davel,

1. Matthew 7:28 was Christ earthly ministry which was under the Mosaic Law Galatians 4:4.
2 John 1:9 was New Covenant 1 John 1:1-3; 2:5-6; 2 John 1:5-6.
Jesus said in John 13:34; A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another as I have loved you. This was not under the KoH and the KoG message to the nation of Israel Matthew 10:6-7.
This was spoken to the disciples after the rejection of the nation Matthew 23:37-39.
Jesus was preparing his disciples for the soon coming New Covenant of the Church age Matthew 16:18.

3. The whole Bible is for all Christians today in the proper perspective according to the historical and dispensation always context.

4. The Jews were backslidden and trodden down under the foot of men because of losing their savor as salt of the earth Matthew 5:13.
Jesus said the gates of hell shall never prevail against the church so this was not a message to the church historically.
The Sermon on the Mount Jews had to repent Matthew 5:4.
The Jews had a specific blessing and cursing system that the church does not have because the curse has been lifted Galatians 3:13.
It was about the KoH Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. This was about the Abrahamic Covenant and the Davidic Covenant that they were promised Luke 1:69-75.
They had to do these things in order to be blessed.
New Covenant believers are to be peacemakers and pure in hear etc., but because of Christ finished work not trying to work up to a code of ethics. That is not a slam against the law of Moses but because we have a New Covenant built on better promises Hebrews 8:6-7.
Jesus teachings to the Jewish nation were do, do, do and the New Covenant is what he did, what he did, what he did.

5. Moral law and ethics were before the law but most of their knowledge came from their conscience. The law was to bring Israel to Christ and be justified by faith Galatians 3:24.
The point is to understand the different context according to the moral law and for us learning the better way built on better promises according to the New Covenant.
It helps to learn why God dealt in gradual revelation of the redemption plan according to the covenants and their dispensations. Jerry Kelso
Paul and others imported much of the Sermon into the NT. The Sermon = the two great commandments and how they keep the Law. It's all for us today and without the Sermon, people have not God according to John.

He gave a new commandment to replace the first.

Instead of love your neighbor as you love yourself... He replaced it with a new command.

“A new command I give you: Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
Jn 13:34

As stated in the Sermon (which was geared towards the Jews) any unbeliever can love another as them self. Because it does not require the filling of the Holy Spirit to so. Its simply treating another as you would want to be treated. It keeps society flowing in a good way.

Yet?

Remember how Jesus loves his disciples?

When need be, He told them where they were wrong. He actually told them that they were being stupid at times (as found in the Greek). He would call them out on what they were doing wrong. And, even called Peter "Satan" at one point.

Yet? They never stopped loving one another.

Today...very few remain objective enough to be so loved.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord."
Isa 55:8

That means we will all need corrections when learning the Mind of Christ.

Some simply love to attack in the name of love with false ideas. Not to correct.

Some will even defy by refusing correction while they love to be contrary. And, in doing so, become the center of attention (which is what they seek) for season as they refuse to be reasoned with.

Such it is. For some will live in a deception because they refuse the objective Word of God, and go instead with what sits well with their natural way of wanting to see things. Hoping to attract like minded to form his own sect.

grace and peace...

@dave-L you were saying that because you followed the sermon on the mount word for word that it brought you great prosperity and I don’t doubt it in the least. There are others who say they have ‘arrived’ by giving up everything. And then there’s those who have nothing and ask for nothing. The same Teacher instructs them all. Principles shouldn’t be set as precepts tho. That was just the drift that I had gotten in passing but I think it applies.

Paul and others imported much of the Sermon into the NT. The Sermon = the two great commandments and how they keep the Law. It's all for us today and without the Sermon, people have not God according to John.

davel,

1. The Sermon on the Mount was the holiness of the law and the holiness of the church is the body of Christ.

2. The Sermon on the Mount was spoken to the Jewish nation only because it was a part of the KoH and the KoG message Matthew 10:6-7.
The Church is light and salt today but not have been trodden under the feet of men Matthew 5:13.

