It's my understanding that the Melchisedec priesthood is reserved for Kings that are priests.

How is that so? did you understand Hebrews 7:3 , I think it is best to understand the chapter.

You are right. The offices of king and priest were seperate among the Jews. But they knew that in the Messiah, both offices would become united. Jesus became the perfect Kingly Priest.
Zechariah 6:9-14
The word of the Lord came to me: “Take from the exiles Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon, and go the same day to the house of Josiah, the son of Zephaniah. Take from them silver and gold, and make a crown, and set it on the head of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest.
