The Rich Young Man
Matt. 19:16-30
(See also Mark10:17-31 and Luke18:18-3

What must I do to get eternal life? That's what the man was asking Yeshua. Yeshua's reply is, "Keep the commandments".

The man asks him, "Which ones?"

Yeshua responds, "Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as you love yourself". Lev 19:18.

The man tells Yeshua, "I've kept all these since my youth. What do I still lack?"

Why would he think he lacked something? Apparently, there was something going on in this man's heart that signaled to him that even though he was doing the right things, as instructed and promised by God (Lev 18:5), he knew that something was missing but he didn't know what.

Yeshua's response is, "If you wish to be perfect sell everything, give it to the poor, and come join me."

The partial list from the 10 Commandments that Yeshua gave was the part that was relational to others. The other half is relational to God. The man was still dependant on his riches of money and property. Apparently, he could not see himself not having these things, so he walked away in sadness.

Yeshua tells his disciples, "it is hard for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of heaven. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into the Kingdom." Why? I think it's because the rich have no need (from their point of view anyway) to depend on God for anything. They also have a difficult time paring down their own needs to the basics and living off just what is necessary and giving the rest to others who truely need it.

Yeshua does not say it's a sin to be rich. Nor does he say that a rich man "can't" get into the kingdom, just that it is difficult because of their dependency on their own abilities to meet their own needs. Riches in the scriptures is a sign of God's blessing. The point of being blessed though is not for hording but for giving out to those in need. The man who came to Yeshua had an issue with giving.

"It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom" I've heard the story of an ancient gate in Jerusalem that supposedly was called the "Eye of The Needle" and about camels having to bow low to get through but I can find no proof of such a gate. According to, "The Jewish Annotated New Testament", it never existed. There is also an old Talmudic parallel using an elephant. "It's easier for an Elephant tp go through the eye of a needle."

Even the poor though can be dependent on riches. They don't have riches but their constantly thinking, "how can I get this or that?" or maybe, "I can get money from so n' so, then I'll be ok." It's human to be concerened about our needs being met but God being good, is the only One who can meet them. Physically, financially, and spiritually. We are to depend totally on Him. That does not mean that we sit back and do nothing but come to the understanding that our getting is still from God.

The Workers in the Vineyard
Matt 20:1-16

At the end of the previous portion we see Yeshua talking about the reward for those who leave everything to follow him. It's not saying that we are to abandon our responsibilities, such as our children, the care of elderly parents, or a spouse. That is frowned upon pretty heavily by God. However, we are to meet our responsibilities, then, and only then move on to doing what He's called you to do. An example would be when Yeshua, on the cross, made sure his mother was cared for before he, as the oldest and the one responsible for her care left. We do not abandon our families to do "the Lords work" as many say and in doing so actually undo the Lord's testimony in their life.

Anyway, verse 30 of chapter 19 says, "And many first will be last and last will be first". He gives this answer to Peters question, "We've given all Lord, what will we get for it?"

The story goes that an owner of a vineyard needs workers to bring in the harvest of his vineyard so he goes to the marketplace where day-workers hang out looking for any work they can get for the day. The owners first visit is early in the morning and he hires several with the agreed payment of a denarius. It met the needs for the day.

Then the owner went out again a few hours later and hired some more men that he found at the marketplace. His payment promise, "What is right". Then at the sixth and ninth hour he promised them the same, "what is right". Then at the 11th hour, just an hour of the workday left, he got more workers but he made no particular agreement of payment with them. He just told them to go. At that time of day they probably figured "some money was better than none at all".

When payment time came all the workers were lined up according to who came last and worked only an hour on up to those who had worked all day. Payment to those who came last was a denarius. So the workers who had been there all day got excited. They were saying, "Wow, if he paid them a full denarius for working only an hour, what are we about to get paid"? They were adding up in their heads all the things they were going to get to buy.

But then the all day workers started receiving their pay of "a denarius". Their grumblings were quite vocal, "that's not fair, we worked all day in the fields and got the same pay as those who worked only an hour"?

The owner asks, "What are you grumbling about? Did I not pay you what we had agreed upon? Take your money and go". He continues, "What is it to you what I do with my money. Am I not permitted to do with my money whatever I please"?

