrighteous part of mankind in contrast to the godly (cf. Revelation 2:26; Revelation 14:8; Revelation 16:19; Revelation 18:23; 22:22).
The latter is the signification here. And the holy city shall they tread underfoot. The holy city - Jerusalem - always in the Apocalypse the type of the Church. "They shall tread" need not necessarily refer to "the nations," though the context naturally leads to this signification; but it may be impersonal, amounting to no more than "the holy city shall be trodden underfoot."

It is good to look up the Greek on every word, but what is more important is this: what was in the mind of the Author, the Holy Spirit, as He caused John to write?

What event is about to take place that will cause the city to be trodden by Gentiles for the next 42 months? Next, what time is it in John's narrative? How close is it to the midpoint of the week?

We know from Paul that the man of sin is going to enter the most holy place in a temple and declare to the world that he is God. Does it make sense that to accomplish this, he must first arrive in Jerusalem?

This is what is happening behind the scenes here: John was in heaven so did not see the man of sin arrive; but this is why the city will be trampled: the man of sin will arrive in Jerusalem, probably just 3 1/2 days before he will enter the temple. He will arrive with his gentile (probably Islamic) armies - who will then trample the city from that day on.

The two witnesses are sent at that time, because the Man of sin just arrived. We can tell that they show up in Jerusalem just 3 1/2 days before the man of sin will enter the temple. Therefore only 3 1/2 days of these testimony will be in the first half of the week - the rest in the second half.

So the man of sin arrives in Jerusalem, and probably seconds later, the Two Witnesses arrive. Three days later, the man of sin will enter the temple and declare he is God, causing the daily sacrifices to cease - exactly as Daniel predicted. The 7th trumpet will sound in heaven notifying heaven that the midpoint of the week has arrived and the days of GT will soon follow.

As further proof of this, in 12:6 we see those in Judea begin to flee because they have just seen the abomination Jesus spoke of.

Is it possible to have daily sacrifices without a temple? Certainly; but John was told to measure a real "brick and mortar" temple. A temple with people inside worshiping.

The 7th trumpet will sound in heaven notifying heaven that the midpoint of the week has arrived and the days of GT will soon follow.

The "time of the judgment of the dead", and "wrath", and "reward", and destruction in Revelation 11:18 reveal the Book of Revelation is not in chronological order.
The 7th trumpet is the end, instead of the middle, of the tribulation period.
