Lets try this again the right way. Hopefully staff will delete the first one.

Why not change the term from tithing to giving? Then it is clearer. We should follow 2 Cor 8 and 2 Cor 9 for the guidelines on how Christians should be giving. Some principles to follow

  1. Give cheerfully.
  2. Those who sow bountifully will reap bountifully.
  3. Jesus became poor on the cross so that you can become rich.

Like I do not have trust that church leaders are not child molesters.
All my years.
You assume that ALL church leaders are child molesters? That's nuts.

What I am facing has nothing to do with not tithing. To say it is would be foolish. One is because of health insurance and the fact that I don't make much as an EMT. The other has to do with an ex who just wants more money from me.
However, you go ahead and think it's because of my not tithing. I know better!
I wasn't talking about how you got in your situation.

I was talking about why God hasn't rescued you from it when He could.

That could well be because you don't put Him first in the distribution of your meager finances - but last.

I suppose you might tell me, "Easy for you to say." But then it isn't me saying it is it?

I didn't write the Bible. I'm just the messenger.

"So take care how you listen; for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him." Luke 8:18

When things are really tight is when you should emulate the widow of Zaraphath and take a leap of faith. 1 Kings 17

That will not be happening anytime soon. I have to watch what I do as anything perceived as detrimental to my kids such as no electricity and no food in the house and I can forget about having my kids as she will stop me from having them.

No thank you!

You continue to think as you do. I will continue to think as I do.
Very well then.

But I'd advise you to read again Malachi 3:10 and Luke 6:38. Then take a look at what God did for the widow in 1 Kings 17.

Remember, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness" 2 Timothy 3:16

Bless you brother.

Not a "requirement" was another person's word concerning tithing.

Actually there aren't many things that are required of believers over and above simple trust in Jesus.
Wrong. there are over 1000 commands in the NT - things that are REQUIRED for New Covenant believers.

But they are requirements for growing and sanctification, NOT for salvation.

Because tithes & offerings are two different things.

As long as you recognize Paul's teaching on giving, do people really care the difference in terms? Just treat it as giving, instead of tithing.

If you are arguing against tithing because you want to keep all the money in your own pocket, that is a silly justification.

And doing all of them involves a simple trust in Jesus and His Word.

"Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure."

As I said earlier. Probably after all of this blows over with the bankruptcy and the going back to court for more child support, and then I can maybe make more money in a different profession within the medical field, then I will revisit giving.

Until then, it's just not going to happen.

How's not tithing working out for you guys?

It sounds to me that you really can't afford NOT to tithe.

"Test Me in this, says the Lord of Hosts. See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out for you a blessing without measure." Malachi 3:10

"Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Luke 6:38

O.T. or New - it seems like it would be a no-brainer for me.

I can't believe you are unable to understand my logic. When you were a kid, did you have enough money to tithe? Of course not. Tithing is giving 10% of your monthly income. Only people who work can tithe and I don't have a job.

Sounds like iLearn has A LOT to learn.
Yeah I need a lot to learn. Currently I am learning from Zac Poonen. He taught me that tithing is not necessary. Go argue with him if you can. I am sure you cannot because he is the real deal and God's true servant and messenger.

It was John Rockefeller that said this about tithing

“I never would have been able to tithe the first million dollars I ever made if I had not tithed my first salary, which was $1.50 per week.”

It does not get easier when your income goes up, trust me. Recall the story about
Elisha and the oil of the widow? 2 Kings 4:1-7

Children are in the best position to tithe/give. If they get an allowance or any other income from work they do, they can learn how to give. Children are typically more generous in their giving than adults.

They learn nothing about tithing. Kids obviously can't work because of laws. Parents want them to save it or spend it on what they want.
