Hi all,

This thread is for general discussion on what the bible says about losing salvation. Does the bible really teach this? Why are there so many warnings from both the old and New Testament scriptures not to depart the faith and fall away from believing and following God's Word and return back to a life of sin?

Why are we admonished...

2 CORINTHIANS 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know you not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except you be reprobates?

Which in my view is good advice considering that there will be many on that day that thought and believed that they were following God and were not following God...

MATTHEW 7:22-23 [22], Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? [23], And then will I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work sin.

and again a little earlier...

MATTHEW 7:13-20
[13], Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
[14], Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads to life, and few there be that find it.
[15], Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
[16], You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
[17], Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit.
[18], A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
[19], Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
[20], Why by their fruits you shall know them.

The issue here and in the OP is to examine ourselves as it is ONLY all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD that are in a saved state with God. According to God's WORD all those who CONTINUE in KNOWN UNREPENTANT SIN will not enter into the KINGDOM of HEAVEN *HEBREWS 10:26-27 because they reject the gift of God's dear son *ROMANS 6:23. OBEDIENCE to God's LAW is not how we are saved it is the FRUIT of God's work in us as we BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD through love. If our faith has no fruit it is dead *JAMES 2:18-20; 26 and our tree will be cast down and thrown into the fire *MATTHEW 3:10; 7:19-20; 13:49-50.

It is not God's will that we sin but if we do we have an advocate with the father *1 JOHN 2:1-4

..............

MATTHEW 24:13 [12], And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. [13], But he that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved.

MARK 13:13 [13], And you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved.

HEBREWS 3:13-14 [13], But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. [14], For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end

HEBREWS 3:6 [6], But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

COLOSSIANS 1:12-14; 23
[12], Giving thanks to the Father, which has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
[13], Who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
[14], In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.....
[23], If you continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which you have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister

REVELATION 2:26 [26], And he that overcomes, and keeps my works to the end, to him will I give power over the nations

2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-3 [1], Now we beseech you, brothers, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together to him, [2], That you be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. [3], Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition

1 PETER 4:18 [18], And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

HEBREWS 10:26-27 [26], For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, [27], But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

HEBREWS 6:4-8 [4], For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [5], And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [6], If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. [7], For the earth which drinks in the rain that comes oft on it, and brings forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receives blessing from God:
[8], But that which bears thorns and briers is rejected, and is near to cursing; whose end is to be burned.

MATTHEW 13:18-23 [18], Hear you therefore the parable of the sower.
[19], When any one hears the word of the kingdom, and understands it not, then comes the wicked one, and catches away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. [20], But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it; [21], Yet has he not root in himself, but endures for a while: for when tribulation or persecution rises because of the word, by and by he is offended. [22], He also that received seed among the thorns is he that hears the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.[23], But he that received seed into the good ground is he that hears the word, and understands it; which also bears fruit, and brings forth, some an hundred times, some sixty, some thirty.

REVELATION 2:26 And he that overcomes, and keeps my works to the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

REVELATION 3:5
He that overcomes, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

REVELATION 3:12 Him that overcomes will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God: and I will write on him my new name.

REVELATION 3:21 To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

REVELATION 21:7 He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

These are only a few scriptures. The same warnings are all through both the old and new testament scriptures.

..............

Questions for discussion;

1. Can we lose our salvation? (linked to answer)

2. What does it mean only those that are faithful to the end will be saved?

3. Saved from what?

4. Is anyone in a saved state before God while living in a life of known unrepentant sin?

5. Why are there so many warnings from God's Word not to depart the faith if we cannot lose salvation?

God bless.

This thread is for general discussion on what the bible says about losing salvation.
I reviewed the various verses from various portions of the Bible and still do not see one which states or even suggests one who is sealed with the Holy Spirit and child of God 'loses salvation." What do you consider the strongest passage from your list which supports the OP claim?

The issue here and in the OP is to examine ourselves as it is ONLY all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD that are in a saved state with God.
On this, we are in agreement. Let’s see what Jesus has to say.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
— John 10:27-28

Does He have anything to say about those who aren’t His sheep?

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me. But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep.
— John 10:25-26

Anything else?

