Doctrine and Covenants 130:20-21

These verses teach about the eternal significance of obedience.

20 There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—

21 And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.

...Before the foundations of this world

“All blessings that were ordained for man by the Council of Heaven were on conditions of obedience to the law thereof.”
Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (2007), 164.

...When we obtain any blessing

The scriptures contain many instances of specific blessings promised to us when we obey certain commandments. Here are just a few examples. Can you find more?

  • Guidance and answers to prayers if we keep the commandment to “be thou humble” (see D&C 112:10).

  • Protection against the powers of darkness if we follow the prophet (see D&C 21:4–6)...
Line upon Line: D&C 130:20–21

“...These promises, when obtained, if ever by us, will not be because Peter, John, and the other Apostles … walked in the fear of God and had power and faith to prevail and obtain them; but it will be because we, ourselves, have faith and approach God in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, even as they did; and when these promises are obtained, they will be promises directly to us, or they will do us no good. They will be communicated for our benefit, being our own property (through the gift of God), earned by our own diligence in keeping His commandments, and walking uprightly before Him.”
History of the Church, 2:19–22; punctuation modernized; paragraph divisions altered; from “The Elders of the Church in Kirtland, to Their Brethren Abroad,” Jan. 22, 1834, published in Evening and Morning Star, Mar. 1834, p. 144

“Our Church is founded upon the premise that spiritual growth and exaltation must be earned by the efforts of the individual.”
Henry D. Moyle, Improvement Era, December 1937, p. 787

"Immortality connotes life without end. Eternal life, on the other hand, connotes quality of life — exaltation, the highest type of immortality, the kind of life enjoyed by God himself. It is in the attainment of eternal life, which man must earn in mortality, that he reaches his full potentiality."
Marion G. Romney of the First Presidency, General Conference, October 1978, Ensign, November, 1978, p. 14

"On that day no one will escape the penalty of his deeds, no one will fail to receive the blessings he has earned. Again, the parable of the sheep and the goats gives us assurance that there will be total justice”
Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness, pp. 304–5
Lesson 27: Parable of the Sheep and the Goats

In order to qualify for exaltation in the celestial kingdom, we must gain the trust of the Lord here on earth. We gain the trust of the Lord through earning it, and that is accomplished through our actual performance in living His gospel and keeping our covenants. In other words, we earn the trust of the Lord by doing His will.
Richard J. Maynes, “Keeping Our Covenants,” Ensign, Nov. 2004, 92
Keeping Our Covenants

"There is no need for you or for me, in this enlightened age when the fulness of the gospel has been restored, to sail uncharted seas or to travel unmarked roads in search of truth. A loving Heavenly Father has plotted our course and provided an unfailing guide—even obedience. A knowledge of truth and the answers to our greatest questions come to us as we are obedient to the commandments of God."
President Thomas S. Monson, Obedience Brings Blessings, General Conference, April 2013
Obedience Brings Blessings

Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 25
23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.

Obedience is a very important aspect of the gospel:

(Old Testament | Exodus 19:5)

5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

(Old Testament | Deuteronomy 4:30)

30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

(Old Testament | Deuteronomy 8:20)

20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.

(Old Testament | Deuteronomy 11:26 - 28)

26 ¶ Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;

27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:

28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known.

(Old Testament | Deuteronomy 28:62)

62 And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God.
(Old Testament | Jeremiah 12:17)

17 But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.

(Old Testament | Daniel 7:27)

27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

(New Testament | Acts 5:32)

32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

(New Testament | Romans 6:16)

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

(New Testament | Hebrews 5:7 - 9)

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

Sinners receive wages of the second death. That is what they earn.

The gift of God is eternal life.

God's righteousness is a gift ( Rom 5:17 ); God has provided for us an "indescribable" gift ( 2 Cor 9:15 ). Paul talks about the gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12). Those who have tasted the heavenly gift have been enlightened ( Heb 6:4 ). Paul is a servant of the gospel by the gift of God's grace ( Eph 3:7 ).

In general, in Scripture the word "gift" has three senses: gifts men give to men; sacrificial offerings presented to God; and gifts God gives to men, especially in connection with salvation, righteousness, and his grace.

"In theological terms, we speak of a double imputation that takes place in justification. This double imputation is taught in texts such as 2 Corinthians 5:21, where Paul says plainly, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Here we read that our sin is imputed to Christ. We are the offending party. He is guiltless. He perfectly kept the law. Yet, on the cross, God poured out His wrath on Christ. Why? Because our sin was imputed to Christ. Christ took upon Himself our sin. Our great debit was put on His account. Christ paid the horrific penalty as the cup of God’s wrath was poured out upon Him.

