Having been a Christian for about ten years I'm now bored with the whole thing. What advice can people offer?

I was brought up as a Buddhist but became increasing disillusioned, became interested in whether God existed. I began praying, reading the Bible and attending church.

Now though I am over the whole thing. When I became a Christian I had no friends and my life was fairly pointless. Now though I have a network of friends, I have a social life and a permanent job that I enjoy. I am much more self confident, and am doing things I was previously afraid to do.

In the midst of this Christianity is simply less relevant, I have other things far more fun and interesting to do.

Of course you will be wondering why I don't simply leave. Unfortunately i live with relatives who are Christian so leaving the church would create difficulties, so I am stuck, paying lip service to something that no longer moves me. Of course I did this for years when I was a Buddhist, but I was younger then, and I hate the thought of wasting more of my life living a lie.

What do you advise?

Many Churches don't really communicate the Truth and one feet in cold water and the other in hot water. It's only confusing.

Bible studies are selective and biased and belittles teachings that doesn't agree with their dogmas.

It's not surprising to get bored.

Do you really want to know the Truth?? Then good luck finding that church!

If you care enough for the Truth, I'm afraid you'll have to find it out yourself.

I advise making Christianity not a religion but a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It's all about Him, not about a set of rules and behaviors, or a certain lifestyle. All of those things *follow* the relationship. For me, the more time I spend getting to know Him, the less boring it all is.

Funny, though, as I get to know Him, I find that even the "boring" parts of Christianity have a purpose. For example, my husband and I are currently studying 1st Chronicles. Those opening chapters.... talk about a dry read! You think Matthew 1 is full of "begats," try sifting through all of this! Names, numbers, names, numbers. It's like reading a telephone directory. But I've come to believe that even these snoozers are there for a reason. In fiction, there is something called the "law of conservation of detail." You don't see J. K. Rowling droning on about every individual who appears in Harry Potter's lineage going back thousands of years, what all of their names were, where they were born, where they moved to, who they married, how many children they had, and how old they were when they died. That's because it is a made-up story, and readers don't necessarily want to know all of that. The fact that the Bible bothers to include statistics makes me inclined to believe it is not a made-up story.

Please pray that God will send the Holy Spirit to set you on fire (figuratively!) for Him.

I agree with all Lovebirds flying said.
It is all about a personal relationship with Jesus, by which He sends the Holy Spirit to dwell in you who comforts, teaches you and bares witness of Gods truth.
Do you have that or is it just a form of religion to you?
Pray that God will increase your faith and turn into Him.

You mention dont want to live a lie... Are you referring to present situation or the past (Buddhism)?

My advise: repent & believe the one true gospel of the kingdom & be born again, a second time by the Spirit of God & follow the living God, the Lord Jesus Christ--before it is too late. The disciples FOLLOWING Jesus were never bored, each day was a new adventure of faith & furthering God's kingdom.

They came to truly love the Lord of life & nothing in this life compared to knowing Christ Jesus their Lord & Master.

John 6:43-71 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus replied. 44“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him & I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father & learned from Him comes to Me— not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father.

47Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it & not die.

51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.” At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”

53So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh & drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh & drinks My blood has eternal life & I will raise him up at the last day. For My flesh is real food & My blood is real drink.

56Whoever eats My flesh & drinks My blood REMAINS IN ME & I in him. Just as the living Father sent Me & I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna & died, the one who eats this bread will live forever.”
(Matthew 8:18-22; Luke 9:57-62; Luke 14:25-33)

59Jesus said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. On hearing it, many of His disciples said, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?” Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching, Jesus asked them, “Does this offend you? Then what will happen if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?

63The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits NOTHING. The words I have spoken to you are spirit & they are life. However, there are SOME of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe & who would betray Him.)

65Then Jesus said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has granted it to him.” From that time on, many of His disciples TURNED BACK & no longer WALKED WITH HIM. So Jesus asked the Twelve, “Do you want to leave too?”

68Simon Peter replied, “Lord, TO WHOM WOULD WE GO? You have the words of eternal life. We believe & know that You are the Holy One of God.”

70Jesus answered them, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” He was speaking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For although Judas was one of the Twelve, he was later to betray Jesus.

