What is the one single reason God would want us to go to church? One main reason that is above all other reasons.

Heb 10:24,25
24) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25) Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Eph. 4:12-15
12) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13) Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14) That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

None of these things can be done by ONE, it takes the Body of Believers.

Therefore Fellowship is the reason.

The Prayer, Learning and Worship will take place in due course.

We do not go to Church. We are the church. Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to neglect our meeting together. Instead we encourage one another. I don't know that you can nail down one reason. Acts 2:42-46 tells us what the early church did. It also says that God added to the church daily.

We come together for corporate worship, which includes everything you listed, that we may be edified in our glorying of him. It is also an activity of the Christian sabbath rest which blesses our souls.

I am one of those people who has slept in this morning, still feeling tired, and do not feel like going to church.

But I am going to go. The reason is in Hebrews 10:25. We should not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, and we should also exhort one another. Today is also a celebration of the Eucharist and Jesus instructed us in Mark 14:22-25 to "do this in remembrance of me".

During the service, we will have the opportunity to listen to the Word of God, come together in corporate worship and prayer.

I only wish I could find Christians who meet together daily. This business of once a week and perhaps a home group, then we disappear into the world never to be seen again, limits the contact with other Christians to less than 2% of their time. In my case (because I live at sea and have family commitments that preclude most evening groups) my contact is limited even more severely to something like 0.7%.
That we must then stand or sit in pews looking at a stage for most of that time means that in fact the fellowship of the brethren is almost non-existent.

I don't think there IS but a single reason. All the ones you mentioned are helpful, beneficial, and have Scriptural backing.

So far from the consensus I would gather the reason is for fellowship (growing the church, edifying, etc).
Praying, learning, and worship can be done without a church. But fellowship.. not necessarily.
I haven't double-checked what others have written here, but I disagree with this conclusion.

Yes, you can pray alone, but fellowship is not possible if one takes that route. BUT in addition to the uniqueness of corporate worship, there are the sacraments. You cannot receive Holy Communion (as Christ told us to do) by yourself. Nor are most of us trained theologians, so that's a reason for having sermons. And the many outreach programs that a good church engages in (again in response to Christ's admonitions) are not one-man projects.

There may be many reasons for not attending weekly church services. Most are excuses that are perpetuated by ignorance. The only way to grow in faith is through word and sacrament. It is hard to believe that an individual’s faith can grow without weekly nourishment of The Word.

So you write off everybody that in order to support their family or other necessary reason do not fall into your cushy little 6 days on 1 day off lifestyle and is not able to be present in a religious gathering every week. Prisoners, the sick, the disabled, the isolated, those who work shift work or at sea. None of these will ever have any sort of faith.
On the other if what you say is the case what is the Church doing to ensure that theses people are actually able to meet and be fed at a rate that would enable their faith to grow?

There are many valid reasons to meet together in church with other Christians and it is as absurd to single out one of them as being the most significant, as it would be to single out a sin as being the worst sin.

The only reason I see that is invalid for attending church is to use attendance as a weekly get-out-of-hell card, as the Catholic Church promotes in its declaration that intentionally missing weekly mass is a mortal sin which will automatically condemn one to hell unless it is confessed properly.