Then the owner suggests that their grumblings are coming from and evil eye. An evil eye is referencing jealousy and envy and those emotions are based on selfishness. The owner was a "good" man and being good, he could not give less than the denarius because that would mean that those workers and their families went hungry that day. Less than a denarious would not meet the daily need for the family waiting at home.

The workers who had worked all day should have been happy and amazed that the owner would be so generous so as to not send the hour workers away without their needs being met for the day. But instead of rejoicing at the goodness of the owner toward their co-workers they became bitter.

At the beginning of this parable, Yeshua said, "The Kingdom of Heaven is like the master of a household". When we come to the Lord, whether it's as a child or on our deathbed, we all come in on the same basis and receive the same eternal life. None of us deserve His grace and mercy but He gives it to us anyway.

Now there will be rewards according to our faithfullness and heart intents. (See 1 Cor 4:5, and Rev 22:12). Here though in this parable, Yeshua is talking about the equality of salvation. All believers will receive the "crown of life" (James 1:12, Rev 2:10), the "crown of righteousness" (2 Tim 4:8), and the "crown of glory" (1 Pet 5:4) Eternal life is a gracious gift. But God is just and full of mercy and grace.

The believer who is envious of other believers for whatever reason is unspiritual and foolish. As said before, none of us deserve His mercy but because He is good He offers it to us anyway. We are to rejoice with the angels when someone comes to the Lord, no matter what the circumstances were that they came by nor whether they lived a life of "eat, drink, and be merry" and came to Him on their deathbed. Jealousy and envy is not a sign of a believer in Yeshua. Not to fret though, if you see those things springing up in you repent, then repent again when it shows it's ugly head again. God is faithful and will walk you through until that "evil eye" is no longer manefesting.

A Third Time Yeshua Foretells His Death and Resurrection
Matt20:17-19
(See also Mark10:32-34 and Luke18:31-34)

My first question when reading this is, "Why is Yeshua talking in 3rd person"? Maybe he's done it before, but I don't remember noticing it before? What are your thoughts?

"Hand him over to the Gentiles" was a statement that was particularly alarming." The Roman rulers were not known for mercy and this was a frightening thought to them.

The Request of Jacob (AKA James) and John
Matt20:20-28
(See also Mark10:95-45)

The mother of James and John had a lot of chutzpah:

  • Chutzpah is the quality of audacity, for good or for bad. The Yiddish word derives from the Hebrew word ', meaning "insolence", "cheek" or "audacity" ~Wikipedia~ (I think way Wikipedia spelled it out a bit more thoroughly than the dictionary).
She had the nerve to approach Yeshua and tell him to promise her that her two sons would be sitting next to him in the Kingdom
shocked-eyes-smiley-emoticon.gif
, positions of honor. It's interesting to note that during his crucifiction, the ones on his left and right were thieves.

He was pretty straight forward with her in his answer, "You have no idea what you're asking of me".

He then looks at James and John and says, "Are you able to drink of the cup I'm about to drink from". Foolishly enough they quickly answered, "Yes". Then Yeshua told them they would indeed drink from the same cup as he but the position of sitting on his right and left was not his to give, but his Fathers.

When the other disciples heard what James and John were were asking of Yeshua (they were probably whispering, trying to keep it a secret) they became indignant. "How dare those two think they can be in a place of honor in the Kingdom, and they get their mom to do the requesting for them". As if coming from their mother is a better thing.

Yeshua then said, "You're aware that the rulers of the nations are cruel and lord it over the people, but that is not how it will be with you. But for you, if you desire to be great then you must be servant to the others here. You must follow my example of serving and giving my life as a ransom for many."

Huh! Try that statement at a leadership conferance!

The Healing of The Two Blind Men
Matt 20:29-34
(See also Mark10:46-52, Luke18:35-43)

As Yeshua and his disciples were leaving Jerico, a crowd began to follow them.

TMatthew records there were two blind men sitting at the side of the road. Mark and Luke mention just one. The noiseof the crowd got their attention and they began calling out, "Lord, have mercy on us Son of David".They must have been quite loud because the crowd became upset. Perhaps they were trying to ehar what Yeshua was saying, it does not say but the crowed began telling the blind men to be quiet. This only made the blind men cry out louder.

Yeshua stopped in his tracks and called out to them to come to him. As they stood in front of him he asked, "What do you want me to do for you?". They replied, "Lord, let our eyes be opened".

