Usually by color. My grandpa had a black lab and we named him Pepper. My friend Steve recently got a black lab as well and calls him Coal.

Cats are kinda different. My dad had two cats, the boy was Buddy and the girl was Missy. I miss them, but they're in Oklahoma with my step-mom.

I've found that pets essentially tell you their names. Not through speech or writing, of course, but it becomes clear that some names fit better than others. I just go with whatever seems to suit the pet. You don't have to decide right away. If it takes a few days or whatnot to pick a good one, it's worth the patience IMO.

I go with whatever randomly pops into my head. This usually happens after a few days or a week of owning the cat. I always have a name picked out in the beginning, but as soon as I get the cat that preconceived name flies out the window. It never fits. So, I just wait and wait until something jumps out at me that simply fits.

I enjoy renaming other peoples dogs and cats.

Eventually they respond to these new names. I like to give them like lower class blue collar worker names.. like Shelly or Jim.

That's basically what I was trying to say. It took a while for me to find the right name for my cat.

Yeah. :) I had my cat, Queenie, for about a week until I finally knew what to call her. I was just sitting there on the bed playing with her and all of a sudden the character 'Queenie' from the movie 'Pocketful of Miracles' randomly popped into my head and it fit her SO well. It just stuck.

I usually have one main name for them. But then I will come up with other alternatives too.

I had to ask God for the name of the last acquisition though. And He told me to call her, "Kurry".

Other names I've called her are: Furry and Burry.

Just what sounds "right". My daughter named her cat "Comet" because I once said I wanted to name a cat that...it followed in series of my other cats I had when they were small, Ajax and Babo ... both were names of bathroom cleaners.... However, I call her cat "Fred" because that is what seemed to fit (and annoy her...cause you have to annoy your 13 year old daughters). However, she calls him "The Rat" when she is upset and he answers best to "Kitty" for her. He answers to "Fred" for me. "Cat!" is also a name name that works.

The dog is "Missy". She was such a scared skinny thing from the pound and it matched her well. The name she had before was "Ladybug" but it didn't fit. She is my son's little "Missy". She can't wait for him to get home each day and is devoted to him...though she loves the rest of us too.

We had a Sunfish fish named "Sport" because he loved to come to the side and follow my husband the room from his aquarium. He also would beg for worms and other treats my husband brought him. Hoover was the algae eater because he vacuumed the tank. I can't remember the other fishes names but they matched their personalities...(we had two bluegills that worked like an evil gang, one would chase the feeder fish out of hiding and the other would wait for dinner to arrive - and a depressed mud catfish that would jump out of the tank if we didn't keep the lid on (he would dry out but would come back to life if you put him back in the tank)...we were going to return him to his pond but my brother-in-law found him on the carpet and threw him in the dumpster because we forgot to tell him to put him back in the aquarium even if he looked dead.

Prior to that, our dogs always had names that were tested by my husband calling for them loudly. If you couldn't call them from the woods easily, the name didn't get chosen. Our redbone hounds were first a male named Red and then the female was named Pepper. We later had Peaches. And my kids named the next dog "Hank" after their favorite book series "Hank, the cowdog".

I always think food or creative names sound fun. I like it for other people's pets. But when it comes to my own, I usually end up going for human names. I like when the name is unnecessarily regal. Just my own odd sense or humour I guess lol.

My family’s dog is named Bentley- commonly referred to as Master Bentley *pronounced with an English accent* or Mr. Bentley.