3. We are not under the Old Covenant which is what Jesus taught and lived otherwise he could have not fulfilled the Mosaic law and been the perfect sacrifice for he was without sin.
Jesus was the New Covenant by shedding his blood for the remission of sins Matthew 26:28 not his teachings.

4. Loving God with all one’s heart is true but under the law they had to do all those commandments in order to do that. We are not obligated to do the 603 laws of the Old covenant etc.
Love thy neighbor as thyself is true but it still goes back to the mechanics of the covenant and keep the commandments or else they would occur the judgement of the Mosaic law.
If one keeps the law and yet offends in one point , he is guilty of all James 1:10.

5. Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 shows what agape love is according to the New Covenant and is what cements those who were given spiritual gifts and how that it was more important than faith and hope.
Paul also said to owe no man anything but love because love is the fulfillment of the law.
Paul reminded the Ephesians to walk in love and refrain from sins because if one is an example of the world we will have no inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. Be not partakers of them.

6. Paul wanted to found of the Lord not according to the righteousness of the law which the Sermon On The Mount was.
It was through the righteousness of faith he wanted to be found of. Why? So that he would know Christ, and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings being made conformable to his death.

7. The Sermon on the Mount is not the way to salvation for New Covenant Believers for Jesus didn’t teach his death and resurrection under the KoH and the KoG message in the age of the law of Moses Hebrews 9:16-17. Do you understand this?

8. The Mosaic law and the New Covenant are close in relation because of the spiritual truths.
Doctrinally, they are at opposite polars because of how the mechanics work in the covenants.
Paul was thankful for the law otherwise he wouldn’t have known sin, such as lust or coveting Romans 7:7 but it was law of sin and death taking advantage of the law that was Holy and Good and made them sin v 8.
It is the law of the Spirit under the New Covenant to make them free from the law of sin and death Romans 8:2.
Does any of this make any sense to you? Jerry Kelso

I have been circling around the Sermon on the Mount since May 2019 for some reason so when I saw this posting I had to sign up and respond for what it's worth. I have been working on writing something up in regards to Matthew 7:21-23; the most fearful words from Jesus "I never knew you...". The Sermon on the Mount starts in Matthew Chapter 5 and goes through 6 and 7. The sermon is a series of sharp defined contrasts between false religion and true religion. By the way, there are only 2 kinds of religion: 1) True religion and 2) false religion. The Jews of Jesus’s day were the illustration of the wrong kind of religion were they not? One of the Jesus was being critical of during this sermon was definitely the Pharisee's. They had developed a form of Judaism by which they earned their way to heaven or at least they thought they did. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus attacked the Jews alms or forms of giving, their ceremonies, their prayers, their forms of worship, all of which were designed to earn God’s favor by some WORK they were doing. Romans 10:3 says as Paul looks at Judaism as a former Pharisee himself, that they had so twisted the truth that not knowing about God’s righteousness they went about to establish their own righteousness. They thought God was less righteous than He is. They were more righteous than they were and so God would accept their righteousness. THAT IS THE LIE OF ALL FALSE RELIGIONS!
That is why in Chapter 5 Jesus begins the sermon and redefines the complete understanding of how to get into the kingdom of heaven. How to come to God. He says blessed are the poor in spirit theirs is the kingdom of heaven. That was the opposite of Judaism. The Jews thought that the rich, the spiritually mature, that they knew God, that they represented God, were moral, were fastidious in keeping the law. BUT Jesus said if you want to enter My kingdom you have to realize your spiritual bankruptcy, you were at the lowest level of spiritual poverty and had to beg. You’re spiritually bankrupt. You were to mourn at this. Not rejoice over your supposed achievements but mourn over your condition. Then if you wanted to inherit the kingdom you needed to be meek not proud. And if you wanted to be satisfied with true righteousness you have to hunger and thirst for that righteousness. A righteousness you DO NOT possess. This was devastating truth striking at the Jews. You are spiritually bankrupt, you are helpless and hopeless, you have nothing to offer by way of commending yourself to God, you have to hunger and thirst for a righteousness that you do not possess and cannot gain on your own. This was a new kind of teaching for the Jews. Jesus went so far as to say that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the Scribes and Pharisee’s you’ll never enter into the kingdom of heaven and then took it step further and said be PERFECT for our God in heaven is PERFECT! WHOA! Who or what religion offers a spiritual path to perfection as defined by God??? HOW IN THE WORLD ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECT LIKE GOD IS PERFECT? This was salvation by grace through faith. This was "all things are possible with God" but not with man. This was the cross ONLY! This was there is nothing you can do to save yourself. Your works are filthy rags before God. It is a NARROW ROAD! WHY! Because of what was previously said. The self deception of our own self-righteousness not understanding the true righteousness of God. Remember, this is verses that says They EVEN cast out demons in Jesus’ name! They performed miracles in His name. They preached in his name. WORKS in Jesus' name. Even performing miracles giving them positive feedback that they were in God's will and YET, Jesus DID NOT KNOW THEM!!!! They were going through the Broad gate!
Romans 10: 9-10 If we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus with our mouth and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead we will be saved. For with the HEART man believed and is JUSTIFIED and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace are you saved through faith and not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, that any man should boast. For we are created in in His workmanship UNTO good works which He prepared BEFOREHAND.

