Hi all,

I am new to Orthodoxy and am wondering about the location of a prayer corner. I currently have a space set up in my bedroom, but I find that I cannot use it to pray in the morning because it would disturb my wife. I have a shed in my backyard with space to set up a place to pray. Does the prayer corner need to be in my house, or is it okay to go out to the shed to pray?

I have a small office in the house that I could go to pray, but if I were to set up a prayer corner in this room it would be facing West rather than East.

Knee V

It's phonetic.

I think you are doing just fine with it in the shed. As for facing East vs West, we place our icon corner wherever it will fit, and that may or may not be an East-facing wall. What I am used to is praying facing an icon of Christ, or a Cross, or an icon of a saint regardless of which direction it's facing, and to pray facing East in the absence of any icons.

Don't get to caught up in the east west thing. Facing east is a tradition only because the Sun is considered an Icon of the resurrection. Other than that, any place you can pray is a good place.

Sorry I will search more specifically on what you are looking for:
This is what I could find in the Bible: Does this help?

Isa_41:25 "I have stirred up and put into action one from the north [the king of Persia, Cyrus the Great], and he has come; From the rising of the sun he will call on My Name [in prayer]. And he will trample on [the Babylonian] officials as on mortar, Even as a potter treads clay." [2Ch_36:23; Ezr_1:1-3]

Well, it's a little more than that.

Genesis 2:8
Ezekiel 43:2
Matthew 24:27

Our parish church was built facing North-South as Council restrictions did not allow it to be built East-West, so if you can make it work facing East, great, if not, it isn't a problem :).
Other than that, any place you can pray is a good place.

Our former spiritual Father had a small cell set up in the back of his garage.

Watch out for all those icons that will mysteriously begin to multiply once you get that shed set-up.

I was warned at one point. It did absolutely no good. They have a life of their own.

You know how I roll, baby. You know how I roll.......straight up hand-painted. drops microphone and walks away George Jefferson style

To the OP: just make sure you don't get the icons near the post hole digger, shovels, spades, brooms, and wheel barrow.

Don't tell Gurney, most of them are prints ;).
(and the hand painted icons were gifts)

Not to give you any ideas, but that is just one step short of putting an onion dome on the roof of your house.

Not saying that's a bad thing.

The room does have a skylight, so there is a transparent, dome sort of shape on the side of the roof. Does that count?
