I took Daisy, a mostly white domestic shorthair cat, to the vet for a dental cleaning on October 2. Because anesthesia is required to do this for cats, she had a chemistry blood test done. It is horrible: she now has Stage 3 chronic renal failure. Her prognosis is "somewhat guarded" because CRF is not reversible.

Daisy is only three years old. The vet sounded like her life is half over. I have lost three cats to CRF, but they were all seniors with age-related renal failure, not young adults. Pray for Daisy's kidneys to function normally so she will live with me much longer than the vet expects.

Change her food for a couple of weeks and get a retest from a different doctor.
Don't tell him the prior diagnosis.
I am praying for you and kitty.

Results of more tests are pending. I do have new food to change her to, but don't want to do that if I can help it. Another vet would just tell me the same thing. Only God can give me a different answer.

I pray for healing for Daisy, and for the right natural choices for food. Processed food may be the problem and it causes tooth problems.

The number one cause of death in cats, by far, is renal failure. Some things I have researched that help: Wet, grain free cat food. (You can even spray it with water since cats don't drink much water.) Some fish, like tuna.
Iron supplements.

I pray for your guidance on the cat and for her to not suffer.

I know a lot about CRF in old cats and its relationship with a cat's diet. Daisy is not struggling to drink enough water for sure, and she gets wet food every day. So all the vet can think of now is a congenital condition because she has a relatively good diet and drinks from my bathroom faucet.

Daisy has an ultrasound tomorrow morning. I was instructed to fast her (no food) starting at 10:00 pm. I am tempted to let her eat anyway because she starting hanging around waiting for food and normally the procedure does not require anesthesia. It is so hard to watch a hungry cat tonight.

Pray for conclusive results so I can get a definite answer. Even if there is nothing the vet can do about it I need to know why she has this problem 10 years earlier than most cats start to lose their kidney function. She should have 15 years left!

Thank you for replying. I am feeling depressed about this now because after the test, the vet said Daisy's prognosis is only two years. He could not put a name on it like kidney displaysia, etc. so she doesn't have a malformation of any kind. I guess her mom ingested toxins or had an infection during pregnancy.

Her life expectancy is depressing. I have been seeing interesting topics on the CF homepage and thinking I can't partcipate just because my mind is on Daisy's kidneys. Just knowing she may not make it to age 6 is making me cry right now. (Many cats live 5-6 times longer than Daisy is.) But I really do want to keep posting here and join more threads.

I pray for Daisy for healing, just a thought, maybe give her finely chopped chicken, steamed fish, natural food rather than processed food. Her body may then heal itself.
May the Lord bless you and Daisy

I’m praying for you and Daisy. For what it’s worth, my cat was diagnosed with a different disease (HCM), and is still going strong despite the vet saying otherwise. So, you never know. Hang in there and be thankful for everyday you have with your precious kitty.

Treatment begins with food that is low in phosphorus and protein. She is only allowed to eat Hill's k/d for the rest of her life. I hate the stuff, but luckily she loves it.

I do pray for Daisy and you of course.
I would do some research online for a raw food diet for Daisy because the instances of so many health problems with our pets can often be diet related especially processed foods.
Regardless of what the vet says don't give up by taking the prognosis of two years, we all pray for you and Daisy and God cares for all His animals so dearly.
God bless you both.
