in support of you:
i read your exchanges with interest. It reminds me of what Paul said about the Corinthians, that some followed Apollos and others preferred Peter. But there were others who said that Christ was their authority! Doesn't that sound familiar? Paul said that their attitude caused him to view them as immature babes!

I am always careful when I see someone asserting Christ as "the" authority, because what they are really saying is that Christ is "their" authority, so that they don't have to be teachable. It is like: "No one understands Scripture except me and Jesus", as if they have a special line of communication with the Lord that we, as part of the common "herd" don't.

I didn't say I don't have trouble understanding them. They are extremely difficult to understand, but when you think you can take one verse and interpret it by itself, then you clearly do not have a clue.

I will say this though, at least I understand that God isn't going to doom most of humanity in fire for all eternity, and that by itself puts me miles ahead of most ministers.

Who gave you the numbers on that? WOW! How did they calculate those stats for all of humanity for all time? Amazing.

I know that happens but I have personally heard zero ministers that do that, let alone most.

You seem to like the truth. Examining ourselves is scriptural. I reccomend it... Seriously.

Are you Ready is the name of the sermon.

We could all learn and preach from the original Greek and Hebrew texts. However, that would cut out most Christians. The same thing is true to a lesser extent with the KJV. While it is a good translation of the Bible in King James English, the English language has changed so much since James was king that newer translations are necessary with the many much-earlier Greek manuscripts that are closer to the original writings of the Apostles and the Prophets that make up the inspired Scriptures. The NIV is faithful to those earlier manuscripts and therefore is to be preferred, especially for people for whom the KJV's language is a barrier.

No Bible is perfect. I have seen many versions, and in several languages. Not one Bible was 100% perfect. Does that matter?

People can buy Comparative Bibles, and look at the text rendered in several ways. What an excellent option.

Why not emphasize the blessings?

I would not underestimate Humanities value to God since our father gave His only begotten son that we may live.

Unlike the abstract god of the philosophers I believe in the god that the Hebrews speak of. This God has feelings and desires. What kind of abstract entity can call his beloved the reflection in his eyes?

The stone which the builders rejected Has become The Chief Cornerstone.

Well of course you think that the NIV is flawed, if your reference point is the KJV! The KJV is the poorest translation still in common use, with more than 3,000 translational errors. The NIV on the other hand is one of the 3 most accurate translations in common usage today. Incidentally, have you noticed that each of the 6,000+ Protestant denominations that use the KJV interprets it differently?

The KJV is NOT the standard by which other English translations of scripture are judged. The Greek and Hebrew are.

it's a good thing English is blessed with many reputable translations including the KJV and the NIV so we can use them together to better understand the meanings of the scriptures (rather than to tear them apart).

I also believe the first edition of the NIV was in 1978 (it uses "capstone")
