Windows 7 Support Ending Soon

You can upgrade to Win10 for free. It's a bit heavier than Win7. I like it once you know how to limit its intrusiveness, and have done this on many machines. For my own use though, I switched to Linux three years ago (MX Linux to be precise), and it breathes new life into older hardware.

I love Win 7. People are calming 10 is safer and better. But that's only because its newer and thus hackers (and what not) haven't found all of its flaws yet. They said the same about Win 7 the first few years too.

I also don't like how much Win 10 changes things. Some of it may be for the better but I don't like it and find repairing systems with it to be a pain. I know learning new things is part of being a tech but to many tech companies release new things constantly and expect everyone to keep up.

To be fair I don't need Win support. Never used it. But if you aren't good with PCs then I'd say use Win 10 since you may need their support.

Honestly? Once Windows 10 came out a few years ago I haven't really looked back and I've been using Windows 10 ever since. But I used windows 98 for years (Up until like 2009 or 10. I stopped using it because after a while I couldn't find drivers for it anymore and it was becoming a pain to even use it) and upgraded to Windows 7 for a while after that until Windows 10 came out. But honestly? Windows 10 is leaps and bounds better than Windows 7. It's just much more user friendly, it finds and updates your drivers instantly and microsoft will continue to make updates to it for a while now. Well into the mid 2020's anyway.

I know a lot about computers so I really like Windows 10 but it's really good for people who don't know much about computers also. Sorry I didn't mean to sound like a salesman selling Windows 10. I'll stop talking lol.

On topic though Windows 7 was a great OS and It's a shame they stopped support for it. My parents still use Windows 7 on their laptops and will probably until the day they die. They don't want to learn Windows 10 even if it is really easy to learn. They just figure since they're in their 60's now that they're done learning about the new things that have come out over the years. So it's a shame that since my parents are still using Windows 7 that they can't get customer support for it anymore. So I'm stuck being their tech guy trying to work on an OS that's now 12 years old lol. Then again I used windows 98 up until I couldn't anymore because I found it to be a fantastic OS. So I don't blame them I guess.

The only reason Windows 10 is "safer" than Windows 7 is because Microsoft is still updating it and will be for at least another 7-10 years or so. Microsoft stopped updating Windows 7 a few years after Windows 10 came out so hackers pretty much know how to get into the OS by now. Honestly? Microsoft should update all of their OS's. Maybe not in features but in security so that it's a lot harder for hackers to hack a 12+ year old Operating System and an operating system that microsoft considers out of date. They're trying to encourage people to learn and buy Windows 10 but not everyone (my parents included) want to learn windows 10 and are fine with Windows 7. So... yeah... they should continue to do security updates for older OS's.

I think he means once you remove Cortana and all of the features of Windows 10 that ask for your personal information and intrude on your privacy. Microsoft is really big on butting into our lives.

Oh It's possible to hack any OS. But Microsoft regularly updating Windows 10 does make it harder for hackers. I mean I seriously have to restart my computer at least once every two weeks because some new update came out.

Win10 will download a good gig of updates per month. Yearly, it gives you the equivalent of a new OS, at 4GB+ of download. So there is that to put up with, though it must be said the update process itself is far better than previous Windows editions.

Start by answering "No" to all offers upon first boot. Then turn off most notifications. Use a lightweight third party anti-malware rather than Windows Defender.

If you want real user password security you'll have to use an online account and encrypt the local drive. But keep backups of your data.

I personally love Windows 7 (I chose it over Windows 8 when I ordered my laptop). I hate the mobile phone aesthetic of Windows 8 as well, and am concerned about the user data acquisition controversy behind newer operating systems. The fact that many of their services may eventually become subscription-based is also concerning.

Might be time to look into Linux.

Still using 7 Home for a few reasons.

Don't want to relearn how to find and do everything all over again.

7's stable, as most recent OS's are if they have the right hardware/drivers and such behind them.

What do I get that I don't already have for a pricey OS upgrade? Not much. I think I only bought 7 as an upgrade from XP, because I needed 7 to get the DX 11 (I think) updates that MS wouldn't give us in a stand alone download for 7. IOW they forced us the upgrade and still do if we want Direct X's latest versions, something it turns out, I really didn't need. To upgrade would be like buying a brand new car with a few extra options, when I already have a brand new car, and many of those options can be downloaded free, some of which may be better than the ones with the upgrade.

So, I see no reason to pay for a way overpriced OS that I can use comfortably as I wait for a slowly, but surely closing in, up to par with Windows version of Linux where the problem will then be permanently solved. I think the gaming capabilities are pretty much all that's holding me back now.

I'm going to love it when MS will do well to charge $20 for their OS and still get it due the completion with "free".

EDIT - I change my mind. Windows 10 is a good upgrade option for Windows 7 users. Because it's the latest version, and a free upgrade. Should have given it a chance when I first received my laptop. I apologize for bringing up Linux in a Windows 7 thread.

I'm a hold-out. I used Windows 7 until I had a crash that I couldn't recover from. Then I used Linux Ubuntu until my poor old computer died completely. I had to buy a new computer and decided to try Windows 10. My thinking was to change to Linux if I couldn't stand Windows 10. I have been pleasantly surprised and am still using Windows 10. There are obviously a few things I don't like about Windows 10, but I have to be fair and say there are a few things that I don't like about Linux.

We've been using Windows 7 since we bought our laptop in 2011. I've liked it pretty well, especially all the cool and easy to use personalizing features.

What we'll probably do is update our laptop to Windows 8.1 since we already have that on our desktop computer and like it okay. It's too bad it doesn't have so many personalizing features, though. I'll miss those.

Windows 7 is nice , actually my updates are turned off the less stuff that company puts inside the better , windows 10 is garbage I simply can't use it there is too much agenda in it for ads and it does what it pleases whenever it pleases to do so sometimes you are in work and it will start updating just because .

Since I can't be bothered replying to every single individual comment:
- you can still upgrade any Windows 7/8 to Windows 10 for free. It'll recognise the product key and activate with it.
- there are features and vulnerabilities in Windows 7 that can't be patched because: it doesn't make sense; it's expensive to pay people specifically to do that when there are newer products to support; there are enough bugs in 10 without having to also worry about them in 7. You could argue there's no point in bringing out a new product, and that's a whole other discussion.
- Ideally your choices are either upgrade to Windows 10 or migrate to MacOS (which also has planned obsolescence and devices will stop upgrading after a certain age) or any flavour or Linux (which isn't ideal if you don't know what you're doing or have someone who can help you).
- Hardware manufacturers have been slowly dwindling their support for 7 (I think Intel stuff from Gen 6 isn't "compatible" and AMD Ryzen stuff isn't).

I... wouldn't. If you really want 10 to behave like Windows 8.1 there are settings you can tweak to do that, but Windows 10 is way more reliable and easier to use. Not to mention mainstream support ended last year and extended support will end in 2023, so you'll be in the same boat again in 3 years. You're far better off getting it out of the way now. And like I mentioned, Windows 7 and 8 licenses will still activate in Windows 10, so you don't need to spend money on it.
