She only got 10 years. What a disgrace. The American (in)justice system is like bleach: great for whites, bad for colors.
Eh, the major color at play here is blue. Had this woman done the very same thing and not had a badge with her name on it I doubt such leniency would have been shown.

Also, Link.

she thought she was!
If you're driving on the wrong side of the highway and you hit someone, you're still getting charged regardless of if you "thought" you were on the right side.

10 years seems like such a pittance for taking a life. A woman lies about her address so her kids can go to a better school? 5 years. Police officer murders a man in his own home? 10 years.

But like the poster lamenting that she thought she was in her home, so it is okay, there is a certain segment of the US population that is treated like Brock Turner and it would be horrible for them to be punished for a crime. But should we be surprised? How many years did the officer that murdered Oscar Grant get? How many years did the officer that murdered Laquan MacDonald get? They say justice for all, but really it’s only justice for some.

I had a friend who killed someone over the guy talking about his mama ( teenagers are stupid sometimes) he served 8 years . Crime done under the influence of strong emotion. I felt the sentence was sorta fair as she didn’t plan to murder the man and the only reason she got murder was probably for the poorly attempted cover up.

The poor cover up is why I think she should serve more time.

This is a show of incredible character and forgiveness. I could only hope to have it to this level. My utmost respect to this young man.

she thought she was!

So once she makes a mistake she is not responsible for her other actions?

I worked a 17 hour day when I was barely out of my teens and I would not have made such a mistake then. I worked a 78 hour shift with an 8 hour break in the middle in my first job out of college and would not have made such a mistake.

Really? You have never gone to the wrong door? The wrong floor? Remember we live in the age of the mobile phone where everyone is paying attention to the screen not to what is around them.

I have lived in flats and getting floors confused is easier than you'd think.

And yes the jury rightly found her guilty of murder.

How many years did that illegal Mexican get for killing that woman on a pier?

Oh that's right, none....he got acquitted of every charge.

For the record, I think this lady got off light. Let's not pretend that it's about her skin color, occupation, or sex. They let Cyntoia the murderous thief Brown go after all.

"Ms. Guyger had worked 40 hours over the previous four days, including a 13.5-hour shift on the day of the shooting."

^ this should have been emphasized
the fact that the apts were exactly over each other, shows she went the correct no. of steps (just on wrong floor)

working 13.5 hrs shift- if anything her job is just as responsible
people are not meant to work that long & because of being tired, she entered wrong apt

a man was in what she thought was HER apt
any man in one's apt would make a woman fear for her life

it is tragic what happened but believe it was an accident

why would she PLAN to go kill someone after working a 13.5 hr day ??

Of course it wasn't planned murder. And I don't blame her one bit for simply being so tired after such a long shift and obviously being overworked that she confuses floors.

.... The problem is the fact that she so quickly resorted to lethal force. (I don't remember the details of this story; was he himself armed with anything or even so much as made a clearly threatening move at her?) Even when you genuinely think it is your home and a stranger is in it, it is ridiculous to resort to using a gun first thing (although I suppose a culture of fear that everyone and everything in the world is out to get you and it's always kill or be killed will influence such a reaction as she had). This goes beyond a simple mistake. It not only cost someone his life, but an innocent one's at that.

Not when returning to my own home or residence.

And I don't do the walk (or worse drive) and talk bit. I'm not going to end up killing someone because I'm on the phone. Sadly I may well die because some fool on a phone driving their car runs me over.

I can see getting off on the wrong floor if taking an elevator, but that is far different than continuing by not noticing anything after that. My current home is in an area where they all have the same floor plan. But the yards, doors and cars in the driveways (which are also different) make it difficult to actually try to enter the wrong home, even though it is fairly easy to at least slow at the wrong house, especially at night.

Just as it could be easy to go to the wrong door in an apartment building but never try that door because of the red welcome mat.

Lots of people work a 4 by 10 week. So 40 hours over the last 4 days hardly seems like much. A 13.5 hour day doesn't seem like much to anyone who has ever worked IT or pretty much any job with a deadline. It surely did not seem like much compared to Law School so no mercy on that count from teh prosecutor.

exactly!

hasn't anyone here worked 14 hrs besides me?
you're exhausted

Yes. I work 12-hour shifts - occasionally 4 or 5 in a row - and (thankfully only) 3 or 4 times over the last ten years that has extended to over 14.

She is excused for the making a mistake in whose home she walked into. But pulling out a gun and shooting someone as a result - even if out of fearful and muddied thinking and not truly malicious intent - is and should be punishable by at least a few years prison time.

"And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image" (Genesis 9:5-6).

The death penalty (in case of murder) is not only biblical, but commanded. There is no negotiation in this passage, and God justifies and gives the reason for it on the basis of our creation. It deserves the highest form of punishment.

Christ did away with the Law on the cross. Pick and choose but you can't have both.

Not really. some man killed 3 teenagers going through a red light, while taking his wife to the hospital. He wasn't even charged. I'm sure this happens all the time.

Well, yes really because I used an exact example of something that happened near me several years ago.
