There is a reason the UK wishes to leave I would appreciate it if any English could chime in

One understandable motivation is that small and medium business owners aren't happy about being edged out of the market by multinationals, which do well within the EU's regulatory framework. It's possible small businesses will fare better after a Brexit, but as the economy is likely to take a significant hit, maybe not. People won't have much spending money. The idea of leaving the EU to regain our 'sovereignty' is a bit of a chimera, I'm not sure what people mean by that exactly but we can't just do whatever we want whether we're part of the EU or not. The UK needs to be part of some arrangement of trade partnerships, finance models, and so on. A deal with the US will make a lowering of standards in a number of areas inevitable, leaving the majority of people (i.e. people who are not wealthy) more vulnerable to becoming tools for the rich, to be satisified with whatever gets handed down to them.

Many's the time throughout our history when the UK pulled the strings on the USA,
If you go back 2 or 3 centuries, yes.
... suggesting that the fifth largest economy in the world will immediately become the "lapdog" of any other nation if there were no EU-type entanglements to make it so, seems just unrealistic.
We are only the fifth largest economy because of our membership of the EU. Already the pound is tumbling, inflation is rising and jobs are being lost - and we haven't even left yet!

Never mind - if we do end up leaving, the majority will have their say at the next election and we will rejoin the EU.

To rejoin the eu will require all member states to agree. With the HOme office promising to treat all eu citizens without settled status like they have done the wind rush immigrants, the govt are clearly ensuring that a future pro-eu party will find it impossible to rejoin by deliberately antagonising the eu.

Oh no. You have to include a number of important episodes from much more recent times. ;)
How in the first and second world wars did we pull string? It was the Germans who launched unrestricted attacks on shipping in the first, and Japan and Germany declaring war in the second.

It's hard to say what it will lead to, but it will be a point of division that many people are seriously not ok with.
IIRC, the Good Friday Agreement spells out that the UK will never institute such a border between Ireland and N Ireland.

Ah but if the EU does it, they are wholly to blame:doh:. The EU has to set a 'hard' border else it becomes a smugglers paradise.

The UK has the same issue. The UK doesn't want a free flow of goods (or people) using non-existent border controls between Ireland and N Ireland.

ETA: For the EU, an open border would be more status-quo. IMO, the UK brexiters want border controls there more than the EU does, otherwise a large reason for leaving the EU is defeated.

Oh, that's rich coming from the land of spotted dick in a can, black pudding, and $100 all-you-can-eat cucumber sandwich "teas".

I'm hardly an apologist for America's culinary predilections, but c'mon.

Problem? Steam operated microwave simulation devices, popularly known as ‘very fast shakers’ or just VSFs, are quite common. Like we say, where there’s steam there’s a way. Microwaveable is just a convenient international shorthand.

Fron my conversations with brexiters it's mainly about having a cake and eating it, also notions of "taking back control" without any real understanding of what "control" means.

It's not very convenient when you put it in an actual microwave.

It’s the default. Do not be surprised to see Boris prorogue parliament, or call an election to coincide with exiting the eu.

Proroguing parliament has already been ruled out by the speaker.
As for calling an election - our partners in the EU have already said that they would happily delay brexit for either a second referendum or a general election.
Brexit will not happen

The PM has the power to prorogue parliament, not the speaker. And Boris will not be asking the EU for a delay.

Yeah, you guys are on your way out. I don't think there will be another stay of the execution. Have fun with the will of the people. (Elections have consequences, kids. Tell your parents)

That is not true, thankfully. the speaker can and will stop Boris from doing that.
Boris won't be PM a week after parliament opens. The PM of a caretaker govt will most definitely ask our partners for an extension.

But I've been reading some articles that suggest Marcon might not be willing to grant it.