Moved with compassion, Yeshua reached out and touched their eyes and theywere instantly healed and they began following him.

Yeshua always had mercy on those who came to him. Not once is it recorded that he ever turned away from healing anyone who came to him and asked.

Baruch Ha-Ba!
Blessed Is He Who Comes!
Matt21:1-27
(see also Mark11:1-11, Luke19:28-38, John12:12-19)

After healing the blind men, they continued their journey to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage. At that point Yeshua told two of his disciples (in Hebrew it's
talmidim) to go into the village where they would find a donkey with a colt and they were to bring both of them back to him. If anyone asked them what they were doing they were just to say, "The Master has need of them." Because of their unhesitating response, the owners of the donkey and colt were quite likely followers of Yeshua.

The disciples did what was requested and it took place just as Yeshua said. This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet Zechariah (Zech 9:9)

  • The prophet Zechariah was among the 50,000 or so Jews who returned in the first wave of Hebrews released from Babylonian captivity in 536 B.C. He wrote about five centuries before the birth of Jesus (520 B.C. – cf. Zech. 1:1). The prophet’s main emphasis was to rekindle spiritual fervor in Israel’s hearts after they had fallen into a state of listlessness.~The Triumphal Entry Of Jesus Into Jerusalem, Wayne Jackson~

The disciples brought the donkey and colt back and put their outer garmens on them and Yeshua selected the colt to ride on. No one had ever sat on it (Mark11:2 and Luke19:30) Note that there was no resistance from this colt who had never been ridden.

The day this took place was on the 1st day of the week (Sunday) See John12:1. A week before Passover would begin on Friday at Sundown. (Jewish days begin at Sundown to Sundown) That's also when Sabbath begins, at Sundown of tge 6th day of the week (what we call Friday night - Sundown Saturday) Many churches call this entry day Palm Sunday.

Crowds of people carpeted the road with their clothing, more than likely their tallits. Others used layers of palm leaves

Spreading garments before a dignatary was a symbal of submission. (2 Kings9:13) Palm branches were tokens of Victory. Jesus was surrounded by the crowds as he rode down the road toward Jerusalem. The people were shouting, "Hoshia-na to Ben-David!
Baruch ha-ba b’shem Adonai!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hoshia-na in the highest!”

When he finely entered the city the whole city was stired. Then Yeshua entered the temple and drove out all the money changeer. I've heard it said, "he was cleaning house for Passover" :) He was. The money changers were theirves in that they would overcharge for the sacrifices that the people had to bring, plus the animals were not likely as "clean" as they were supposed to be.

While he was in the temple the blind and the lame came to him and he healed them all.

Of course the rulers and Torah teachers got upset because there was so much commotion over him. They said, "Don't you hear what all these children are saying?"

Yeshua replied, "Yes! Haven't you heard, 'Out of the mouth of babes and nursing toddlers

You have prepared praise for yourself’?'"

He then left and went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there.

Faith Moves Mountains
Matt 21:18-22
(see also Mrk 11:12-24)

They spent the night in Bethany or thereabout, and on the way back to the city of Jerusalem, Yeshua became hungry. He sees a fig tree in the distance and walks to it.

A fig tree is generally 3 to 5 years old before it produces. At spring time, a tree has already begun producing fruit. The figs are not ripe enough to harvest until after the Passover season, however, when a tree is full of leaves it is signifying that the fig has begun to grow. At this point, there are just little knubs called taqsh on them which are growing from the previous years old branches and are edible and will help curb a person appetite until they can get something more substantial to eat.

When Yeshua arrived at the tree which by it's "leafiness" proclaimed there was taqsh on it, but the tree was void of any fruit at all, he cursed it. Basically all that leafiness said, "See all my leaves, I have fruit here for you to enjoy" but when Yeshua got to it, there was no fruit on it. Therefore, Yeshua cursed it.

This is what taqsh looks like:

iu

The previous day Yeshua had entered the temple expecting the religious leaders to be feeding the spiritually hungry who were there to celebrate Passover. The religious leaders were ordained to feed the good things of God to the people. The leaders presented themselves as early leaves, holding out the promise of fruit but they were fruitless. Instead of providing spiritual nourshment to the pilgrims they were sending them away hungry. They were taking advantage of the people.

Then Yeshua goes into a teaching about faith moving mountains and casting them into the sea.

