Well there's the gospel and then there's this stuff that people wrongheadedly do because of it.

So if this guy was gay throughout this, seems to me it was a "Do as i say and not as i do" program that could hardly be taken seriously. Or was it doomed to fail from the start because that was the plan? Something isn't right here.
It attempts to, but the reality, it could just as well be a bunch of Gays that didn't have the...well lets just say they didn't have the willpower or desire to quit. That happens with all types of addictions.

“There is no published scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of 'reparative conversion therapy' as a treatment to change one's sexual orientation” the American Psychiatric Association has officially stated. "Clinical experience suggests that any person who seeks conversion therapy may be doing so because of social bias that has resulted in internalized homophobia, and that gay men and lesbians who have accepted their sexual orientation are better adjusted than those who have not done so."
Perhaps the most famous case study in the failure of reparative therapy is that of two founders of Exodus International in 1976, Michael Bussee and Gary Cooper, who worked to "convert" gay people for three years, until they fell in love and left Exodus in 1979. In 1982, they held a marriage ceremony and lived together until Cooper died nine years later. "The desires never go away," Bussee said. "After dealing with hundreds of people, I have not met one who went from gay to straight. Even if you manage to alter someone's sexual behavior, you cannot change their true sexual orientation."
Since then the Exodus International ministry has issued an apology to all those they harmed and has shut its doors for good.

Actually as @Hammster mentioned, the Gospel brings liberty to sin.
If you have had an encounter with ministries which weigh people down with their sins appealing to a legalism, then I can emphasize with your quoted remarks. It exists out there for sure.
Jesus said His yoke was light and He is gentle. He came to free us not mire us in sin.
Also just for general purposes, the New Testament defines sin as transgression of the Law. And as others have mentioned we are all condemned before a Holy God.
He will judge our transgressions. Yet God came in the flesh to wipe our sins away and give us His Righteousness.
He loves us so much He even says:
"Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.
That’s a promise for all who believe in Him. They will have everlasting life.
We also see:
2 Corinthians 7: NASB
10For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leadingto salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
And:
Romans 10: NASB
