Hello! I'm here to ask what methods you are using to circumvent/avoid profane content on the internet, specifically the content which pop-up's out of nowhere as an ad.

I'm personally fine with that, I know how to mentally block these images and not resort to lustful thinking, what I am worried about is my 8 year old son.

While I only allow internet usage in the communal spaces of our home (kitchen, living room), I am not naive enough to think that this alone is sufficient. My friend recommended me an application called friendly family dns (you can find a link here: Parent control app, Family internet filter | Family Friendly DNSParent control app, Family internet filter | Family Friendly DNS )
which allegedly blocks all inappropriate content related content. Have any of you tried it? Can I rest assured that it's working at least 90% of the times? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

I use OpenDNS which seems to be part of what that the aforementioned filter uses. It gets a lot of the ads - additionally using AdBlockPlus as a browser extension helps.

There's still a lot of crap that will inevitably get through, but those two together will majorly help reduce the risk.

I'm not a parent, but I am an aunt. Parental controls on a computer do not take the place of hands-on supervision.

I would say give him a highly restrictive guest account and sit with him and watch him as he uses the computer. Limit his time on there. Encourage him to go outside to play.

Encourage him to read books, to journal if he wants, and definitely get outside to ride a bike, play frisbee, baseball, anything but letting him be glued to a computer alone.

Don't let the computer be the parent. You are the parent. Be the parent.

All good things
