How much faith is needed to move mountains? Is it necessary to “increase” our faith to do so?

As far as the end result goes, faith is faith no matter how much or how little you have. In that regard, to say that one person has less faith than another is like saying that one woman is less pregnant than another. That is, just as a woman is either pregnant or she isn’t, a person either has faith or the don’t. The true variance lies in the degree you can exclude the doubts of your faith. It’s like pure gold being pure gold whether it is a nugget or a boulder, but the true variance is the degree to which you remove the rocks and minerals that have clung to it when you brought it up.

So faith has no measure. If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you have faith. Luke 17:5-6 says, “The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ And the Lord said, ‘If you had faith like fa grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.’”

Pure faith in whatever degree will uproot mulberry trees and move mountains. The catch is, your faith must be pure. If you have any degree of doubt, even to have doubt as small as a grain of mustard seed, it will hinder whatever faith you have. Jesus in Matthew 21:21 says, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.” In actuality, as nobody but Jesus is perfect, everyone has some degree of doubt to go along with their faith. If that weren’t the case, then you might walk along a busy street and see mountains and mulberry bushes flying by overhead, on their way to the sea!

But as we walk in the midst of earthly evils, the temptations arising thereof will cause us to have doubts about our faith in at least one time or another. That does not mean we should not have faith in the Lord. The Lord recognizes our striving to have faith in Him, so He will respond at least to requests through prayer.

To put it in perspective, because nobody’s faith is pure, it is unlikely that if you ask God to move a mulberry bush or a mountain to the sea, you will see them going there without you doing anything. But if you at least strive to have faith in God and you ask him to HELP you uproot a mulberry bush and bring it to the sea, God will do so if He finds your request to be a good one. And, if God finds it good that you ask him to HELP you move a mountain to the sea, He will do so…although you can only move a mountain piece by piece, and it may take many years before that is accomplished. Think of Mount Everest.

How is faith and prayer related? Well, if you have faith in Him, God will surely answer your prayers. Your prayers let God know that you need His help, or you need Him to help you do things. You may pray that God helps an ailing loved one, or that He helps you put your best foot forward in a job interview, or that He helps you study to get good grades in school. Sometimes the results of your prayers may not be what you’ve expected, but in the long run and in the whole scheme of things, whatever the results are is what God deems to be good.

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit of God. I believe that is required to move mountains. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

These are my thoughts on faith:

It is important that we know the type of faith that we must have that will save us and bring us to heaven. There is only one type of faith that will accomplish it: Justifying Faith. This is defined in the faith that puts the whole trust in the person of Christ alone. He is the only foundation for justifying faith.

Justifying faith attaches itself to the Lord’s salvation promises in the written Word. But holding on to those promises must point to the Person who made them, because there is no other foundation for justifying faith than Christ Himself (1 Corinthians 3:11).

But there are other types of faith that will keep a sinner on the road to hell:

· Faith in one’s own performance in holiness and righteousness. This is the attempt to be justified by keeping the law. If a person relies on his ability to keep the law to be justified, he has to keep the whole law from childhood without one single fault. The reality is that no one has ever been able to accomplish it; therefore all those who rely on the law for salvation are subject to the penalty for failing to keep it.

· Faith in Bible knowledge. A person may know the whole Bible from cover to cover, but the demons also know it and they will never be saved. It is true that faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17), but the faith is not in the written word itself but in the person of Christ to whom the word is directed.

· Faith in a mental assent that God exists, that Jesus Christ was an historical figure who died on the cross and rose from the dead. The demons also know this and tremble, because they know that being aware of this is not going to save them.

· Faith in sensory experiences and manifestations. This is a form of unbelief, because Christians walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). It consists of a concentration on self and the flesh. Paul said that there was nothing good in him, that is in his flesh (Romans 7:18). If people are seeking sensory experiences and manifestations there is always a demon to give them one.

· Faith in miracles. Judas was one of the seventy sent out to heal the sick and cast out demons. He was also one of the twelve who went out the second time. He performed the same miracles that Jesus did, and yet he was exposed as a thief and a hypocrite. We have plenty of evidence in these days that false teachers and prophets are able to perform miracles, but are as far away from Christ as any unconverted sinner.

· Faith in a church denomination. The visible church is just the scaffolding to contain the true church which is made up of those who are genuinely converted to Christ. There are those who believe that by being associated with a particular church they will get to heaven. This is a deception. The role of the church is to direct our faith to the person of Christ.

· Faith in a particular pastor, teacher, or man of God. This is also a misplaced faith. It is putting one’s faith in a creature rather than the creator. Paul said, “After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News” (1 Corinthians 3:5). It is tragic that the faith of many believers are shipwrecked because a loved and respected pastor falls from grace. This is because they have had more faith in that pastor than in Christ Himself.

· Faith in the prophetic. The purpose of the prophetic is to point us to the person of Christ. Just because a prophecy or word of knowledge is given, we must not take it at face value before carefully examining it to ensure that it is in harmony with the Scriptures and presents Christ as the sole foundation for faith.

All this is not to say that we are not concerned about our growth in grace and sanctification, or that we diminish our love for God’s Word. It is important that we retain sound doctrine concerning the character and nature of God, the death and resurrection of Christ, and that we find a good church where there is supportive fellowship and sound preaching of the Word. It is also good to believe in the miracle-working power of God, and that having a sense of God’s presence and blessing as a bonus to faith. Also, the prophetic word can be a real blessing to a soul when the word is given in the right place, at the right time. Also it is good to have great respect and love for a faithful man of God who is a true shepherd and who faithfully preaches the Word of God. But all these are the scaffolding that supports our faith in the person of Christ and are valuable for our continued development in sanctification.

But justifying faith is total trust in the person of Christ alone, even if we find ourselves in a situation where none of these other blessings are available to us and we are left with just us and Christ. Having full trust in Christ is salvation for us because He is the only One who has the words of eternal life.

>2 Timothy 3:16 says that all Scripture is breathed out by god for teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness. If we can't get guidance from the Bible, how can we earn our place in heaven?

God may give out his Grace for free to certain people, but you don't know if you are one of the lucky ones. The more you can learn from the Bible, the more you can know where you stand with the Lord. Faith in the Lord puts you in good standing.

Just having Bible knowledge alone as such will not save anyone. The devil and his demos know the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and they believe every word of it. This is what makes them tremble with fear because they know and believe that without faith it is impossible to please God, and it is possible to intellectually know and believe every word of the Bible yet not have the faith to attach to any of the salvation promises of God. This is because Justifying faith is a work of the Holy Spirit and it is given only to humans who seek the Lord in order to receive saving faith to attach to a salvation promise.

There will be many Bible scholars in theologians in hell who even wrote commentaries, but they did not attach personal faith to any of the promises they read in the Bible.

Therefore if anyone thinks that they are saved because they know and believe the Bible, they had better think again, because it comes short of the true justifying faith that is attached to the Jesus of the Bible.

Furthermore, Judas knew and believed Bible and that Jesus was the true Messiah, but in the end he was exposed as a thief and a hypocrite, betrayed the Lord and came to a sticky end. So his knowledge of the Bible and of Jesus being the true Messiah did not give him and new heart and save him.
