It is just another facet of praying in the Spirit. You sing rather than speak. I think it is something you develop. Some just kind of make up a tune (seemingly). Others seem to have one to accompany it. It is not a strength of mine and it seems to be lacking in the church. Sometimes you'll go to a fellowship and for a time, they will be singing a beautiful collection of melodies. I look forward to it's development in a greater strength.

Your interest may be a leading. Why don't you step out with a melody some time when you pray in the Spirit?

For me, it usually happens when I am listening to worship music on my ipod, I will feel led to sing in tongues. So its usually the melody of the song, and I am pretty much just replacing the words to the song.

Although on occasion, I will sing when there is no melody, and the melody just sort of seems to come from my spirit.

It really surprised me the first time I started singing in tongues. I didn't know it was mentioned in the Bible, but the Lord later showed me that it was. The first number of time I sang in tongues was while driving in the car, yet later I came into a church in which it kind of happened there as a group. I love the way it comes across in a group. It kind of seems like angels are in the room.

Anyway, it is also possible to get a translation. Most people miss the fact that the bible says let the who speaks in tongues pray that he may interprete. You can ask for an interpretation while you are singing also. The first time I did that, I found out that I was singing an old hymm, but just a lot slower so that I didn't reconized that was what I was doing until I asked for the interpretation and my singing in tongues changed to english. Another time the word I got were so very interesting. It was a wonderful praise song. Still there are times when I have just heard the Lord tell me a general idea of what I was singing about. Interpretations are not always a word for word translation, but sometimes He just tells you the general thing being said in tongues.

As far as when appropriate, well it seems that it is appropriate whenever you are lead. Still, it might be wise to adjust the volume based upon the circumstance. You know that you can pray in tongue inside your head, just like you can pray inside your head. So just like you can tell the Lord thanks, without speaking it out loud, you can also pray in tongues, and even sing in tongues inside also.

To me, praying in tongues and especially singing in tongues, seem to be like a spring of fresh living water bubling up inside me.

This goes back a few decades now , but I can remember a girl in the University campus fellowship that I attended who would sing in tongues and the presence of God came not the room when she did.

Other than that , I am not familiar with it.

I cor 14:15 "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."

When is it appropriate? The same as speaking in tongues though we already know that everyone's interpretation of those Scriptures varies. When is it appropriate? It isn't necessary for us to feel it just as we don't have to feel it in order to read Scripture or pray.

Singing in tongues is beautiful imo.

Perhaps it isn't necessary to feel it, but that is how it comes to me. Unlike praying or reading Scriptures, the gift of tongues is a gift from the Spirit. Anyone can pray, whether they know God or not. Anyone can read the Scriptures, whether they know God or not. But Jesus talked about sending the Holy Spirit to us and so we have the Holy Spirit and for me, both the praying and singing with the gift of the Spirit seems to be activated by the Spirit.

Frankly, there are so many times when I am just going along as normal and suddenly that gift is activated in me, and I don't have a clue why.

Singing in tongues is Biblical. It can be used in worship unto the Lord God. It can also be used in intercessory prayer.

I first sang in tongues upon receiving the baptism with the Spirit.

1Corinthians14:15; Ephesians5:18-19; Colossians3:16

It is interesting and important to understand that praise can be used in intercessory prayer.

Indeed, both time the Lord has had me involved in casting out demons from a person while at church, He had me praising Him before the demon was cast out.

He reminded me that He lives in His praises. So creates a correct enviroment for His work to happen.

My first experience of speaking in tongues was actually singing in tongues. I had been seeking tongues for a while, but not getting it. It started as I was working to work one day. I think the rhythm of my footsteps helped.

I sing in tongues on my own most days.

As with my spoken tongues, I have what seem to be different languages. It seems when I move into one of the more expressive languages there is usually an interpretation available - whether the tongue is spoken or sung. I don't know if anyone else has this experience?

There are distinct differences in prayer language and a message in tongues for interpretation. When singing in tongues happens in a congregational setting, it's spontaneous just like a spoken message in tongues for interpretation. The congregation seems to be in complete unity in worship to our Lord.

Yes, it is biblical.

I Corinthians14:15 "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."

There are two types of manifestations of tongues. The one you are asking about is the first, and given to all who believe for our individual use and edification. This sign is used for prayer, and praise TO God. The signing is praise. The second is the gift of tongues for the profit of all in the congregation. It is receiving messages FROM God that must be interpreted, whereas the individual prayer and praise is not required to be interpreted, though beneficial and you can pray for the interpretation.

Mark 16:16-18 (individual)
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

1 Corinthians 12:7-10 (corporate use)
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
