Why do so many people think tithing is any kind of monetary donation when the Bible clearly defines it as 10% of your monthly salary?

It doesn't say that at all.
The OT tithe was food, and the early church did not tithe or teach it - they shared ALL their possessions.

One tenth of their food, land, etc. would be tithing in the days before money existed.

Hmm.. been many times not faithful in giving. Just didn't think about it.. my fault. My Father .. always gives.. I am so humbled by that alone. My giving ALWAYS is to Him. Not to get.. yet I will always be blessed for given. And it always helps others that are in need.

I die daily.. to what? Is it ME I am thinking about or Him and others? We look at the person receiving it. As if GOD is not in control. You give to who? Then thats how you will be blessed. I give to my Father. What that person does.. WILL answer to GOD. But MANY no matter what the WORLD and some Christians say.. are very faithful with what we give..

So give to you the one you say you love..or not..For He will not make us do anything.

I'm Lutheran (LCMS) and our church encourages us to tithe but I end up only tithing when I can afford it. While tithing is good and holy, I also have a responsibility to pay off debts and pay my bills first (it's mostly medical bills for me). If I have no money after paying those I need to pay then I cannot tithe. To do otherwise in my case would be foolish and irresponsible.

I don't practice tithing, I practice charity.
That's why you are better at charity than tithing.
You have to practice to get good at something.

I suppose we could practice at home.
Then when we get to church we would be better at it.

We could throw $20 bills at a plate. Work on your distance shots.
Maybe make a roll of 100 $1 dollar bills. Send the usher out for a long bomb.
Or fold bills into little paper airplanes to throw at the usher.
Try to hit the plate when it is several rows in front of you.
Or work on your origami. Make an offering crane.

God loves a cheerful giver, right?

And I also would like to add one more thing.

Jesus said to give to the poor, needy and beggars.

So when you give a tithe you are following Jesus commands.

So in order to even be a Christian, you have to give to the poor, needy and beggars.

I hope that helps.

1. But that's not what you said. You said that the Bible clearly defines it as 10% of your monthly salary. Growing crops doesn't give a monthly salary - they would only get paid when the crops were fully grown and sold. They were not instructed to give 10% of their land.
2. I don't know when money as we know it existed, but Deuteronomy 14:25-26 says that if they had too much food to carry to the place God told them to go they should exchange it for silver and use the silver to buy whatever they wanted to eat for their feast. In Genesis 37:28 Joseph was sold to the Midianites for 20 shekels of silver. In Genesis 42:25-27, Joseph gave his brothers grain, and also returned the silver they had given him for the grain. They may not have had coins in Moses' day but they certainly had gold, silver and bronze; it was used to build the tabernacle, Exodus 25:3.

I searched for Bible references to tithing on Google. Here they are:

https://www.christianbiblereference.org/faq_tithe.htm

Have you actually read this article, or just thought "here is where the Bible mentions tithing"?
Read the first of the questions:
Does the Bible require me to give 10 percent of my income to my church? Should my offering be computed on gross or net income?
The Bible does not require Christians to give any certain percentage.

In response to an earlier post, it's not making a deal with God. "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,
There's no storehouse, the passage is talking about God matching our generous attitude. No storehouse to give out to the needy, then the rest doesn't apply.

What are your thoughts on "the poor, needy and beggars" being Christians?
By definition they aren't even able to care for themselves.

By definition they aren't even able to care for themselves.

Well, I was poor, and a beggar, and very needy, and when your in that state you see things in people others do not get to see. Most people think there Christians in a church and do not follow Jesus, so I look at it both ways.

The sad truth is most all the homeless are true believers as in there poor state they turn to god for help. Most of them have no choice but to go to God. Not all of them, but most.

Also there is the fact that half of them deny this world so this world has denied them, I have seen it with my own eyes. The Real Christians who follow Gods laws are the most effected as the devil is making sure they have nothing.

So its not about them not able to care for them self, its about the devil taking away what they have, and soon, in life, your give up. there is only so many times the devil can take away your life.

Like me, I am divorced, not by choice,I was a good husband, good father, Very good in my book.
But the devil took my kids and wife. Many times.

If my exes where real Christians and followed Gods law, they would come to me and reconsider there position against me. But, there father is the devil and they listen to the devil.

I guaranty you, 100 percent, if I followed the devil and this world, all of them would come to me and want me and need me.

So, soon, I to will just give up and live on the streets and beg, because I would rather follow Gods laws.

Eventually it will happen. Why? because I will give up the fight and just wait for God to surrender me.

I have a lot to say about this as i was there, living with them, for a long time.

Go out and test it, Go out and ask every beggar you see for change, and most all of them will give you change. Or tell you if i had it I would give it to you, because there humbled to god.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your testimony with us.

I have struggled financially most of my adult life. Fortunately, my marriage has held together for nearly forty years. That's been a real blessing.

God has led many divorced men into my life for me to be a support for. After a few years of those kind of relationships I realized why it seemed to be working so well. I was just being a friend to these guys. I didn't look down on them, I didn't lecture or blame them, I was just there for them. I never offered any advice unless they asked me for it.

I was also thinking about the years I spent in prison ministry. We hosted a Friday night Bible study in the chapel. It was such a blessing to hang out with those guys. I oftentimes got more out of that than my time at church on Sunday.

I agree with what you are saying about down-and-outers being close to God. That's all they have left. When you get to the end of your rope, you find out that God is pulling for you on the other end.
