In this time and season I find that my life benefits from music without words. I am bored with the worship music today for there is rarely a song that sounds different from all the others yet I know worship is not about me.

I sometimes enjoy listening to instrumental music while working on the computer. It's great for background noise, and the lack of vocals helps me to concentrate on the work itself, rather than the music. I think the various genres each have their own, unique utility.

I don't listen to Christian music as much as I used to; it does seem to get repetitive after awhile. The lyrics and melodies of many of the songs today sound basically the same. Every once in awhile I'll come across a new song that tries something new. But, I think in general it's become too predictable and "safe". Christian artists should push the boundaries more, and not be afraid to experiment / try new things.

Most of the music I listen to is classical. I will play jazz every now and then. Worship music is a rarity. I like the absence of words. I can appreciate the melody without distractions.

As of late I’ve been testing my response to different music forms. I notice my mood, clarity and attention span. Some are better than others and I’m leaning in their direction.

I’ve gotten decades of mileage out of Phil Keaggy's THE WIND AND THE WHEAT album. Purely instrumental, and lovely. Here is the title track (the rest are there on YT):

Instrumental music is such a gift to my life. It aids me while I'm studying, providing lovely sound to block out noise, and not distracting me with words so I can concentrate on the ones I'm reading and writing. I'm a dancer and have long loved using instrumental music. I feel the absence of lyrics enables me to tell my own story through the dance.

I often listen to instrumental covers of popular songs, including worship music. I also love movie soundtracks featuring the stunning work of brilliant composers. I've been listening to the Amelie soundtracks my whole life. I was sick quite a bit when I was small, and the music was soothing to me. Many years before I ever was mature enough to watch Schindler's List I was listening to the exquisite soundtrack. I also adore the soundtrack from Little Miss Sunshine, much of which is also instrumental!

I recently danced to a guitar cover of the theme song from Last of the Mohicans. The dance had been choreographed to another instrumental song, and I'd gotten it cleared in advance of the performance. Then the day of I was told there'd been a mistake and I'd need to choose another song. I think this one ended up fitting the dance very well!

Instrumentals are great. The listener can imbue a song with whatever meaning they like. That said, the voice is also an instrument. In my opinion, the best lyrics also allow the listener find their own meaning in a song.