"There is also a second imputation. Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us. He not only takes our debit, but we also get His credit. Christ paid the penalty we could never satisfy, but He also kept the law perfectly, which we can’t do either. Consequently, God credits to us His righteousness. We stand before God clothed in Christ’s righteousness. We can actually say that we are saved by works—not at all by our works, but instead by Christ’s works, His perfect obedience, on our behalf. One theologian said that two of the most beautiful words in the Bible are for us. Jesus lived and died—and rose again—for us. All of His work was done on our behalf...

"The doctrine of the person and work of Christ is the gospel. Thus, the doctrine of imputation—the crediting of our sin to Him and of His obedience to us—is essential to this gospel. It shows us why the gospel is such good news—Christ really has done it all. He has met our Creator’s standard of perfection for us, so we never need to fear the Lord’s wrath if we are in Christ by faith alone. This doctrine of imputation can lead us only to praise the glory and grace of God. This doctrine of imputation tells us that salvation truly is of Him and of Him alone."
The Doctrine of Imputation: The Ligonier Statement on Christology

Titus 3
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that
they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works.

Ephesians 5:8
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

Eternal life is the GIFT. It cannot be earned otherwise it is not a gift. Do you or do you not believe the Bible? We know that you don't believe Romans 6:23.

Romans 6
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Of course I believe Romans 6:23. I also believe these scriptures:
(New Testament | Matthew 19:16 - 17)

16 ¶ And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

(Old Testament | Exodus 20:5 - 6)

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

(New Testament | John 14:23 - 24)

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

(New Testament | 1 Peter 4:17 - 19)

17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Romans 6:23 was written after Christ purchased the gift of eternal life for His followers.

Galatians 3
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Jesus purchased the gift of eternal life for believers when He died on the cross. Eternal life is the gift that has been paid for. Most Mormons refuse to believe that.

You want credit for your works instead of being grateful for the gift that He paid for with His life.

Romans 3
21But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through
faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26
To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

(New Testament | 1 Peter 4:17 - 19)

17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

You said: "Romans 6:23 was written after Christ purchased the gift of eternal life for His followers." ALL of the New testament was written after Christ purchased the gift of eternal life for His followers including the scriptures I provided.
You said: "

Jesus purchased the gift of eternal life for believers when He died on the cross. Eternal life is the gift that has been paid for. Most Mormons refuse to believe that.

You want credit for your works instead of being grateful for the gift that He paid for with His life."

However Jesus made it very clear that eternal life is for those who keep the commandments:
(New Testament | Matthew 19:16 - 17)

16 ¶ And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

We are not looking for credit or recognition, we are doing what is necessary to have eternal life because we believe in what Jesus taught. Satan does not want people to have eternal life, he would rather that people did not keep the commandments so he can have them. It is our duty to keep the commandments:

(Old Testament | Ecclesiastes 12:13 - 14)

13 ¶ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

However Jesus made it very clear that eternal life is for those who keep the commandments:
(New Testament | Matthew 19:16 - 17)

Matthew relates what Jesus said to a
Jew before He paid the price of our sins. Gentiles are not under the 613 commandments.

16 ¶ And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life,
keep the commandments.

"The Talmud notes that the Hebrew numerical value (gematria) of the word 'Torah' is 611, and combining Moses's 611 commandments with the first two of the Ten Commandments which were the only ones heard directly from God, adds up to 613."
- wikipedia

We are not looking for credit or recognition, we are doing what is necessary to have eternal life because we believe in what Jesus taught.

Yes, you expect more that recognition from God. Your church keeps records. And you think the record of your works guarantee eternal life. The Bible says otherwise. God did not teach endowments and secret handshakes and baptisms for countless dead people. God did not tell you to follow lying prophets. You don't teach the gospel. You teach Mormonism.

Satan does not want people to have eternal life, he would rather that people did not keep the commandments so he can have them. It is our duty to keep the commandments.

We are not obligated to keep the 613 commandments, and I doubt that you even know them, let alone keep them.

If God is going to judge your works and your preaching of a false gospel, He will say "I never knew you."

Galatians 2:14
"But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?"

Galatians 1
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

As Christians, we have everything we need:

Colossians 1
9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; 12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

We know God's will, and that is why we won't embrace a false gospel.

Matthew relates what Jesus said to a
Jew before He paid the price of our sins. Gentiles are not under the 613 commandments.

"The Talmud notes that the Hebrew numerical value (gematria) of the word 'Torah' is 611, and combining Moses's 611 commandments with the first two of the Ten Commandments which were the only ones heard directly from God, adds up to 613."

You said: "Matthew relates what Jesus said to a Jew before He paid the price of our sins. Gentiles are not under the 613 commandments.

Jesus said otherwise:

(New Testament | Matthew 5:17 - 20)

17 ¶
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Then Jesus went on to give the higher law. The true gospel is to
KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS.
I will continue to teach the true gospel of Jesus Christ
