I know it's odd for an atheist to post and current event article in the world of religion, but this one seemed like something people from both sides of the fence might be interested in discussing...

Benny Hinn renounces prosperity gospel, says ‘Holy Ghost is just fed up with it’

Benny Hinn Renounces His Selling of God’s Blessings. Critics Want More.

Speaking to his followers during a Facebook Live broadcast on Monday night (which was first highlighted by Larry Reid Live), Hinn, who has long been a lightning rod for criticism for his support of the theology, declared the Gospel “is not for sale.”

“I’m sorry to say that prosperity has gone a little crazy and I’m correcting my own theology and you need to all know it. Because when I read the Bible now, I don’t see the Bible in the same eyes I saw 20 years ago,” Hinn said as his followers rejoiced.

“I think it’s an offense to the Lord, it’s an offense to say give $1,000. I think it’s an offense to the Holy Spirit to place a price on the Gospel. I’m done with it. I will never again ask you to give $1,000 or whatever amount, because I think the Holy Ghost is just fed up with it.

I do find the timing odd...

He's 66 years old now, and he's got an estimated net worth of $40 million.

Possible he's thinking about retirement?, and is making this statement to save face at the end so he'll be remembered as a "good guy"? I think it's safe to say, "giving the money back" isn't included as part of this personal transformation process...just a hunch.

Anyone can say anything they want but God knows the heart, knows truth and lies, be that Hinn or atheist or follow up poster ( me). He knows the intent. I don't know Hinn's intent, your intent and it's questionable if I even know my own though I would like to think I do. But God literally knows and God knew in time past and time forward.

Somehow I doubt Benny Hinn would know if the Holy Ghost was fed up with something. Doesn't really sound like a message from the Holy Spirit.

Hinn is a walking advertisement for the gullibility and desperation of many Christians.

You aren't a Christian just because you say you are, and even the Word of God Himself tells us that a lot of people will appeal to the *wonders* they did in His alleged name, but He will say He never knew them. Your faith, and faith in action (fruits) show your real alliance. The only real Son of God is Christ; all of us are just trying to follow His example. Those of us who teach people the wrong thing - especially if we know it is wrong - will be judged much harsher than the unbeliever according to the Word of God Himself.

Hinn only has to vindicate himself to the Most High God. But, his fruits so far have been rotten.

We aren't supposed to be completely blind to judgment, either. We are called to properly judge people; we are called to be wise as serpents and gentle as doves. That means we shouldn't have to wait for an "official" permission to draw a valid conclusion - especially from the "gut". We handicap ourselves by subscribing to social paradigms instead of spiritual ones; logic and reason, namely.

If he has been doing things which are wrong, the wrong spirit of that can act in other ways, too. What else has there been, then?

Possibly, he is not qualified to pastor, according to 1 Timothy 3:1-10. He possibly needs to be proven, first, before going any further.

But I do not know him personally. I do not know how he is, inside himself. But what he is thinking, now, is possibly the prayer which God is hearing and will answer. And we all will reap what we have been sowing, by way of how we have been committing ourselves.

So, yes, I will answer to God.

So, yes @ThatRobGuy > what you really are thinking with commitment can be prayer which God is hearing and answering :)

...but wouldn't one conclude that if someone openly admitted to previous unethical behavior (involving taking money), it would only stand to reason that they make reparations for that in some way or another, right?

His statements are basically an acknowledgment that his $40 million net worth is the result of ill-gotten gains.

That'd be kind of like a bank robber saying "I realize that what I did was wrong, and I won't do it again...but I'm going to go ahead and keep the money I previously stole...I just won't steal anymore"

Maybe. Getting older has a way of causing many to think long and hard about life.

But though a lot of people understandably don't trust Hinn, we should pray for a complete turn around for the guy.

How cool would it be to see him renounce this whole WOF thing and re-enter the Eastern Orthodox Church?

I would be inclined to believe that he is remorsefull if he sells all his ill-gotten swag and donates it.

Christians are not to judge anyone. If he is sincere in His heart asking the Lord for forgiveness he will receive it. Only the Lord knows the heart.

And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold." - Luke 19:8

That's what a repentant heart looks like. Waiting to see if Hinn does anything comparable. He might not be able to afford fourfold.

This is one of the biggest lies in Christianity today.

James 4:12
There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

Will he not receive forgiveness from the Lord if asked for with a sincere heart? Yes.

And do we know his heart? No

1 Kings 8:39

Then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways (for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind)

It's between him and the Lord.

And no one knows if/when he is doing this.

He did reconcile with his wife, so that's good.

We are definitely supposed to judge people - by their fruits or actions primarily. We are called to do this.

We are not called to condemn someone to hell; we don't have that authority. But, our Father has told us to be wise as serpents and gentle as doves.