I John 2:18,19,24,26-29 Children, it is the last hour & just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have REMAINED with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us. As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning REMAIN in you. If it does, you will also REMAIN in the Son & in the Father.

I have written these things to you about those who are trying to DECEIVE you. 27And as for you, the anointing you received from Him REMAINS in you & you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true & genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so REMAIN IN HIM as you have been taught.

28And now, little children, REMAIN IN HIM, so that when He appears, we may be confident & unashamed before Him at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

John 8:30-32 As Jesus spoke these things, many believed in Him. So He said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you REMAIN in My word, you are truly My disciples. And then you will know the truth & then the truth will set you FREE.”

2 John 1:1,7-9 To the chosen lady & her children, whom I love in the truth—& not I alone, but also all who know the truth— because of the truth that REMAINS IN US & will be with us forever...

For many deceivers have gone out into the world, refusing to confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, so that you do not LOSE what we have worked for, that you may be fully rewarded. Anyone who runs ahead without REMAINING in the teaching of Christ does not have God. Whoever REMAINS IN HIS TEACHING has both the Father & the Son.

It isn't a personal relationship when you only expect God where you want Him and only believe things you want to believe in this relationship like they want to manipulate God.

By your doing these things do not make you a Born Again Believer (Christian)

It sounds like you only knew about Him but you never personally met Him.

Start from the beginning.

Our natural state, our flesh - with our emotions and our ability to reason - is enmity towards God and disinterest in His Word, so your feeling is unsurprising.

However, I think if you hear God's Word rightly taught, there's absolutely nothing dull about it. It's profoundly rich and deep, with real hope and application. Christ claims to be the way, the truth and the life. If you believe this and understand what it means in its full and proper sense, I can promise you that you won't be bored!

I don't know what kind of church you go to, but perhaps it could be a good idea to find a different church which is a little more Biblically studious, for lack of a better word.

Blessings and prayers +

I would suggest that you check your experience to see if you were really born again in the first place. Reading the Bible and going to church does not make you a Christian. God makes Christians. It is called being born again. If all you are is a kind of "hobby" Christian, then you remain dead in your sins and yes, you will be bored. You need to repent, which means to turn away from your former way of life. You need to acknowledge that you are a sinner. God only saves sinners. You need to accept the death and resurrection of Christ as the full payment of all your sins. You need to accept Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Real Christians have seen that they are sinners and have no hope of being accepted by God in their sinful state. Then we gratefully accept God's free gift. Then God can accept us. Until then, you have nothing but an outward veneer, which does not satisfy you and certainly does not fool God.

Now though I have a network of friends, I have a social life and a permanent job that I enjoy. I am much more self confident, and am doing things I was previously afraid to do.
Every one of those things can be taken away in an instant. A car crash, a criminal act, a broken heart, disease, job loss, etc. There is only one thing permanent, our relationship with God; and that comes through the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Don't make Christianity into an external religion. It never was intended to be so, and as such you are missing the best adventure life has to offer, the one that comes from the Giver of life, Himself. Without Him, everything else devolves into empty idol worship. But with Him comes "joy unspeakable and full of glory", and "all things pertaining to life and godliness".

Frankly it sounds as if you are looking for things or people to fill voids in your life. Not uncommon we are all humans and yearn for companionship. It seems like you used church at one point to fill that void, and now have friends and don't need the church. Some have already mentioned it, that being a Christian is not following rules and regulations, reading and attending church. Sure those things are things we do once we have been called by God, convicted of our sin, repent and confess with our mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in our hearts He is Risen from the dead. I don't think one can 'obtain' this regeneration, repentance and faith without the unmerited Grace of God moving us.

You and everyone should have a fear of God. He will judge our transgressions. Yet God came in the flesh to wipe our sins away and give us His Righteousness.

He loves us so much He even says:

"Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.

That’s a promise for all who believe in Him. They will have everlasting life.

We also see:

2 Corinthians 7: NASB

10For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

And:

Romans 10: NASB

6But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), 7or ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”8But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11For the Scripture says, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.” 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lordis Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.”

King David when he committed adultery and gave orders for the murder of the husband of Bathsheba was convicted, confronted by God through the prophet Nathan. Here is David’s prayer of repentance.