Faith is defined by God in terms with our relationship with HIM, our trust and reliance on HIM, following HIS instructions despite what our religeous leaders may otherwise teach, (Deut 6 and Luke18:18-22). God is not interested in us actually hurling mountains into the ocean, however, He is interested (as shown by his example and teachings) in rooting out the false teachings of the world and presenting the Kingdom of God. (See Isaiah 61)

  • The metaphorical terms "mountains" and "seas" have to do with leaders and the spiritual abyss. As Yeshua points out in these chapters, the Pharisees were actually keeping people away from the Kingdom of God through their teachings (though the people were at fault as well for allowing them to do this). Yeshua is thus instructing His disciples that with faith, not only can the falsehood of the Pharisees be overcome (the mountain being tossed into the sea), but the Kingdom itself can be ushered in, (where "miracles" will be commonplace, i.e., "whatever you ask you will receive.") ~Yashanet~

Questions About Yeshua's Authority
Matt 21:23-27
(see also Mark11:27-33, Luke20:1-8)

Yeshua enters the temple again and he's teaching. Suddenly the
kohanim (Jewish priests and descendents of Aaron) and the elders of the people (the men who led in local decision making for their local area...it could acceptably vary from place to place) came to Yeshua and demanded to know who gave him the authority to do what he was doing. The Hebrew word for the word they used is s’mikhah.
  • S’mikhah is a Hebrew word which means authority, and it is given when a person lays their hands on the head of another. ~Think Hebrew~
So what they were demanding he tell them was, "who with authority laid hands on you and gave you the authority to do what you are doing?"

Yeshua's answer to them is, "Well, let me first ask you a question and if you answer it then I will answer your question". Yeshua's question was, "John's baptism, where was it from?" Paul wrote John's baptism was, "an immersion of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the One coming after him—that is, in Yeshua.”" (Acts19:4)

The kohanim and elders discussed amongst themselves how to answer because they knew that either answer would cause a problem. If they answered "heaven" they would be questioned as to why they did not do what John had said and if they answered, "man" they would be stoned because the people believed John to be a Prophet. They decided to give the safe answer and said, "we don't know".

Yeshua's answer back was, (paraphrased) "Well, since you won't answer my question then I won't tell you where I got my authority".

A Parable About Intentions and Actions
Matt 21:28-32

Now after Yeshua told the Chief Priests and Elders that he was not going to tell them where he got his authority to do the things he was doing he said, "Tell me what you think". Then he proceeded to tell them a story about a man with two sons and he asked one to do something, and the son said he would not, but then changed his mind and dit it. The other son was asked to do the same thing, said he would do it, but didn't. So which son had obeyed his father?

They answered, "The first son". He told them they were correct then applied the parable to them and they were the second son while the prostitutes and tax collectors were the first son and would be entering heaven ahead of them, the Chief Priests and Elders.

Regarding the titles,

To say the least, they were insulted.

The Chief Priests and Elders had committed to the call to work the field of God but had turned it into a "power job" of fame and fortune. Their job was to teach Torah and correctly instruct in following it. Instead they used it for their own purposes and benefits. They were unrepentant when John gave them the message, while the prostitutes and tax collectors were.

Parable of The Vineyard
Matt 21:33-45
(see also Mark12:1-12, Luke20:9-19)

Yeshua continues on with another parable. This one is a reworking of what Isaiah said in Is 5:1-2, 7.

There was a man (God) who planted a vineyard (the Jewish people), built a winepress, and a wall and leased it to some farmers (chief priests and Pharisees) to work the land. He then left to travel and while away sent his servants (the prophets) to the vineyard to collect on the harvest of his vineyard

The farmers however, killed the servents. So the owner figures they will treat his son with greater respect and he sends his son (Yeshua), and the farmers kill him too.

Yeshua asks, "What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do to those tenants when he returns? The Chief Priests and Elders answer, "He will bring those miserable men to a miserable end (They condemned themselves), and will lease the field to other tenants (followers of Yeshua both Jew and Gentile) who will give him His share of the fruit in it's season".

In response to their condemning of the bad tenants, Yeshua reminds them of the quote in (Ps 118:22-23)

  • The stone which the builders rejected,
this has become the chief cornerstone.
    This came from Adonai,
and it is marvelous in our eyes."
Then directly to them (the chief priests and elders), Yeshua says, "The Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to people who will produce it's fruit".

