Yes, that sounds promising. Although desalination is no silver bullet - keep in mind that the salt and other nasty byproducts that are extracted from the water has to be taken care of somehow.

ETA: Doh, @JackRT beat me to it.

Several years ago I did read how Israel also developed ways to deal with the salty brine.

Turning desalination waste into a useful resource
Process developed at MIT could turn concentrated brine into useful chemicals, making desalination more efficient.

If we continue to ignore AGW then some or all of that may be forced on us.

It is interesting that CIA economist Mr. Jim Rickards stated back in 2014 that there are about seven hundred and ten trillion dollars in the world's Derivatives market.

He is worried about a one hundred trillion dollar meltdown........ another alternative would be diverting derivatives into something win - win - win - win - win....... such as large scale desalination of ocean water!

This interview was done five years ago... but is highly informative...

An opinion piece in Town Hall? LOL That person doesn't even know what socialism is.

He gave that away in the first paragraph. This sort operated on the idea that if you tell a big lie and repeat it often enough that people will come to believe it. Perhaps even he might actually come to believe it.

Lets see what God has to say about rising sea levels (SE)

Proverbs 8:29 "[Wisdom] was there when He [God] set the limits of the seas, so they would not spread beyond their boundaries and when He marked off the earth’s foundations." Hmm God set the limits of the seas? Nah, scientists will prove that the seas are rising and in 2031 and you will see AOC was right and not God.

Job 38:11 "And I [God] placed boundaries on it And set a bolt and doors, And I said, 'Thus far you shall come, but no farther; And here shall your proud waves stop." Thus far but no farther? Just wait, you'll see that God may be good at godding but not at climate change.

Psa 104:9 "You [God] set a boundary that they [the seas] may not pass over, So that they will not return to cover the earth." Just wait.

Jer 5:22b "For I [God] have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea, An eternal decree, so it cannot cross over it. Though the waves toss, yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar, yet they cannot cross over it." Eternal decree? Cannot cross over it? Sheesh who does He think He is creator or something?

Predictions made on the first Earth Day in 1970 by well regarded scientists of that time:

"Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind." — Harvard biologist George Wald

"Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years." — Stanford University biologist Paul Ehrlich

"Most of the people who are going to die in the greatest cataclysm in the history of man have already been born… [By 1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s." — Paul Ehrlich

"Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions…. By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine." — North Texas State University professor Peter Gunter

"In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution… by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half."Life magazine

"By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate… that there won't be any more crude oil. You'll drive up to the pump and say, ‘Fill 'er up, buddy,' and he'll say, ‘I am very sorry, there isn't any.'" — Ecologist Kenneth Watt

"The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age." — Kenneth Watt

Lets see what God has to say about rising sea levels instead of those God hating "scientists" that need "climate change" so they can continue driving their expensive sedans and live in their multi million dollar mansions.
When a post opens with serious misunderstandings (let's not call them lies) the remainder of the post is best ignored.

Still, it's always good to know who the enemy is, so thank your for that insight.

Proverbs 18:13 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. The facts are God's word is 100% reliable unlike liberal lying God hating scientists with an agenda.
I adore facts, your distorted illusions, not so much. We share the planet and your attitude is messing it up. Unforgivable. I'll give you the last word. You are now invisible.

So do you then set the example and live in a cave and eat bats?
Use no plastic or gasoline or electricity.
Wear no clothing with synthetic yarns?
Wear no clothing at all, since each step of maufacture uses energy derived from 'fossil fuels'.
Eat only what sprouts in your yard, cause farmers use copius amounts of diesel and gas and fertilizers.
Refuse to go into concrete buildings since concrete manufacturer creates hugely vast quantities of co2 and energy burned to make it.
Refuse to travel anywhere except by walking, or maybe riding horses.
Definitely no flying, driving, boating, shipping.
Refuse to buy anything made overseas as the ships burn diesel fossil fuels
I could go on and on.
Or you could reduce the carbon dioxide emissions by switching to less polluting sources of energy and, even more importantly, stop the destruction of the rain forests and instead plant more trees. Trees and other plants are nature’s atmospheric clean up crews.

Overall, we must change the paradigm of fuel usage, especially in the US, where the use of the most energy inefficient forms of transportation are greatly encouraged.

I know quite a few scientists. None seem to hate G-d. In fact, I talk to them after services at my house of worship.

As far as the predictions made in the 1970s, science advanced quite a bit since then. Of course, many of those predictions were based n what I’d now obsolete science, and, even at that time many scientists disagree with them. Today, however, deserts are expanding and crops are failing because of changes in the wind and temperatures.

By the way, Saudi Arabia is starting to build an economy that is not based on oil. That’s because they are able to pump out less oil every year.

This is so close to Poe territory I have a hard time knowing whether to take it seriously. Let's put this person to the test and see if they have any scientific acumen.

TSI is down as are sunspots, while atmospheric CO2 has risen from 320 ppm to 410ppm over the last 50 years. We're not in upswing of a Milankovitch cycle, the sun is moribund during the last 3 solar cycles, it's not cosmic rays or unicorn farts. What is your explanation for the warmest years on record being all since 1998 with 8 of the 10 warmest years occurring in the last 10 years?

