I know it had little, if anything, to do with actually counting illegals. The question is, isn't it also gerrymandering to count illegals in a census for US Citizens? Why should a state or county get more political power for hosting a bunch of non-citizens?
/

non-citizens != illegal and the question scares off citizens, too

There are subversive powers within America that want to break the country as founded. Remake it in their own image. Flooding and overwhelming systems with illegal aliens would help do that.

Thank you for summarizing the Trump Campaign 2020.

Trump, 'not backing down' in effort to count citizens amid census fight, announces executive order

What this means is that the citizenship question isn't going to be on the 2020 Census, because the Supreme Court completely screwed that with their ruling, so fair enough. Everyone could sit around and scream about how unfair it was or how dumb the ruling was, but that doesn't change the outcome either way. With this executive order, that doesn't really matter now.

Every department and agency in the federal government will need to provide the Department of Commerce with all requested records regarding the number of citizens and non-citizens in the country, and then the Census Bureau can use this information--along with information collected through the questionnaire--to create the official census. This basically means that the functionality of the question is going to be a part of the census whether they like it or not, it won't even need to be a part of the actual questionnaire to do it, and it will actually be more accurate for it, since it's very easy to just lie or fail to hand in the census.

So, the real question is, if they could always do it this way, why not do it before?

.....because obviously, this entire "fight" was for show.

They just want people to be considered "residents" as opposed to citizens and want them to be able to vote.
I haven’t heard anyone suggest that “They” want this other than Rush Limbaugh. Whoever “They” is.

Don't you know that we do have permanent as well as guest resident aliens, here legally, who don't vote? "Resident" is the proper, legal term for non-citizens who live here legally.

The same people who run sanctuary cities to circumvent our citizenship laws and undercut efforts to apprehend illegal aliens.
What do you want to call legal non-citizens who live here? "Dern furriners"?

Sure, but that's not what motivates the desire to stop collecting data that might expose the truth about illegal immigration in America.

Truth..? You do realise that the Supremes ruled against Donnie’s people because they lied about their reasons for the question..?

Truth...?

At some point, classifying an argument as ignorant shifts to being purely irresponsible as it deliberately ignores the truth. The citizenship question will tell you nothing about illegal immigration, but that actually does not matter because that was not the reason given for adding the question; constantly mentioning illegal immigration is really off-topic from this case.

The reason they gave for adding the question had zero to do with immigration. The reason the question was blocked was because the reason given was a lie. A recently deceased Republican operative did a study and concocted a plan to add the question to the census in order to artificially increase the population of non-Hispanic whites by causing undercounts in immigrant communities. Those are the facts, that was their literal plan, up to the deceased operative creating a ruse that the question was related to the Voting Rights Act. If you’re going to discuss this topic, then stay on topic and stop mentioning illegal immigration, which has nothing to do with this case.

Which the citizenship question on the census would do nothing to resolve. And which the question was certainly not designed to do.

Again, why do you object to the term "resident"? How would you describe legal, non-citizen people who live here on a permanent or temporary basis?

How is the citizenship question expected to do this?

Well, the very first census had a similar problem with a certain group... IIRC, they compromised by declaring them to be three-fifths of a person apiece.