The chief priests and teachers then realized he was talking about them and they wanted to sieze him but they were afraid of the people because the people regarded him as a prophet.

Invitation to the Wedding Feast
Matt 22:1-14
(see also Luke14:15-24)

Yeshua tells another parable

  • Until late in the Middle Ages, marriage consisted of two ceremonies that were marked by celebrations at two separate times, with an interval between. First came the betrothal [erusin]; and later, the wedding [nissuin]. At the betrothal the woman was legally married, although she still remained in her father’s house. She could not belong to another man unless she was divorced from her betrothed. The wedding meant only that the betrothed woman, accompanied by a colorful procession, was brought from her father’s house to the house of her groom, and the legal tie with him was consummated.~Ancient Jewish Marriage, at My Jewish Learning~
In ancient Jewish customs, when the couple became ingaged, the invitations to the wedding were sent out, but there was no date yet because the groom had to go and prepare a home for his bride. When the groom had done everything (it could be months or years) needed, he then sent for his bride who was to be ready to grab her wedding dress and was taken away to the groom's house where there would be a great feast and the wedding ceremony.

When the servants were sent out to call the guests that had been invited (the Jews) they were met with disinterest. The servants were sent out again and told to shout out that "everything for the wedding is ready, the food is prepared. Come to the wedding!"

But the invited guests paid no attention, they were too busy with other things, and they even killed the servants (the prophets) coming to get them. This made the King furious and he sent troops to destroy all the people who had rejected His invitation.

Then the King sent his servants out again only this time to the highways and byways and invite everyone (Jew and Gentile) you find and tell them, "The original guests were found to be unworthy, come to the wedding feast The servants brought in everyone they found and the wedding was filled with guests.

Wedding garments were provided by the King at the door. Therefore, when the king mingled among the guest and found a man who was not wearing the proper wedding garment, that meant that the guest had refused to put on the wedding garment provided for him, snuck in to the banquet hall without it and was lounging among the other guests without the proper attire.

This was a great insult to the king who had gone to great lengths to provide the wedding feast. He had the man bound and thrown into outer darkness.

A Trap About Paying Taxes
Matt 22:15-22
(see also Mark12:13-17, Luke20:20-26)

The Pharisees finely got tired of being insulted with Yeshua's parables so they left. Then the Herodians,
(a political group supporting the Royal Family, Romes client rulers. ~Jewish Annotated New Testament~) began plotting as to what question could they ask him in order to trap him. If his answer was different from what Rome demanded then they could arrest him.

They sent a group of their students to Yeshua and they started off with flattering words..."Teacher, you are honest and teach the truth, you don't care what others think of you, you don't judge others by their appearance" and so on and so on. "We have a question, what do you think Is it permitted to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

He knew they were trying to trick him and he called them on it, "Why are you trying to test me you hypocrites" Then he says, "Show me the tax money". The tax was a denarius:

  • iu
He askes, "Whose image and inscription is this?" "Caesar's", they responded. His response, "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar and to God what is Gods".
  • This famous comment is enigmatic, not to say ambiguous or ambivalent: if one believes Caesar is due taxes, then pay; if one believes everything belongs to God, then do not pay. Thus Jesus avoids the anger of both Rome and Rome's opponents, even as he forces his interlocutors to answer their question about taxes themselves. ~The Jewish Annotated New Testament~

Religious Leaders Ask a Tricky Question
Matt 22:23-33
(see also Mrk 12:18-27, Luke20:27-40)

Now the Sadducees pose a question to Yeshua to try and trip him up.

The Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection so they asked a question that had to do with the law in Deut 25:5–6 that teaches what should take place in the event that a married couple does not have children and the man dies. This was a Levirate law and it's purpose seems to be for carrying on the "family" name plus a means of provision for the widow of the man who had died. It was already in existance before Moses and has nothing to do with the Levites. It is pretty much no longer practiced in todays world.

(Paraphrased) "If the circumstances and events cause a woman to have been married to seven brothers who all died whose wife is she in the resurrection?"

Yeshua scolds them for their lack of knowledge of the scriptures or the power of God. Then he explains that in the resurrection there will be no marriage and that they will be like the angels.

It does not say we will be angels, but "like" the angels.

