"Are we too smart for our own good?"
That is a case by case basis.
It all depends on how the knowledge/wisdom is used and how heavily you rely upon it ir take credit for it.
IF God has blessed someone with a high intellect, it remains a blessing IF the glory for that intellect is given to God and NOT boasted about by the person that was given that knowledge and wisdom.
For how can you boast about that which was given?
Sure, maybe you studied, but did God not give you the means to study, sight, touch, health, ability to learn... and allow your heart to beat and lungs to draw breath dueing that study.
It also depends on how one pits that wisdom and knowledge to use. IF that wisdom is used to justify sin and excuse evil/wickedness of the flesh... then yes... that person is to smart for their own good because their pride has allowed them to turn what God gave in blessing by free will turned that blessing to a curse.
God opposes the proud, so IF that intellect increases the pride in a person, it becomes a problem. IF the intellect does not spoil the persons humility... then it is a blessing to that person and to those around them.
Money, power, intellect... etc. None of these are evil/wicked in themselves, but the place in the heart of a person and their intent make thems tools of light, or of darkness.
