The Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) is in lockdown after the government revoked a special status granted to the troubled region.

On Monday, Interior Minister Amit Shah told India’s parliament that the federal government would scrap Article 370, a constitutional provision that grants special status and allows the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir to make its own laws

Article 370 of the Indian constitution carves out a special status to the state of J&K. It also limits the Indian parliament’s power to make laws for the state. In effect, the special status, which is described as “temporary” allows the state of Jammu & Kashmir to have its own constitution, its own flag and take decisions except for any matter that is related to defense and foreign affairs. The temporary provision was included in the constitution on 17 October, 1949.

Thus this provision has been part of India's constitution since the formation of modern India.

India has deployed tens of thousands of troops across the Kashmir valley in anticipation of a backlash of the revoke.

Indian authorities banned public movements, shut down schools and colleges indefinitely and put two former chief ministers of J&K — Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti — under house arrest ahead of the announcement.

India’s government wants to strengthen its influence over its only Muslim-majority region.

Kashmir has been a bone of contention between India and Pakistan since the partition of British India into the two countries.

Pew Pew Pew. I remember when someone attacked the Indian congress over Kashmir I think. Could get real ugly real fast. Also they are both nuclear powers to some degree now.
They were during their last war over Kashmir, too. I doubt they'll use nukes, but there is a real danger of armed conflict.

Indian-administered Kashmir has been on lockdown since the Indian government decided on Monday to strip the region of its special constitutional status.

Phone networks and the internet have been cut off since Sunday evening.

Tens of thousands of troops have been patrolling the streets.

Instances of protest and stone-throwing have been reported, despite the communications blackout and a curfew.

What has helped many countries deal with the complexities of having a state / region with its own unique ethnic, cultural, and historical identity is to grant semi-autonomy. Let them govern themselves, while remaining part of the nation for the sake of peace.

Revoking this status or cracking down on the autonomy you have given people, and rolling back freedoms, generally doesn't go well. The Chinese are making this horrific mistake in Xinjiang. Prayers for India, Kashmir, and Pakistan.

Lord, have mercy.

Amid the ongoing tensions with Pakistan over the abrogation of the Article 370, Pakistani forces have started moving equipment to their forward bases close to Ladakh, government sources told ANI news agency.

"Three C-130 transport aircraft of the Pakistan Air Force were used on Saturday to ferry equipment to their Skardu air base opposite the Union Territory of Ladakh. The Indian agencies concerned are keeping a close eye on the movement of Pakistanis along the border areas," sources told ANI.

Sources said the equipment moved to the forward operating base could be support equipment for fighter aircraft operations.

Pakistanis are most likely to move in their JF-17 fighter planes to the Skardu air field, they said.

Al Jazeera:

Pakistan's army has said at least three Pakistani and five Indian soldiers have been killed after a cross-border exchange of fire in the disputed region of Kashmir, prompting a denial by New Delhi that there were fatalities among its forces.

...three civilians were also killed on Thursday in the same cross-border firing at Batal sector on the Pakistani side of the LoC.

An Indian army spokesperson denied the Pakistani army's statement. "No casualties. This assertion is wrong," the spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

The problem with giving Kashmir autonomy is that it has already been divided once and Pakistan has the other part and wants all of it. The Indians are afraid that the Muslim population in their part will throw in with Pakistan and their part of Kashmir will be lost to them.