Psalm 51: NASB

A Contrite Sinner’s Prayer for Pardon.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

1Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness;
According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.
2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity
And cleanse me from my sin.

3For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.

4Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is evil in Your sight,
So that You are justified when You speak
And blameless when You judge.

5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.

6Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.

7Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8Make me to hear joy and gladness,
Let the bones which You have broken rejoice.

9Hide Your face from my sins
And blot out all my iniquities.

10Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

12Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit.

13Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners will be converted to You.

14Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation;
Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.

15O Lord, open my lips,
That my mouth may declare Your praise.

16For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it;
You are not pleased with burnt offering.

17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

Advice? Pray to our Heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father you have convicted me of my self centered sinful nature. My sins are great and before you. I am a damned and destitute sinner in need of Your Grace. I need Jesus as my champion. You sent Your Son Jesus Christ in Whom you are well pleased to die for my sins, give me His Righteousness and rise from the dead three days later to grant me eternal life with you. It is nothing I could ever do. How can I? You loved me so much that while I was still in my sin a child of wrath and dead in my trespasses, You made me alive together with Jesus Christ. It is by Your unmerited Grace I am saved through faith in the saving Work of Jesus Christ. You will clean me of all iniquity and sin, wiped away. It is nothing I can do or boast of. You will make me a new creation and give me The Holy Spirit as the Promise of the eternal reward. I will be Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Christianity as a religion I do not like. But my relationship with God is priceless. I made a decision years ago that He was first and I would follow Him. I cannot build my faith or hope in flesh. It will fail.

I trust Him. I know Him. I love Him. He is my guide. That has kept me on the straight and narrow and deeply rooted.

Being a Christian means you are in the Body of Christ. Boredom, IMO, is a flesh driven feeling rather than a Holy Spirit filled frame of mind. In other words, we can all be bored to death about anything in life including church attendance however, when it comes to our personal relationship with our Creator who lives in us, there is no room for boredom as you walk in the Spirit daily. Christianity has to do with the inner man and not so much the outer.
Blessings

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” ~Matt 7:24-27

It sounds like this passage describes your situation. If you know Jesus as your personal Savior, there is never any boredom. But if you are looking to faith as a form of entertainment, you will be distracted by other things that entertain you more. That is a house built on sand.

If you are to have a true relationship with God, you surrender your life to His perfect will. You build a deep, intimate and intense relationship with Him, and follow Him and His ways. It is not about entertainment. It is about relationship with the one who created you and loves you. If you easily reject Him for other things, I suspect you never really encountered Him fully. As others have above, I recommend that you turn to Him fully. He will not force you to do so, you must choose. I have never known a person who has a true relationship with the Lord to ever regret it, so I hope you will choose well.

Hello Ananda,

I am sad to hear that you are a cross roads with being a Christian. Two things come to mind from what you spoke.

When we receive our salvation or become regenerated by the work of Jesus on the cross. We now come into a relation with God himself. He is still God and He should always be lifted high in our thoughts. Yet we are still humans who make our own choices. One of them is to get upset with God for one thing or another. It we get upset too many times, we can become cold hearted in that relationship. Typically the Holy Spirit helps you to discover discovery if you are in that condition and work it out. To restore that relationship, to reclaim the joy we have with God with us.

The other thing that came to mind is a little more blunt. I only say it due to if that is the case. Then you should be bold and truthful about your sitaution with others.

I Never Knew You
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
-Matthew 7:21-23 ESV

Jesus himself made it plain that there are many people who go to church every Sunday, pay their tithes, and show up for bible study. They have the outward appearance of a believer, but in their spirit they never recieved their salvation or become regenerated. Many of these people don't know it and others do it intentionally to put on a face.

I too am over 10 years since I been saved. My church life has been a joke for over a year+. Sometimes I question if I am even, dispite how far I come that I couldn't have done it on my own. I lost my flame, yet the Holy Spirit breathed on the ambers of my faith. I have no clue how everything is going to come together, and all I got is forums like this to be part of something bigger than myself. Jesus has bought and paid for me thru and thru.

If you can't find ambers to be blown on. Be honest with yourself and do what you truly believe in your heart. You will be better for it.
