You have questions, my film has answers, yes there are many morals actually, it is really about how human beings love and forgiveness :) no joke, it’s just in the guise of a boundary pushing horror film :)

It sounds interesting...and I have been wanting to watch the new Tarantino movie. The blatant depiction of Jesus and the devil doesn't sit well with me though...like I hate South Park and the other cartoons, and such, that treat the Bible lightly.

Good day friendly Christians!

My name is Naz Red, I am a filmmaker and I think I am a pretty good guy! I recently made a film called "Debbie and The Devil" in which I play Satan, and it is a very fun, funny, silly scary movie. Unfortunately, I have been informed by Christian friends that I am going to hell for making this film. Our website is debbieandthedevil.com and I think it is a fun movie for teens to enjoy, but every Christian person I know says I will go to hell for this movie because they say it is blasphemous! I'm like, maybe, but it's a cool movie. I feel there is an interesting debate here in terms of cinema and Christianity and think it would make for a thought provoking conversation for my podcast and so I am inviting any and all Christians to come onto my show and talk it out, I want to know why Christians think I am going to hell for making a silly movie. True, there are things in the film that are racy and violent and yes I guess blasphemous but I don't know really. We portray Jesus as a black samurai and I think that's cool, not blasphemous, and I think maybe my Christian friends think it is blasphemous to have the devil be a cool guy and there is a scene where the Devil and Jesus are telling yo momma jokes to one another which is just silly. At any rate, I would love to hear what other Christians think and if you are feeling up to having a recorded debate over the phone, I would love that! We can exchange information and we can set a day and record a healthy talk, I love my movie because it is cool but I guess there are parts of it that are offensive but my intentions are pure: I just want to entertain the youth! Thank you all and have a wonderful day :)
Welcome to CF! I have to say, I always admire non-christians who genuinely want to know Christians thoughts on things, because I know it can sometimes be intimidating for non-christinlans.

I have a lot to say about this (as a 20 year old girl in college). Before I talk about my thoughts, let me say that one thing I ask non-Christians before getting into religion or what what I believe is asking them how they would explain Christianity. This helps me know where the person is at and in what ways are they disconnected from Christians or Christianity. So what would you describe Christianity as being all about?

So, there was this guy. Great guy. And he said, "hey man, love each other. And you know what? Love your enemy too, just love man, and be forgiving, and don't judge people because who are you or him or her to judge another human being?" (the Mary Magdalene story comes to mind) and that's how I see the beginnings of Christianity. But if you were to ask me how I would put that story of that man into some sort of daily practice, I would say it all boils down to being chill with your fellow man (or woman, excuse the sexist language) and you know, doing the right thing in whatever given circumstances, what ever that may be. :) I think :)

Thanks for replying! I'm not surprised by your thoughts on what Christianity is; many others say the same thing. It is the common impression many non-Christians have of Christianity, which is very unfortunate because it is very shallow understanding of the rich depths of the Christian tradition. It is an understanding that reduces Christianity to a set of rules and attitudes; in actuality, this understanding is part of the problem of the human condition that Jesus came to resolve in a great battle of confronting evil at its source and destroying it.

This is going to be a long post, but if you really want to know why Christians think what they do, it is imperative that you understand.

The story of Christianity did not start at Jesus' sayings; it actually started much, much earlier. It is connected to Judaism, which has been in existence for around 6,000 years. The story of Christianity as told by the Bible depicts very important truths about the world and human beings, so it is very important to understand when you're making movies relating to the Christian story or if you want to be able to understand your Christian friends' worldview.

In the Bible, we are told that in the beginning God made mankind in His image. What does that mean? It means that we were created to be like God; He endowed us responsibility to care for the earth, for each other, and to rule the earth as partners with God, which means being in a close relationship with Him. This is actual a very radical concept because, in the ancient world, it was king or pharoahs or chiefs that were considered to be like their gods. The commoners were unworthy to know the gods. But this is not what God wanted; He designed all people, the poor, the wealthy, the sick, the healthy, male, and female, everyone to be like Him. This placed a large responsibility on humans to be good.

But the first humans failed. In the end, a wicked spiritual being tempted and deceived them to desire to be their own gods and decide for themselves what good and evil were. They gave into the temptation and it destroyed everything. It destroyed the trust between men and women, humans and creation, and ultimately the trust between human beings and God. And ever since then, all humans, including you and me, have been under the same curse of doing what is right in our own eyes, to deny what is good and instead choose selfishness. We gave ourselves over to death. We lie, we lust, we envy others, we hate others, we murder in our hearts, we betray those that love us, we gluttonously take and take more than we need, and we mock the One who made us. The results are all the worst most evil things we see in the world today.