I was skeptical of global warming for a while but it's hard to argue with melting ice caps. Statistics can be excellent pridictures of future trends, or they can contrived. I don't think the results of global warming are going to be apocalyptic but it probably effect the weather significanly.

The article in the op pointed out this melting is losing fresh water to the sea. That's disappointing to hear but hardly earthshaking. The reports of major desalination in Israel is cool, you could be a billionaire if you could bring affordable desalination to the Middle East.

Seen a video by one of the original Greenpeace founders who argued, global warming will open up farmland, bow covered in ice and snow and atarved for CO2.

I don't really know but I suapect the predicted effects are exaggerated, fuess we will see.

exaggerated? Ten thousand people dying in a heat wave in Europe. That’s already happened. California having devastating forest fires . That’s already happened. Hurricanes destroying a major city . That’s already happened. Hundred year storms happening every 5 years . Low lying island nations being rendered uninhabitable . We’re getting there. Ask Vanuatu! The problem is this is going to happen more and more and it’s directly due to the higher temperatures. If that next Antarctic ice shelf collapses it’s going to cause more problems with sea level rise.

I agree with everything your saying there. I just never got the sea level rise issued. I've always been an environmentalist of some kind, Deforestation and global warming have always worried me.

There was a moment when my unit responded to Katrina. I saw the surge level map, it was double previous record highs.I'm not entirely sure I get it but that was enlightening.

Biologists were the first non climate scientists to jump on the global warming bandwagon. Plants can become less nutritious because the higher CO 2 levels cause the plant to produce more carbohydrates rather than proteins . The lower protein levels make them more vulnerable to predation and diseases. Animals and people ( other animals ) are showing signs of kidney disease around the equator due to the high heat and humidity .strenuous activity in high temperatures and high humidity is a bad idea. disease organisms (eucaryotic multicellular parasites, fungal , viral and bacterial) are moving out of their traditional areas because of the warmer weather . Species are moving out of their traditional areas in to areas that they weren’t able to survive previously. Some of those become invasive . others just become interesting ( crepe myrtles in New York for example. The change has been extremely rapid when I was a kid crepe myrtles. couldn’t reliably survive the winters in New York. Now they are common place )

personally what tipped me off to global warming was the USDA agricultural map that commonly shows up on the back of seed packets . Anyone who’s a gardener is familiar with it. New York City has gone from zone 5 to zone 7 over the last 50 years .

Here are a couple of quotations on how the addition of H2O to Antarctica has been saving us so far......... that surprised me because this part of the formula gets so little attention.

"At a symposium of the Union of Geodesy and geophysics, Dr. Pyyotor Shoumsky reported that the south polar ice cap was growing at a minimum rate of 293 cubic miles of ice annually. To put that number in perspective, Lake Erie contains only 109 cubic miles of water. Thus, a volume of ice forms on top of the existing ice at Antarctica each year which is almost three times the volume of water in Lake Erie!" (Expanded Discussion of The HAB Theory, Gershom Gale, Expanded Discussion on the HAB Theory.)

"Let us consider Antarctica for a moment.
We have already seen that it is big. It has a land area of 5.5
million square miles, and is presently covered by something in excess of seven million cubic miles of ice weighing an estimated 19 quadrillion tons (19 followed by 15 zeros). What worries the theorists of earth-crust displacement is that this vast ice-cap is remorselessly increasing in size and weight:'at the rate of 293 cubic miles of ice each year--almost as much as if Lake Ontario were frozen solidly annually and added to it." (Graham Hancock, Fingerprints of the Gods, page 480)

And more recently:

NASA Study: Mass Gains of Antarctic Ice Sheet Greater than Losses

"According to the new analysis of satellite data, the Antarctic ice sheet showed a net gain of 112 billion tons of ice a year from 1992 to 2001. That net gain slowed to 82 billion tons of ice per year between 2003 and 2008."

Even more recently, Antarctic Ice Sheet is Melting:

"The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is currently contributing approximately 25 percent of global melting land-based ice each year, and recent satellite-based studies have shown that this amount has increased in recent decades. This figure is equivalent to about 37 cubic miles or a cube of over three miles on each side."

The W.A.I.S. seems to be more likely even than the land based Greenland Ice Sheet to raise ocean levels rapidly due to it being below sea level.

New research shows that Antarctica’s largest floating ice shelf is highly sensitive to warming of the ocean
August 14, 2019 4.01pm EDT
Scientists have long been concerned about the potential collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and its contribution to global sea level rise. Much of West Antarctica’s ice lies below sea level, and warming ocean temperatures may lead to runaway ice sheet retreat.

This process, called marine ice sheet instability, has already been observed along parts of the Amundsen Sea region, where warming of the ocean has led to melting underneath the floating ice shelves that fringe the continent. As these ice shelves thin, the ice grounded on land flows more rapidly into the ocean and raises the sea level.

Although the Amundsen Sea region has shown the most rapid changes to date, more ice actually drains from West Antarctica via the Ross Ice Shelf than any other area. How this ice sheet responds to climate change in the Ross Sea region is therefore a key factor in Antarctica’s contribution to global sea level rise in the future.

Imagine what could happen if it was hit by a tsunami?
