My priest told us after Mass today that he's going to be at some kind of meeting or conference or seminar or something down where the diocesan offices are tomorrow, and it's connected somehow to a book that I think has that title Going Going Gone. I don't know if the authors are speaking at this thing or what, but I'm curious if anyone is familiar with the book or whatever it is?

It all revolves around people leaving the Church, if I understood him correctly. I'm inherently skeptical of whatever kind of advice people might propose for to address this issue, especially when they're referring to under-35s and they are not, themselves, a part of that group.

I'm skeptical when the advice can be summed up as "Don't be Catholic".

...Is that what those people propose?
Not them so much. I was speaking more generally than that. Seems like a lot of know-it-alls seem to think the answer to the Church's problems is to be something other than Catholic.

Here is some info on the book.
Going, Going, Gone | Saint Mary's Press

National Catholic Reporter/Distorter so take it for what it's worth.
Study asks: Why are young Catholics going, going, gone?
The Distorter article was mush. But what I got from it was two things. Probable parental bad examples and not enough exposure to real Catholicism.

Of course the Distorter article advocates 'engage and adapt to the cultural currents of the present age.' As if that hasn't been tried ad nauseam.

Ahh I see what you mean, and you're right.

We need to try Catholic again. Catholic dogma and doctrine, Catholic liturgies, Catholic prayers, Catholic social teaching, processions, novenas, confession, the whole nine yards without watering it down.

This is what gets me. If we hold the fullness of faith why are we reaching over the fence when we have the fullness of faith??

I skimmed the NCR article after chevy said it wasn't great, so this is just a guess. I will speak in the first-person plural since the millenial problem affects me, too.

The title reminds me of someone leaving an organization or else an auction item being sold. Either way I think a core aspect of our problem is consumerism and Jesus' parable of the rich young man. In our culture everything is ...priced. The NCR article is a great example of this. Consider especially the sentence from John Vitek, "We weren't interested in the quantification of the question but the qualification of the question." This is just another form of pricing or weighing... another form of analysis.

The kingdom of heaven is like the man who sells everything he has to buy the land with the pearl of great price. He stops weighing and he goes for it. Our generation is always weighing the pros and cons, and second-guessing ourselves. We are like the lawyer who prompts Jesus to tell the parable of the Good Samaritan. We thus have a tendency to stay in the Church for awhile, but then some other shiny thing catches our attention, we begin bidding on it, and "Going... going... gone!"

I'm all for it!

It's the very definition of insanity to look at what protestants are doing and think, "yeah we need more of that!"

If anyone wonders just how it would work out, look at the Episcopalians. That is where the 'leading lights' seem to want to take us, with optional orthodoxy and optional everything else. Train wreck as far as the Episcopalians. Let's just skip going there.

We can steal their good ideas, if we're careful. But we should know and teach our own ideas too, and we have been doing very poorly at that.

One Catholic staple that is often overlooked is the calendar. The structure of the week, solemnities, feast days, fast days, liturgical seasons, daily scripture readings, the movement of the sun and the moon, etc. Catholics are good at marking time, in history, in the year, and in the day. The Angelus bell, liturgy of the hours, prayer before meals, the morning offering, and even matins for those who have trouble sleeping through the night.

I think reclaiming the Lord's Day would be the first step to bringing the creature of time back into God's ordering.

Great idea. Bringing time AND money under the dominion of our Lord.

And the Calendar. I should have remembered that and included it in my short list. It's a huge asset in making the year holy.