  • When we die, we will not become angels. We will be like them in that we will live forever and have no need for marriage. There will be no exclusive or sexual relationships in heaven. Every person will enjoy perfect spiritual relationships with others.~Wendys Blog~
Then, since they (the Sadducees) did not beleive in the resurrection, he added, "Haven't you read what was spoken to you by God?" "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? (Ex 3:6) He is not the God of the dead, but of the living!”
  • Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
    (38) For all live unto him.--St. Luke alone adds the words. They are of value as developing the meaning of those that precede them. All life, in the truest, highest sense of that term, depends upon our relation to God. We live to Him, and in Him. And so when He reveals Himself as the God of those who have passed from earth, He witnesses that that relation continues still. They are not dead, but are still living unto Him. We may, perhaps, connect the thought thus expressed with St. Paul's words, "in Him we live, and move, and have our being," in his speech at Athens. (See Note on Acts 17:28.)
The crowd again was astounded by his teaching.

The Greatest Commandment
Matt 22:34-40
(see also Mark 12:28-34, Luke 10:25-28)

In Hebrew the word for "commandment" is Mitzvot.

  • In its strictest sense, it refers only to commandments instituted in the Torah; however, the word is commonly used in a more generic sense to include all of the laws, practices and customs of halakhah, and is often used in an even more loose way to refer to any good deed. ~Jewish Virtual Library~
The Pharisees seemed to be gluttons for punishment. LOL When they saw how Yeshua silenced the Sadducees they decided to give it a try again in tricking him with a question. One of them, being a lawyer, asked him, "what is the greatest commandment in the Torah?", (the first five books in the Old Testiment).

Yeshua answered, “‘You shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire Torah and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

These two commanment were quotes from Deut 6:5 and Lev 19:18.

He then says that the entire Torah and the Prophets hang (are based on) these two commandments. Iin other words, all of Torah and the Prophets are encompassed within those two. Love God with all our heart, soul, and mind and loving our neighbor as we love ourself.

If we love God we will not worship other gods, we will not take his name in vain (representing HIM in an unrighteous manner), we will keep the Sabbath (the 7th day of the week) holy, we will honor our father and mother. If we love our neighbor as ourself we will not murder (hate toward others is equal to murder according to Yeshua), we will not commit adultery (just lusting after another is equal to adultery), we won't steal, we won't bear false witness against our neighbor, and we won't covet what our neighbors have. OUCH!

The fact that we are all guilty of all of these things at some point in our life and walk with God is not a condemnation from God (for those who have put their faith and trust in Yeshua for their salvation-see Rom 8:1) but a signal of where in our life we need to seek God for help and deliverance.

Every time the Holy Spirit pricks our heart when we do something contrary to loving God and our neighbor as ourself, first, we should immediately repent, then we should ask God to show us what we need to do to overcome that action, or lack thereof. (See James4:17) Then, don't wallow in self-pity but pick yourself up, grab hold of God's hand and move on. :amen: Walk in the light of His Word.

Yeshua Overturns the Arguments
Matt 22:41-46
(See also Mrk 12:35-37, Luk 20:41-44)

Yeshua sees the Pharisees gathered together and he goes to them and asks them a riddle. He starts with saying, "What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?"

They answer with, "He's David's son"

Yeshua then quotes Ps 110:1, and asks, "If David calls him Lord, how is he his son?" How could David, led by the Holy Spirit, call one of his descendants Lord?

  • The first “LORD” in Ps 110 is translated from the Hebrew word (I added the link) Yahweh or Jehovah. It refers to God the Father. The second “Lord” is the translation of the Hebrew word “Adonai” which means simply Lord but can also refer to God.~Never Thirst~
None of them could answer the question and they never again tried to trick him with their questions.

Seven Woes
Matt 23:1-36
(see also Mrk 12:38-40, Lke 11:37-52, 20:45-47

Seven Woes said:
23 Then Yeshua spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2 saying, “The Torah scholars and Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses. (a place of honor) 3 So whatever they tell you, do and observe. But don’t do what they do; for what they say, they do not do. 4 They tie up heavy loads, hard to carry, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them. 5 All their works they do to be noticed by men. They make their tefillin wide and their tzitziyot long. (Ex 13:9, 16, Deut 6:8, 11:18, 15:37-41 6 They love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called rabbi by men.