He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
— John 8:47

Hi red nice to seen you here and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Many people get confused with the Greek word for sealed. It is not the same as our english word. The Greek words used for seal is σφραγίζω; sphragizō (G4973); to stamp with a signet or private mark for security or preservation (literally or figuratively); by implication to keep secret, to attest: - (set a, set to) seal up, stop.

We are sealed with God's Spirit by BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD *ACTS 2:38; 3:19; PROVERBS 28:9; 1 JOHN 1:9; 1 JOHN 2:1-4; 1 JOHN 3:3-10; ROMANS 8:1-4; 2 CORINTHIANS 1:22; EPHESIANS 1:13; MATTHEW 11:28-30;1 JOHN 2:17; MATTHEW 7:21-23; ROMANS 2:13; JAMES 1:23.

We can GREIVE the Holy Spirit of God by not BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD. If we GRIEVE God's Spirit by not believing and following God's Word we can QUENCH God's Spirit

EPHESIANS 4:30 And GRIEVE NOT THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD, whereby you are sealed to the day of redemption.

1 THESSAOLONIANS 5:19, QUENCH NOT THE SPIRIT.

NOTE: These scripture references here are WARNINGS to the BELIEVERS and FOLLOWERS of God's Word who have not grieved the Holy Spirit. The Greek words used here also for quench not the Spirit is σβέννυμι; sbennumi (G4570) which is a verb and means to extinguish (literally or figuratively): - go out, quench. Ephesians 4:30 tells us that we should not grieve the Spirit. Note also the CONTEXT of EPHESIANS 4:30. We grieve or quench the Spirit by living like the pagans by not believing and following God's Word *EPHESIANS 4:17-19, by lying *EPHESIANS 4:25, by being angry *EPHESIANS 4:26-27, by stealing *EPHESIANS 4:28, by cursing *EPHESIANS 4:29, by being bitter *EPHESIANS 4:31, by being unforgiving *EPHESIANS 4:32, and by being sexually immoral *EPHESIANS 5:3-5. To grieve the Spirit is to act out in a sinful manner, whether it is in thought only or in both thought and deed and not believing and following God. These WARNINGS are for BELIEVERS of God's WORD not to put out; quench or grieve the Holy Spirit!

Those who do not believe and follow God's Word grieve and quench the Holy Spirit and are unbelievers who do not believe and follow God's Word..

HEBREWS 3:10 Why I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do always err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

HEBREWS 3:17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?

If we GRIEVE or QUENCH God's Spirit we can be come God's enemy...

ISAIAH 63:10 But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.

ACTS 7:51 You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.

.............

REPENTANCE *MATTHEW 3:2; MATTHEW 4:17; LUKE 13:3-5; ACTS 2:38; ACTS 3:19; ACTS 8:32; PROVERBS 28:9-13, CONFESSION *1 JOHN 1:9; PROVERBS 28:13 OF SIN *JAMES 2:10-11; 1 JOHN 3:4 and FAITH *JOHN 3:14-21 in God's promises *2 PETER 1:4 in the NEW COVENANT are all requirement for salvation.

Those who follow God do not make a practice sin and those who continue in SIN do not know God *1 JOHN 3:9; 1 JOHN 2:1-4 and need to be BORN AGAIN. If the HOLY SPIRIT cannot come and go why are we warned not to QUENCH (put out) or GRIEVE the HOLY SPIRIT *EPHESIANS 4:30; PSALMS 51:10-13?

We GRIEVE God's SPIRIT by SIN *GENESIS 6:5-6; PSALMS 119:158 and not BELIEVING and FOLLOWING God's WORD *PSALMS 95:10-11; HEBREWS 3:10-11; HEBREWS 3:17-19.

It is ONLY those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD to the END that will be saved *JOHN 8:31-36; MATTHEW 24:13; MARK 13:13; HEBREWS 3:13-14; HEBREWS 3:6; COLOSSIANS 1:12-14; 23; HEBREWS 10:26-27; HEBREWS 6:4-8; MATTHEW 13:18-23.

According to the scriptures if we are not CONTINUING to BELIEVE and FOLLOW God's WORD to the END we can QUENCH (put out) and GRIEVE God's Spirit and we depart from the faith *2 THESSALONIANS 2:1-3; 1 TIMOTHY 4:1.

All these WARNINGS from God's WORD are for BELIEVERS brother.

