President Donald Trump has on multiple occasions brought up buying Greenland from the Danish government and the White House counsel's office has looked into the possibility, two sources told CNN on Thursday.

Trump's interest in buying Greenland was first reported on Thursday by The Wall Street Journal. The Journal reported that people familiar with the deliberations said the President has raised the issue during meetings and dinners, asking aides and listening seriously about the possibility and advantages of owning Greenland. He also asked his White House counsel to research the matter, according to two of the people.

After a little more climate change, it'll be perfect of Mar-a-Lago II.

....why though?

I can understand why Truman might have had interest following World War II, there's strategic advantage, and given what had just happened in Europe that strategic advantage made sense.

It's 2019 and Western Europe consists of allies and trading partners. We have NATO.

This president has a serious case of frat guy insecurity.

Yes, I understand the US offered to buy Greenland after the war...the Danes declined.

I don't know why Trump would want it...unless he wants to watch the ice sheet melt....

I'm not sure myself but my guess is it's about benefiting national infrastructure. China has something similar going on, the Belt and Road initiative. Where they lend money to a nation and when that nation can't pay, China will take big pieces of property as compensation.

It's not Greenland's choice. Greenland is owned by Denmark ... and according to your article:
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who took office earlier this year, has not commented on the reports.

She is set to visit Greenland this weekend and has said she is "very much looking forward" to it
.
Money talks.

No money doesn’t talk in this case. Danish members of the government have already called this nonsense. Their PM just has to be more diplomatic (remember when heads of state did that?).

Greenland is one of the last large land areas which has not been fully prospected for mineral wealth, and apparently there is a lot up there under the rapidly disappearing ice.

Indeed. So even without the small issue of 50,000 Danish citizens who have absolutely no intention of becoming Americans, why on earth would Denmark sell a potential goldmine? This makes zero sense from any perspective, but because Trump babbled it to some aides, people are now talking as if it’s a real thing, and not just one crazy mans latest burger induced fantasy.

As noted in the OP, Trump is upping the ante for China. China wants into Greenland, Trump is responding. Point, Counterpoint. Competition is a beautiful thing.
There is a difference between gaining influence on a country through trade and industry and buying the country wholesale.

Trump thinks just a little outside the box. Such thinking can be very effective at times.

The people in the territory of Greenland now know they are in a much greater position of power than they had thought previously. It's a good thing. Noting that Greenland divorced itself from the EU some years ago.

Greenland citizens are still EU citizens, but by separating the territory into an associated member they get to also not have to share fish stocks. They’re literally getting the best of both worlds, including still getting EU funding for regeneration programs.

I thought their opinion doesn't matter because Greenland is owned by Denmark? Your post #8

Not at all what I said.
Really? Then what did you mean?

On the one hand you say that it's not their decision and they are owned by denmark, on the other hand you claim that they now know that they are in a position of power and that they have divorced themselves from the EU (which isn't exactly true).

Greenmark doesn't want to be sold to the USA, and denmark isn't selling. That's the end of it, as it had been the last time the USA attempted this.

Divorce, as an analogy here, is more true than not. Greenland objected to over-controlling EU rules and was released from them. Fortunately, Greenland separated from the EU during the early days of the EU before the EU became strong enough to punish those wanting out. Greenland is now classified as an EU territory due to its being owned by Denmark.

Maybe. I suspect there's more to the story given China's recent attempts to gain a foothold there. If nothing else it would seem that Trump has very publicly declared to China that Greenland is off limits, presumably to head off anything like what happened in Panama where China now controls a port of entry to the Panama Canal.