8 “But you are not to be called rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And call no man on earth your father; for One is your Father, who is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Messiah. 11 But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

13 “But woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not enter yourselves, nor do you let those enter who are trying to go in. (14 Some manuscripts add v. 14: Woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, while praying at length as a show. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. See Mrk 12:40, Lke 20:47)

15 “Woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel over land and sea to make one convert. And when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourself.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘Whoever swears by the Temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the Temple, he is obligated.’ 17 O fools and blind ones! Which is greater, the gold or the Temple that made the gold holy? (Ex 30:29) 18 And you say, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.’ 19 O blind ones! Which is greater, the offering or the altar that makes the offering holy? (Ex 29:37) 20 Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the Temple, swears both by the Temple and by Him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.

23 “Woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! You tithe (Lev 27:30, Deut 12:6, 17, 14:22-23, Mal 3:8-10) mint and dill and cumin, yet you have neglected the weightier matters of Torah—justice and mercy and faithfulness. It is necessary to do these things without neglecting the others. 24 O blind guides, straining out a gnat while swallowing a camel!

25 “Woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and uncontrolled desire. 26 O blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.

27 “Woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, you appear righteous to men on the outside, but are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 “Woe to you, Torah scholars and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the tzaddikim. 30 And you say, ‘If we’d been alive in the days of our forefathers, we wouldn’t have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers! 33 O snakes, you brood of vipers! How will you escape the condemnation of Gehenna?

34 “Because of this, behold, I’m sending you prophets and wise men and Torah scholars. Some of them you will kill and execute at the stake, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city. 35 And so, upon you shall come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the Temple and the altar. (Gen 4:8, Zech 11, 2 Chron 24:21) 36 Amen, I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.”

Yeshua comes down hard on the Torah teachers and the Pharisees. Why? Because while they taught correct "Torah instructions" they themselves did not do them. They were clean-looking on the outside but on the inside they were dirty. Their hearts were evil while they did everything to make the outside look holy. They burdened people with their add-on's, of which in and of themselves were not bad, but they went overboard and "required" things that were not a requirement of Torah. These things, become burdens. Iinstead of Torah being a joy to the people, as David described it, (See Ps 119 plus many other Psalms) it became a burden.

These people liked titles and special favors because of who they were, showing off, etc.. When it says "don't call anyone Rabbi", it's saying "don't make anyone other than God a "say so" in your life. You commune with God, you study, you pray...don't expect someone else to do it for you and then tell you what to do and you just blindly do it because you trust them. It's not saying that you cannot call someone "teacher", etc., just don't give them the "say all" in your walk with God. And if you are a teacher, do NOT demand that pepole call you by a title that sets you above others. Definitely, we should respect others, but respect is one thing, seeking a high place in the hearts of others is another.

  • Christ taught that the source of all life and truth is God, and no one ought to seek or receive a title that properly belongs to Him. No one should be as revered as God is. ~Got Questions~
Don't we do some of this in our own churches sometimes? "You gotta show up at church everythime the doors are open, you gotta pray in tongues for so many hours then you will have the power to raise the dead and heal the sick, you gotta dance or you're not really free, you gotta call certain people "prohet so n' so", yada, yada, yada.

We start studying the scriptue and get a bit of knowledge and we puff ourself up and think we're hot stuff. We love it that others come to us with their questions. Think about it. Pray about it. Don't be rebellious toward those in authority, but don't just blindly follow either. Don't take offense when othes don't quite accept what you're telling them either. Show them what scripture says, but they need to come to their own conclusions.

If where you go to church is more of a burden than a joy find somewhere else. Somewhere that teaches scripture, not just that church's doctrinal stand and topics that just pull a scripture frrom here and there to supposedly back up what they are saying. Become more like Yeshua and teach others to do the same, instead of like whitewashed sepulchers.

He has told you, humanity, what is good,
and what Adonai is seeking from you:
Only to practice justice, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.

~Miah 6:8~

The Lament over Jerusalem
Matt 23:37-39
(See also Lke13:34-35)

Jerusalem, the promised land that God gave to Israel. HE delivered her children from bondage in Egypt and while they wandered in the desert due to their worship of the golden calf, all during that 40 year journey HE cared for them. He made sure they had water, food, shade, etcc. Whatever they needed HE supplied it.

Then somehow they became distracted and by the time Yeshua came on the scene they had wandered far from how God had instructed them so as to have a happy and abundant existance.