Most people consider themselves good people, and you probably do too. In reality, we are deceiving ourselves; we regularly engage in selfish and greedy behavior, whether in our mind or in action. Really, think about it, all those times where the most wicked or evil thought has popped into your head. You are really, truly capable of some evil things, because you are human, and being human means being selfish. It is uncomfortable to think about, but if you were a German who lived during the 1930s, you most likely would have been a Nazi. You wouldn't have tried to stop the holocaust or atrocities, because most Germans didn't. The only difference between you and a murderer is a bad decision.

This is why the Bible says:
“There is no one righteous, not even one;
11there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
12All have turned away,
they have together become worthless;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.” b
13“Their throats are open graves;
their tongues practice deceit.” c
“The poison of vipers is on their lips.” d
14“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” e
15“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16ruin and misery mark their ways,
17and the way of peace they do not know.” f
18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” g

Even Jesus, who you consider to be righteous because He would not judge, accuses us: "You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Human evil is a real problem. In the Bible, it is often called "sin", and is depicted as being like a wild animal, seeking to devour people. And in the Bible, we are told that satan (who is the spiritual being that tempted the two original humans at the beginning of the Bible) is one of the sources of evil, and the most wicked being to have existed. He was originally an angel, one of the highest angels, and served God, but he was cast out because he sought to decide what was good and what was evil for himself. And so he hates God, but he knows he can't hurt Him because God is so powerful. So he hurts the next best thing: humans, who are made in God's image. Satan hates everything that is good, beautiful, or sacred, and that includes human life. Every evil thing you read on the news is, in part, because of him. One of the worst things I read recently was a father who shot his 3-year-old daughter to death when she came running up excitedly to greet him when he got back from work; that deed, and many others, are because of satan. Christians do not consider him fictional. Unfortunately he is very real and very active.

All of these terrible things, God wants to get rid of. But there's a problem; if He wants to get rid of evil, He has to get rid of us. Sin, and everything it resides in, must be destroyed. Sin resides in us, which means we must be destroyed in order for it to go away. God does not want that to happen, as the Bible tells us: "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

God's solution is this: He tells us in the Old Testament that He will send a Messiah (that means the Anointed One, which means one who is chosen for a kingly purpose for God) who will destroy satan and all evil. The prophecies are all over the old testament, promising a divine messiah who will restore humanity to God through a heroic sacrifice and resurrection; we will not be destroyed, but instead, the evil alone in us will be destroyed, and we will have eternal life.

When Jesus comes, He teaches about God and how to live according to the Truth, which means denying yourself and carrying your cross, just like Jesus does. Christ goes through persecution at the hands of his own people, and is ultimately imprisoned, tortured, and nailed to a cross where he hangs for 6 hours until His death. But as He told His followers, He would rise again to life. In three days, women go to the tomb of Christ and find the stone over the tomb rolled away, and He appears to His followers alive. In His death, he destroyed death, and He descended to the gates of hell to free the souls who had been there before His sacrifice. All of evil was placed on his shoulders, none of which He was guilty because He was and is God, and died with Him. But He returned to life on the third day, showing that death would not prevail and that good could win, and God was victorious. In the same way, those who follow Him die to their sins just as Jesus died, and they continue to live eternally like Christ.

Before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He promised His followers that He would send someone to help them; this is the Holy Spirit. His function is to guide those who believe so they live according to Christ's way. The Holy Spirit is God Himself, and at our baptism He resides within us, restoring our direct relationship with God, and helping us to know the right ways to live and sanctifies us throughout our lives.

But it doesn't end here; at the end time, Christ will return for the Church (all Christian believers whose relationship with God has been restored) to take them to heaven. After that, all of creation will be restored. We are told that a new Heaven and a new Earth will be created, and we will be resurrected in our bodies like Christ was, and God will be fully reunited with humanity and all of creation. This is what it will be like:“Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ b or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away....The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb [Jesus] is its lamp.24The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life."

This is the worldview all Christians partake in. We take it very, very seriously, as seriously as Muslims or Hindus or Buddhists take their religions. Immoral things or mocking things that are combined with Christ are seen as being a horrendous desecration of God Himself, which is why some may view your movie as blasphemous. Gore and sexual promiscuity being depicted for their own sakes, in combination with satan or other demonic entities, is considered to be spiritually dangerous to engage with in a very real way. We do not consider these things to be trifled with, because there may be very real consequences as a result, because all of these things contribute to the overall evil and darkness of the world, which we are expected to avoid.

