Yes there are real concerns about the changing climate. I only point out that the solutions proposed from political circles do not actually deal with those concerns. They do not stop climate change or even slow it down nor are there many reasonable proposals for dealing with the consequences of a changing climate. . Mainly the proposed political solutions just redistribute wealth and power while watching the climate change. I am unaware of minimum prices for plastic bags doing anything much in reducing plastic waste. Perhaps you could provide the information I lack? Certainly the problem of plastic waste is one that could be solved fairly easily as it has only one cause , that being human wastefulness and therefore is controllable. Unlike climate change that most likely must be worked around rather than controlled due to the multiplicity of causes, many of which are completely out of our control.
Single-use plastic carrier bags charge: data in England for 2016 to 2017

Plastic bag sales in England down by a third in last year

Since the charges came into force there has been a 90% fall in the use of single use bags.

I suspect it is less like window dressing and more like bait and switch. That would be the attitude behind the expression "never let a crisis go to waste." . Find something that people will agree is a problem then propose as a solution something you desire that does not in reality address that problem. Meet every objection to the proposed solution by claiming the critic is denying that the problem exists or has some reason for wanting the problem to continue to exist.

I don't know. I think we're stuck with solutions that don't do much because that is all anyone will accept.

There are also a lot of people who definitely do deny the problem exists, and those who benefit from ignoring it.

Thanks for the info.

My local county government just recently simply outlawed the practice of giving out single use plastic bags. It hasn't taken effect yet so I can't give any results of that law. One unintended consequence might end up being an increase in the use of paper bags which of course would require more trees used and more pollution from the paper making process. I never use single use bags to carry groceries so it won't affect me but other people are already complaining about it as much as I remember people complaining about stores going to plastic bags from paper ones years ago. That was not from environmental concerns but for economic reasons.

I find it astonishing that the amount of recycled paper in toilet paper is dropping markedly. Seriously most toilet paper is from virgin forests:doh:!.

the Clean Air Act and similar environmental legislation are hailed as proof that government regulation can be good

Americans Are Living Longer, Thanks to the Clean Air Act

Government regulators went after the big industrial polluters, the primary source of the problem, and US air is arguably significantly cleaner as a result

note that I'm aware of no one who attributes the improvements to the myriad laws imposed upon individual private property owners whose lands can say be construed as wetlands

those regulations are like (in some sense) going after hunters and target practicers for the actions of mass shooters

going after the wrong parties unrelated to any crimes caused or pollutions passed on to the public

Some people prefer a healthy and thriving biosphere.
Some people prefer not to choke on the emissions of their neighbors.

Some people prefer to be able to swim in their local river or bay without getting a rash, bacterial infection, or worse.

Some people prefer to be able to drink their local streams and not die.

Some people prefer to be able to plant vegetables in their gardens without worrying about soil and groundwater contamination.

Some people prefer not to inhale lead or asbestos.

We live in our environment. It's not an option.

Using toilet paper is rather arcane anyway. I prefer H20 (bidet).