Yeshua laments over Jerusalem. His people. He longed to gather them the same way a mother hen gathers her children...calling them to come to Him for their protection. But they refused. The devine presense of God would leave the Temple upon it's distruction [see Jer 12:7] He tells them, You will nver see me again until you cry out ‘Baruch ha-ba b’shem Adonai. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” [see Ps 118:26]

God keeps His promises and He will never leave or forsake Jerusalem. Thank you Father, that you have made all (Jew and Gentile) who put their faith and trust in Yeshua, partakers in your blessings. We will see Him again.

The Destruction of the Temple Foretold
Matt 24:1-2
(see also Mrk 13:1-2, Lke21:5-6)

The Second Temple

One of the disciples was awestruck with the Temple. It was magnificent, but as Yeshua spoke, it has since been destroyed. The only thing left is the Western Wall also known as the Wailing Wall or the Kotel (Live camera).

Contrary to some comments I've heard, the Western Wall is NOT worshipped. It is a place of prayer, much like the prayer benches in many churches or some have them in their homes. I hope to visit Jerusalem, some day.

Signs of The End Times
Matt 24:3-14
(see also Mrk 13:3-13, Lke 21:17-19)

They've left the Temple area and are now at the Mount of Olives. The disciples managed to get alone with him and asked, "Tell us when these things you've told us will happen? When will you be returning and what will be the signs of the end of the world?"

First, Yeshua answers with, "don't let anyone lead you astray?" Led astray from what? From what they've learned and followed from the scriptures...which at that time was only Torah and The Prophets and Yeshuas teachings on it.

The New Testiment would come out of letters written by the disciples and the Apostle Paul to the new churches growing out of their testimony. Those letters did not undo what was before, nor did they add new teachings. They gave correct understanding to what God had already said and they expounded on it, bringing understanding that was not burdensome like many of the Torah teachers and leaders had done.

"You will hear of wars and rumors of wars but don't be alarmed". Boy if that doesn't sound like today's world. "Don't be afraid, these things have to happen". Nations rising against nations, famines, earthquakes in various places...but it's not the end yet. These things are only the beginning, the birth pains (a reference to a woman about to give birth).

A true believer is NOT loved by everybody. According to Yeshua those who've put their faith and trust in him and are walking out the life of a real believer will be hated. Some will pretend to like you be be planning downfall to you. We're already seeing a lot of that in the world too. Just mentioning the Bible or Yeshua/Jesus gets people up and screaming with hatred in the world today. "Don't be afraid", Yeshua said. "Don't be led astray".

"Lawlessness will multiply, the love of many will grow cold, but the one who endures to the end will be saved."

  • Definition of endurance

1 : the ability to withstand hardship or adversity especially : the ability to sustain a prolonged stressful effort or activity a marathon runner's endurance

2 : the act or an instance of enduring or suffering
"Don't be afraid"
"Don't give up"
"Endure to the end"

The whole world will hear, then the end will come. amd you who are found faithful will receive a reward. Check yourself. Are you living to the best of your ability and understanding in accordance with God's word, or against it? Don't be led astray, if God hated it then, He still hates it.

iu

Jame 1:12 Happy is the one who endures testing, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love Him.

The Great Tribulation
Matt 24:15-28
(see Mrk 13:14-23; Lke21:20-24)

Yeshua continues, "So when you see the 'abomination of desolation' (the total destruction of Jerusalem with abominable things) which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet [Dan 9:27; 11:31; 12:11]

  • This refers to the action of Antiochus V (called "Epiphanes") in setting up a statue of Zeus in the Temple, at Jerusalem in 168 or 167 BCE (1 Macc 1.54) ~The Jewish Annotated New Testament~
Pray that it won't happen on Shabbat": Breaking Sabbath laws is permissible in order to preserve life. [Lke 14:5]

The elect are the believers who remain faithful.

Don't become distracted by reports of Messiahs here and there. The real Messiah will come just as lightening comes with flashes from the east as far as the west, so also will be the coming of the son of man. The entire world will see him.

I found several thoughts on the statement "For wherever the carcass is, there the vultures will gather." The link attached I feel explains it the simplest and best. You can check the others out on your own.

The bottom line message of Yeshua again, is "Do not be led astray". It truly is a matter of life or death.