In the end, when reading about your movie, I wonder if you would make similar movie with Mohammed. If you consider that idea too risky, maybe you should question why you think it's ok to do the same thing with the Christian religion. It seems to me that Christianity is the least respected religion; no one cares about offending Christians. It makes me sad when people think that it's fine to mock Christianity or insult it but not something like Judaism or Islam; meanwhile, thousands of my brothers and sisters are being killed for their faith each year, or being persecuted in other ways. 80% of people who are persecuted for their faith are Christians.

I personally don't care if you release this movie, because I won't see it. It isn't a threat to my Christian belief, and God can't be brought down by it because He's God. But I can guarantee you that evil entities will rejoice because of it, even if you don't believe in them.

Sorry for this being so long.

You shot a film. That alone impresses me. I've got a channel on YouTube which has literally hundreds--maybe tens--of views. I cut one promotional video which my own church refused to air in the service, for quality reasons (they ended up letting us just make an announcement live in church instead). All the challenges with lighting and the time spent mixing video have earned me a respect for what you do.

This feels like a shameless plug just to get more hits on your movie. If your interested in salvation then making a movie has nothing to do with it, seek Jesus and ask your questions to him.

I saw the trailer. I'm sort of a horror buff, but I ask the question to you as much as myself: is there any hope or redemption in it, or is it just pure defilement?

I've seen lots of horror, and those that have no redeeming or philosophical value I don't care to see again. So if it has only defilements and no good in it, I'm not interested. My opinion. It might depend on how you define "good."

Have you consulted God and your pastor prior to releasing this film?

During the course of releasing this film, have you asked God if the content is pleasing to Him, and if it is His will for you to continue promoting it?

You don't need to answer these questions to me. But I think it's helpful for self-reflection.

You only go to hell for rejecting God. So your friends are confused.
If they think you are going to hell then they need to form a better
response to you.

The reality would be that you are going to hell SO you made this movie.
And so their response is wrong. They should be concerned, not offended.

Is there at least a moral to the story?
From what I saw, the moral is that online advice is bad.
Because she checks her phone, which tells her to beat another girl to death.
So the lesson is, social media will mess you up....for life.

Okay. Compared to who? God's standard isn't yours, I bet. And it's His standard that matters.

I recently made a film called "Debbie and The Devil" in which I play Satan, and it is a very fun, funny, silly scary movie.

So, are you thinking that because your movie is funny that God gives it a pass? Does humor justify evil? I don't think God thinks that.

Unfortunately, I have been informed by Christian friends that I am going to hell for making this film.

Well, you'll end up in hell for any sin you've committed, if you haven't trusted in Christ as your Saviour and submitted yourself to him as your Lord.

Our website is debbieandthedevil.com and I think it is a fun movie for teens to enjoy

Okay. But is it what you think that makes your movie okay? I know God would not be pleased by what you have done - however funny and entertaining you think the movie is.

I feel there is an interesting debate here in terms of cinema and Christianity and think it would make for a thought provoking conversation for my podcast and so I am inviting any and all Christians to come onto my show and talk it out, I want to know why Christians think I am going to hell for making a silly movie.

All you have to do is read the Bible. It's pretty evident when you do that the sort of movie you've made is out-of-bounds as far as God is concerned. On what basis do you think your movie is going to get God's approval?

True, there are things in the film that are racy and violent and yes I guess blasphemous but I don't know really.

As far as God is concerned, this doesn't make what you've done less wrong. Your being uncertain as to the morality of your movie doesn't mean God will turn a blind eye to its wrongness. God promises us that all of our sin in the end results in death of some kind. For those who haven't trusted in Christ as Saviour and Lord that death is the "second death" in hell. Ignorance is no safeguard against this end.

We portray Jesus as a black samurai and I think that's cool, not blasphemous

Well, it is blasphemous, regardless of how cool you think it is. If you had a clear, full picture of who Jesus is, the thought of making him into a black samurai would never occur to you. Doing so would be to diminish Jesus, to make him small, and human, and ugly, just like the rest of us. But Jesus isn't like us. Yes, he was a man, but he was also - and more importantly - God. No other human was ever as Jesus was (and is). Not even anywhere close. And this is why representing him as a samurai of any color is wrong.

I love my movie because it is cool but I guess there are parts of it that are offensive but my intentions are pure

Your "pure intentions" don't justify what you've done, in God's eyes. People do all sorts of things from pure intentions that they ought never to have done.

I just want to entertain the youth!

Really? Youth these days are spoiled for choice when it comes to entertainment. Movies, games, sports, 'net surfing, concerts, hobbies, books, comics, etc. The list goes on and on. Youth don't need more entertainment. What youth need is to be rightly related to their Creator, to live lives with transcendent meaning and value, and to invest in things that will last into eternity. Your movie offers none of these things.
