If the corpse of Charles Manson were brought back to life as a flesh eating zombie, and ran for president under the platform of “Repeal Roe”, “Eat Illegal Aliens” and “Free AK47s for Grade Schoolers”, conservative Christians would gleefully vote for him.

Far, far from the truth.
But, we expect that now.
It's all they got.
Trump looking better (daily)in 2020.

I'm inclined to think it was not Hillary's lies. Although they mattered, there was also the issue of the criminality itself and, maybe even more than that, the fact that she was either sick (and trying to hide it) or just a lazy campaigner.

Trump was a whirlwind of activity in the late stages of the campaign. Hillary, by contrast, was off the campaign trail for long periods of time. This certainly made a difference in the states we always talk about as having won the election for Trump.

That's right. With Donald J Trump we know to expect for everything that comes out of his mouth to be far from the truth. It's all that he's got. He is looking better (daily) in 2020. I think an orange jumpsuit will suit his skin tone nicely. He can join his personal attorney who went to prison for doing his dirty work & all his other former employees.

Hey at least he won't wind up like his other failed employees who wear lime green blouses to dance to a song that means "pants on fire" on TV.

Trump's been the best at making every other president in US history except maybe Jackson look infinitely smarter, more moral, and overall better as a leader and human being.

Indeed. I'm almost at the point of viewing Nixon with a degree of affection and nostalgia.

I’ve seen countless incidents of conservative Christians absolving Republicans of heinous moral transgressions while condemning Democrats for doing the same thing.

I’ve come to the conclusion that as a group, conservative Christians care far more for their selfish interests than their religion.

I am not old enough to have any first hand experience with President Nixon but in the light of those who came after him and faced impeachment I think that history will look on him most kindly, at least in this one respect. When faced with the prospect of this kind of mess rather than fight a war to knife to hold on to power, the nation be damned, he stepped down. I am perhaps being too generous but that's my take.

Also every historian with a thing for mediocre presidents has to be jumping for joy on a daily basis as their guys faults are eclipsed.

We have not seen that.

Sad commentary about fundamentalists.

It's a sad reflection on all Christians in America tbh. I'm an American citizen living in Canada. My parents moved us here when I was little. I do live in a more liberal city but the church I'm active in now is actually way more conservative. They favour the Conservative running in our election this month. But they're definitely not pro-Trump & are appalled by him. I teach cello and piano to more advanced students at a music centre during the school yr but over the summer offered to teach anybody who wanted to learn at my church, they just paid me whatever they felt like. So when the minister announced that he made this lighthearted joke for whatever reason about me being an American. I hadn't ever really let that be known bc I mean no reason to bring it up really. It's not the same church my family goes to only bc I go to the one my boyfriend does now. So then after that I actually had some parents ask me about Trump bc they wanted reassurance!!! They take being a Christian seriously & didn't want someone who is a Trump supporter influencing their kids. I'm serious they were seriously worried. I don't blame them one bit. This forum helped me to understand why the reputation is what it is. I get freaked out by the Christians who basically argue completely against everything Christ himself stands for bc of their fervent loyalty to Trump. I had been confused but now I understand that Christianity isn't just a religion it's a tribe. Once it was known I'm not in the tribe of fundamentalists who defend what's indefensible from Trump, the parents at my church sighed in relief. I was booked all summer and somehow despite giving the classes for free made more money than I do with my job!!! That was a sweet blessing.