Thanks for sharing

Did you know typing in all caps is the internet equivalent of screaming at people?

it's rude, just saying..

Sorry you feel that way but my intention here was only to highlight certain points.

On this, we are in agreement.
Then examine ourselves according to the scriptures to see if we are in the faith or not is something we must do *2 CORINTHIANS 13:5. I believe this is important for everyone of us as we are admonished to do so as it is only those who believe and follow God's Word only in the present tense that have the hope of salvation now and only those who endure temptation to the end believing and following God's Word that receive eternal life *JAMES 1:12; MATTHEW 24:13; MARK 13:13; HEBREWS 3:13-14; HEBREWS 3:6; COLOSSIANS 1:12-14; 23; HEBREWS 10:26-27 HEBREWS 6:4-8 etc. It is the majority who think that they were saved and where not and will be dissappointed come judgment day *MATTHEW 7:14; MATTHEW 7:22-23; MATTHEW 22:14
Let’s see what Jesus has to say. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. — John 10:27-28 Does He have anything to say about those who aren’t His sheep? — John 8:47
Your scriptures only support the OP here. God's Sheep are those who believe and follow God's Word.

JOHN 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

JOHN 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me

Those who are not God's sheep do not hear God's Voice (the Word) or follow what God says.

Exactly. So there’s no losing of salvation. If you aren’t His sheep, you never hear Him, or follow.

Not at all. As already shown in the scriptures provided in the OP we are WARNED not to depart the faith because doing so we can lose our salvation. It is only those who endure temptation to the end believing and following God's Word have receive eternal life.

JAMES 1:12 Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him.

Those who believed and followed God's Word yesterday but have departed the faith to return back to a life of known unrepentant sin today are no longer believers and followers of God's Word *HEBREWS 6:4-8 because they have departed from the faith.

If it was not possible to lose salvation there would not be so many warnings in God's Word to believers showing that we can.

Actually, you never showed that. I, however, showed that Jesus clearly says that He gives His sheep eternal life. And He loses none of them. So your premise has been proved, from scripture, to be a falsehood.

Well that is not true. The scriptures are clearly provided in the OP. What is it that you do not agree with? You have not provided any scripture which does not support what is provided in the OP here. This OP proves your understanding of the scriptures that we cannot lose salvation to be in error. Only God's Word is true and we should believe and follow it *ROMANS 3:4. Ignoring God's Word does not make it dissappear. The ones that JESUS does not lose are only those who believe and follow God's Word always in the "present tense". Those who once believed but no longer follow are no longer believers. Salvation is conditional on believing and following God's Word. Those who believe and follow God's Word are God's sheep. Those who do not or no longer believe and follow God's Word are not His sheep (always present tense).

The scriptures are clearly provided in the OP.

Notice how every verse you cite describes salvation as a future event?

3. Saved from what?

That's what I would have asked you. If it is to be salvation from Hell and the wrath of God, then salvation is a future event. If salvation is a future event, then we cannot lose what we do not yet have. If salvation is our destiny, then we will find out when we get there.

So, in short, the reason for unbelief is that they aren’t His sheep and don’t hear Him. And to be even clearer, it’s not belief that causes people to be sheep. Nor is it unbelief that causes them not to be sheep.

Salvation is conditional on beleiving and following God's Word to the end...

MATTHEW 24:13 [12], And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. [13], But he that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved.

Salvation is from sin and is why the scriptures state it is only those who endure temptation to the end that receive eternal life..

JAMES 1:12 Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him.

REVELATION 2:26 And he that overcomes, and keeps my works to the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

More evidence that the saved are saved eternally.

For the believer, God is our Father. We have been adopted (verses provided upon request). So how the Father treats His children is a reflection upon Him. How does He love us?

For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. - Psalm 100:5

His love endures, and He is faithful. Those who think salvation can be lost have absolutely no concept of what it means to be a child, nor (apparently) a parent.

JOHN 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

JOHN 10:26-27 [26] But you believe not, because you are not of my sheep, as I said to you.[27] My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me

Your only supporting what is provided here in the OP. Those who do not believe or no longer believe and follow God's Word (present tense) are not God's sheep because they do not believe and follow God's Word.

If we are believing and following God's Word in the present tense we are God's people. God's Word teaches that if we are not believing and following God's Word in the present tense we are not his people.
