Several Catholics have already mentioned Mary being conceived without sin however, it is also commonly held (although I don't believe it is doctrine) that St. Joseph although conceived with original sin; never committed any personal sin.

And the story broadens...

Apparently you have never told anyone that we CAN live without sin.

If you regard sin as nothing more than a finite list of "thou shalt nots," you might think so.

Or, if you know the will of God for every step of your life as Jesus did, and you perfectly execute it, as Jesus did.

is an unborn baby without sin? if not, then none of us, including John the Baptist, Enoch and others are without sin, unless you are born of a virgin and conceived of by the Holy Spirit.

Do you believe it is necessary that we be born again? And what does that mean to you regarding sin?

I never read that one before. Joseph did have a sinful nature, as he considered divorcing Mary IIRC.

That doesn't mean the Christian had never sinned.

Of course not. We don't receive the seed of the Father until we are born again. But that is a general statement about most people. Jesus is different, and I believe so is John the Baptist.

That is a bit of side-tracking here, as we were discussing those who did not die.
But, if wickedness was the reason for their destruction, a lack of wickedness would end up with the possibility of not seeing death.

Someone already side-tracked and said that Abel and Cain did not sin because there was no law. I just took it to the ridiculous conclusion.

I've never heard anyone use those verses to justify a Christian sinning, but only to point out that Christians do sin...without justification.

Then you're not paying attention.

As for John the Baptist, the passage says, "When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:41)." Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, not necessarily John. Regardless, I believe this means that she was controlled by the Holy Spirit more than having received the Holy Spirit in the sense of being born again since Jesus hadn't risen from the dead yet; having not been born.

"Filled with" literally means Elizabeth received it. I don't know how else you can describe it. If she did not sin, the Crucifixion and Resurrection were not needed for her to receive it. Was she a sinner?

If fetuses are people, then that means millions of people never sinned.

That is a totally different topic, but fetuses go to heaven if they are not born because they never sinned. You need to be saved after committing your first sin.

Well, that is not my understanding. I don't believe she was born again before the Holy Spirit was offered. Jesus had to live, die and be resurrected before the Holy Spirit indwelt somebody forever. It may have come upon her like other saints in the Old Testament, but she wasn't born again. But, we can agree to disagree and let the Lord sort it out for us individually.

You missed it.

Luke 1:15 John the Baptist:
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.

Luke 1:41 Elizabeth:
And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

Yes, she probably was controlled by the Holy Spirit. But how do you explain the word "filled" instead of an obvious phrase like "controlled by" in that verse?

Never met one who wasn't a sinner.

I think Paul was the one that said, if we think no sin is in us, we are a liar.
Not a direct bible quote.
Memory test.

I think you are citing 1 John 1:8, but John is writing of two different kinds of men and their very different walks.
Those who cannot say they have no sin are those who walk in darkness.
The others walk in the light, and the blood of Jesus Christ has washed away ALL their past sins.
They can say they have no sin...but it is incumbent on us to remain in the light.

Scripture shows pretty clearly that God takes a person's knowledge into account in His judgment.

A fetus is not saved because it's sinless, a fetus is saved because it is absolutely ignorant.

Not ignorant - a fetus is unable to know sin. Ignorance is a choice.