We are not saved by works and we are NOT KEPT SAVED BY WORKS! WE ARE SAVED FOR WORKS. This is part of our progressive or experiential sanctification and is a WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND NOT OF OURSELVES EVEN! ONLY GOD CAN ACCOMPLISH THIS WORK! NOT EVEN YOU WITHOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT IN YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH GOD’S WORK! PONDER THAT!!! Why do we do these work? Because we love the Lord. Because we want uninterrupted fellowship with him. You are still saved. You don’t lose your salvation. Many say we preach a license to sin. NO WE DO NOT! IN FACT, WE CALL SIN – SIN, But you either believe or you don’t that Jesus’ blood was ALL SUFFICIENT to pay the debt for ALL your sin once and for all and that’s why we no longer need the sacrifice of animals – praise God! There’s no need for the blood of bulls and goats Hebrews tells us. Doing works makes me no more saved than the day Jesus saved me when I was 8 years old and the Holy Spirit came in me. I don’t take salvation on and off like a garment. I am not stronger than God. There is nothing I can do to “unsave” myself.

Some verses to ponder on the simplicity of the cross: 2Cor 11:3 – But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.
What is being said here? We can make the gospel so complicated that even adults can’t understand it but it is really so simple that a child can know it.

2COR 1:12 For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

In other words I cannot brag or boast of anything but my Jesus Who saved me even though I was unworthy. It is by His work at Calvary that I am seen as having the same righteousness as Christ (2 COR 5:21). I bring only my sins and at the cross I fall and thankfully it is not by wisdom that I was saved but by the simplicity of the cross of Christ.

1COR 1:22-23 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom but we preach Christ crucified a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.

The Greeks were all about seeking wisdom but “the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 COR 1:18) and “since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe” (1 COR 1:21). This shows how the wise of the world miss the message of the cross. They see it as foolishness but it is foolishness to those who are perishing because they have rejected the only way to placate the wrath of God.

1COR 2:2 For I decided to know among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Basically there is no need to KNOW ANYTHING ELSE because there is no other name given by which man can be saved, It cannot be simpler than that!

I am glad that the main things are the plain things in the Bible and they are so simple that even a child can understand them but for some reason many adults and most religious organizations reject them outright! “It just cannot be enough” they say! There must be more to it than that. We must do more. They cannot put their trust in God and His plan that was laid before the foundation of the world and was hidden prior to the crucifixion! They cannot wait on God or it is most likely they do not understand the Holy Spirit and how It works in a saved person’s life in God’s timing. So as always let “me” take over and put things right with God. Whether you know it or not you are making yourself out to then BE god. Welcome to Satan’s world and Satan wins and is winning tremendously all over the world by the thousands and millions every day! It’s called the BROAD ROAD!

The Sermon on the Mount is the Ten Commandments kept in the way the Two Great Commandments would keep them. The Two Great Commandments are the backbone of NT ethics. Paul and others import the Sermon into their writings if you look for it. The danger in your position is that you cannot have Christ apart from the Sermon according to John.

