Exactly. And now they want a whole new round of publicity to go out, to further reinforce it. You may as well run ads for the white supremacists.
Pretending that white supremacists don’t exist doesn’t make them disappear. This logic has never worked.

Talking about them the last few years hasn't either. It seems to have promoted them.

Challenging their ideas in person is the best chance to change them.

Well realistically....nothing makes them disappear. If we're discussing strategies to reduce their influence though...giving them as little attention as possible seems to work best.

More often than not, the best way to fight hatred is with an outstretched hand rather than a closed fist.

Talk with people. Reason with them. Show them a better way.

One tip-off is the symbol being used in strange ways that one wouldn't expect to see 'OK'.

Tiffiney Zinger said it was painful telling her daughter she couldn't use a family vacation photo for her second grade class project – the image was marred by what appeared to be a symbol of hate.

The photo shows the 6-year-old girl, who is biracial and has autism, posing with an actor dressed as the movie character Gru from "Despicable Me" during a Universal Orlando breakfast event attended by the Zinger family in March. The character formed an upside-down "OK" symbol with his fingers, recognized by some as a hate symbol, on the girl's shoulder, according to a photo and video reviewed by USA TODAY.

A Universal Orlando Resort spokesman said Tuesday in response to USA TODAY inquiries about the episode that the actor had been fired.

...

Beirich says [white supremacist trolls] like to "photobomb" images with hate symbols and then share them online as an inside joke or prank.

"It’s a game for them to slip their hate symbols in contexts that don't belong," she said.

I love 4chan for fooling people into thinking this is a hate symbol.

Funny thing is, it might become one due to 4chan followers who don't get the joke.

Consider: holding a handgun "gangsta style"...
Thug_sideways_pistol_aim.jpg

is actually a stupid way to fire it -- the sights are on the top for a reason, genius...but... the trope became popular in movies because directors love the "gun pointing straight at the camera" shot, and the sideways gun emphasizes the shooter's fist, and doesn't block the actor's face.

Real gangstas (who generally speaking aren't the sharpest tools in the shed), see the gangsta movies and imitate it because, stupid or not, it looks cool.

And that, boys and girls, is how fiction becomes fact.

And by shooting “gangster” style, they miss more than they hit. Would you rather have more accurate fire coming from gangsters?

I wouldn't; why don't they seem to want that?

Because it looks dope in front of the hommies.

Right -- and if they'd rather look good than shoot straight, well... I already said they weren't exactly rocket scientists...

Reminds me of a (NSFW) comic strip I saw someone do; it involved a trio of hired thugs who were, in their own words, so awsomely incredible that they couldn't even hold their guns straight.

While it may have some show elements as well, if you don't have a lot of experience with firearms then point aiming while pulling the trigger with the middle finger may be more intuitive than lining up sights, which requires some skill to keep the handgun level. Point aiming uses the natural motion of pointing at an object, which usually means raising your finger to the level of the item being pointed at.

For those with training the modern sight method generally wins out, and the muscle memory can even translate to point shooting as well. However, as an article I read noted the trend in gang killings in recent years involve increased lethality due to the use of multiple high caliber rounds, usually after luring a target in close. They tend to walk down the victim, firing multiple rounds until standing over them, to ensure the person does not survive. In such scenarios the grip is probably a minor consideration.

Statistics from Baltimore:

The number of fatal head shots in the city rose steadily from about 13 percent two decades ago to 62 percent last year. Meanwhile, the number of cadavers with 10 or more bullets more than doubled in the past decade, according to the Maryland medical examiner’s office, which tallied the bullet wounds at the request of The Sun.

Guns have also become more deadly, as the weapon of choice for criminals and then law enforcement shifted from the revolver to the semiautomatic pistol, which can fire more bullets without reloading. Nationally, the number of 9 mm and .40-caliber guns taken off the streets surged during the past four years, as seizures of less powerful .22-caliber guns remained relatively flat. In Maryland, seizures of 9 mm handguns overtook .22-caliber guns for the first time last year.

https://www.thetrace.org/2017/03/high-capacity-magazine-ban-baltimore-police/

The Trace found that between 2010 and 2016, nearly 82 percent — 2,100 — of the high-capacity magazines confiscated by Baltimore police were loaded in pistols. The majority of the handguns accepted 9mm or .40-caliber ammunition.
