The article said fundamentalist groups in the United States think that their nation is blessed by God, and in recent years have "demonized" their enemies. It then argued they had formed an alliance with conservative Catholic groups in an "ecumenism of hate."
Assuming this is an accurate summary of the Pope's opinion, I have to somewhat agree. A lot of fundies believe America is uniquely blessed by God even though a certain group of enemies have nearly taken complete control of our government and democratic institutions, we can't seem to ban abortion even though a clear majority of the country would happily accept that, same-sex unions were forced down everybody's throats by unelected and unaccountable judges, our children are regularly poisoned every day with LGBT identitarianism, etc etc etc.

Try though I might, I can't see how America is the recipient of God's largesse at the moment. The country continues to exist in spite of sin which the great majority of the country would ban tomorrow if they could. The country continues to exist in spite of the best efforts of the above-mentioned group of enemies. But I am unconvinced that our continued existence amounts to a special blessing.

The most I'm willing to admit right now is that God is being extraordinarily patient with us. Or He might simply be waiting for the fullness of our sin to emerge before drastic action is taken. But that's about it.

I would never say that Poland is perfect. But it looks to me like the Poles get it much better than the Americans do.

I'm not sure if my critique quite aligns with the Pope's though.

The Pope does not seem to be much of a scholar, he attributed a quote to St Francis that is of very dubious origins

I find it interesting that he mentions that he felt bitterness talking to a South African woman who introduced him to two young converts, he mentions that she spoke perfect Spanish, now I might be jumping to conclusions, but being South African and speaking “perfect spanish” would mean she either worked abroad for an extended period of time... or more likely, comes from an upperclass family and is thus highly educated, remember that the working class in the third world do not have the same opportunities for formal education as they do in more prosperous nations.
So is Pope Francis just showing resentment to wealthy people again?

I keep focusing on the this interaction with the South African woman who spoke perfect Spanish

This is supposed to be the most clear distinction be evangelism and proselytism

What did the woman do wrong? She had a “triumphalist” attitude?

Also these articles use the term “fundamentalist Catholics”
Sloppy term
Literally that means someone who believes in the fundamentals of Catholicism