Did I say there was something wrong with doing what you felt compelled to do as a precept to the principle? But I should have said precepts should not be set as principles. They are the stepping stones to the principles that transcend the letter. As I’ve often said over the years when a principle has been seen for what it is then the precept is no longer the governing force. Principles are OT & NT laws but the precepts are flexible and individually applied as we are led to understand the deeper meaning contained within scripture. Not just to the sermon on the mt. but in all of the understanding of the bible. Your precepts (or how you act out God’s laws) may not be applicable in every culture but that culture may have another precept that reflects the same principle. Precepts can make living them legal and binding upon you but not reflect what is legal and binding on another person. If that other person sees giving your coat and walking an extra mile as loving God and another. They could lose everything they have many times over thereby not receiving the same results as you but nevertheless they have followed the same principle of loving God and others.

That's OK, just make sure you don't miss out on the Sermon and face the consequences.

davel,

1. To be holy was living right into God.
They had to perform the law to be blessed and right before God or incur the judgement of the law.
The righteousness of the law was the man that does them shall live in them Romans 10:5.
The righteousness by faith is looking to salvation is the cross and resurrection.
The law mentality brought self effort to perform the commandment. We perform the commandment because of the power of the finished work of Christ.

2. Self effort is not a better promise of the NC. They had to do something to attain something. To get mercy they had to show mercy.
Israel was backslidden and the true church is not backslidden.
Backslidden is why they were trodden under the feet of men.
They had to be the pure in heart and be the peacemakers etc.
They had 28 insurrections against Rome.
This first part was meant for Jews to come back into their covenant and be holy before God. The destination was the KoH which was the earthly Kingdom reign.

3. Jesus talked about fulfilling the law and those that would be the least and the greatest in the KoH.
Then he got into the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees and many other things they needed to understand their backslidden condition and what the real truth of the law was and who not to listen to.

4. If the the KoH and the KoG message is misunderstood it can cause the spirit of the law to come upon Christians and cause the struggle and live defeated and rob Israel of its covenant blessings.
Holiness is according to the death, burial and resurrection of Christ not to the law by self effort.
They were to be poor in spirit and hunger and thirst after Christ because they had no power within themselves.
The only requirement we have is to cooperate with Christ in obedience and allow him to do the work. Jerry kelso

You cannot separate him from his teaching.

In Christ we are to exceed the sermon on the mount. For the sermon on the mount was given to Jews who DID NOT have the indwelling Spirit. They could only be obedient in their flesh.

That special grace that the Spirit in us wants us to discover that too many will not realize in this lifetime because many will prefer to play the Word of God to produce good feelings about a matter, rather than discover what its real intent is.

Enjoy your emotions if you wish. Form a bond around how you feel about they way someone tells you what the Word means, while there is a thousand version on the same passage designed to appeal to the emotions in all it variations found in human beings. I would rather secure and find truth.

Its why Jesus said we must deny self and take up our crosses if we are to follow Him. For our natural preferences will need to die as truth gives the grace oriented believer a resurrection life in the transformation of his thinking based upon securing sound teaching...... Who can find it?

One guy without yet understanding the reasons a passage was written will create his own scenario and might find others also enjoying his slant. Viola! The birth of a new mini-denomination has arrived.

The sermon on the mount was given to Jews. It has good principles of truth in there. But, the church has been called to a higher level of living. The meek who walk in their flesh (like the Jews were living) today are being kept down. They are not inheriting the earth.

The inheriting of the earth will be a reality when the Millennium comes, and Jews once again become God's representative people on the new earth. At that time members of the church will be ruling over that earth with Christ as the Head.

Rightly dividing the Word does not always make for bonding with those seeking their own pleasure.

For the time will come when people will not tolerate/put up with/ sound doctrine.
Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number
of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

grace and peace.... In Truth only.

Does transcending the law as Jesus taught make any sense to you?

Lorenedd,

1. We are not under the Mosaic covenant. The Mosaic law had some universal moral principles that apply today, because they transcend the Mosaic law but are not applied the same way judicially.
Moses law was for a specific nation at a specific time, not morality. Jerry Kelso

Exactly, Moses was the representative of the OT and Christ is the representative of the new.
