• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

i suffer from ocd and a lot of coincidences happened. i was worrying for having pirated windows and I was having thoughts like "i hope i wont hear a door". one minute later i did. and it happened again now. as i was typing this message i was thinking "i hope i wont hear a door" and it happened. that made me get away from my pc yesterday. i sat today and had the same thought and 1 minute later it happened. 3 times. also some other coincidences happened for example in the morning i got a random thoughg like "i will hear the man who buys old stuff from others and yells in his car." and 2 minutes later it happened. i was reading an article about a disorder and read a word that triggered my ocd and i heard the door again. i thought like "was that a coincidence?" and i read in google the word "signs" in a sentence like "'the signs of the disorder bla bla bla" i do not know what to do. i asked my bro money to buy windows but he does not give me. there is a chance I maybe told God due to ocd that i will buy windows 8.1. could that be a valid promise?

We can't promise Him anything. So no, they're not valid. And OCD has no control over God's grace for you, no matter if you heard a thousand doors open and close. I hope you are being treated for your condition brother.
how a therapist can help me? how can he prove that they are coincidences?

You already know you have OCD, you have accepted that much, that you have a condition. Even if that condition causes you to worry about all kinds of coincidences and signs, you know it's a condition. The more you get into good treatment, the more you understand about your illness, and the more you can hopefully control/contain it. There's a reason why OCD can be a nuisance, especially if one remains alone with it, untreated. Treatment isn't about "proving" anything, but more about recognizing these thought patterns, and getting rid of the constant need for all kinds of proof and signs, and the need to pursue and think about them all the time.

I don't have OCD, but I hope you listen to people who do, and who have gotten a little better. Many have been treated or are in treatment, with some actual results. I'm sure this forum has plenty of those people.

What Tempura said. A therapist won't convince you that these aren't coincidences. The needing to be reassured is a compulsion; it's what your OCD wants. But no matter how many people try to convince you, it won't work, because OCD will never let you rest. A therapist will teach you how to be in control of your own mind again, instead of letting OCD control it. They will teach you how to recognize the untruths your mind is telling you, and how to be able to stand up to your OCD. Is it a lot of work? Yep. Is it worth it? Totally. Because the result is more freedom from the fear your OCD is putting on you.

A therapist can help you sort out rational and irrational thoughts.

You should also see a pastor in case there are spiritual causes. You do not need to keep making promises to God about what to buy or which store to go to. But commit to obeying His Word and read it everyday.

Thanks for reaching out to us.
