Spare the guitar; spoil the child

On June 30, a 14-year-old boy was asleep in bed when Sa “tried to wake him up for church,” the charges state. “(The boy) decided to go back to bed and not get ready for church.”

Sa became upset by this and “picked up a guitar and attempted to strike (the boy) in the head,” according to charging documents.

The boy blocked the guitar from hitting his head, but Sa then hit the boy’s arm with the guitar four times, causing a broken arm, the charges state.

When I was about 14 my friend's father attacked her, putting his hand around her throat and banging her against the wall, because she didn't want to go to church. I think it comes from caring more about public image than about your child's physical, mental and emotional well-being. It really put me off the whole church thing. I bet it happens all the time, couples arguing and mum shouting for everyone to get ready.

Church shouldn't be that early in the morning anyway. There's just no good reason.

I think it's super silly to force older kids to go to church anyways bc it's not going to be as meaningful if it's something you are made to do vs what you want to do. Once the kid is old enough to stay at home alone I think it should be a choice.

Sounds like the father is not mentally stable enough to own a guitar.

yeah better pass some red flag laws for people owning guitars ;o) I mean he could have killed him with it.

I won't go into the reasons that I believe it's important for teens to attend church. However, there are four Sundays in a month that can be negotiated. Pick two Sundays to go to church and two to sleep in.

I'm a teen. :) I do think it's important to go to church but it's a million times more meaningful if you go there by choice & not bc you're forced. It is nice that you negotiate tho.

Where the problem lies is when the older children don't want to go. What do you, as a parent, do? Scripturally, I think "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" warrants requiring church attendance. In the end, it WILL be the child's decision, no matter how hard that is for the parent to accept; but I think Dad is justified in drawing the line in the sand and requiring it one service a week, if that's what it comes to. It may not justify child abuse if the child still defies Dad, but it does justify all the same punishments as for anything else. Hopefully the kids will want to go, and go to more than just Sunday morning. Get involved with the youth group; all that.

Clearly the problem stems from watching too much Quick Draw McGraw as a child. ;)

Clearly this article proves that all parents who insist their teenage children go to church are potential abusers.
Clearly nobody suggested such and you are just getting outraged about a strawman.
