Of course you will not find great diversity either. Same with Hawaii
Someone once told me that that what you are describing is prejudice, not racism. When I was in Hawaii, I noticed there was a lot of racism against white people, especially from the native Polynesians. But you will find racism and bigotry everywhere. Thankfully, true cases of racism is not common and ought to be denounced in every situation.
Can't believe this thread. Hawaiians are notorious for their racism against Haloes (the soulless ones, i.e., white people).
I see where you are coming from. While stationed at MCAS Kaneohe Bay I found that many of the locals had a lot of prejudice against outsiders (anyone not from the island). Furthermore, they despised the military. Furthermore, of all the military branches they despised the most, it was the Marines. Now I am not saying that all local Hawaiians have the same views, it is just that as a U.S Marine "outsider", my time there wasn't pleasant. When I first got on station we had a safety brief where we were briefed of the local gangs who racially targeted white people. Fortunately I was not harassed as much because I am Hispanic. But my other, more white looking, comrades had received much more harassment. Can't believe this thread. Hawaiians are notorious for their racism against Haloes (the soulless ones, i.e., white people).
And that disparaging is not just foreign and ethnic... we see it in military towns across the country. But it goes both ways. Locals are not always welcoming toward the military. They want the money from the base... but not the men and women who bring it.No they are not. And furthermore, haole means non-Polynesian, alien, foreign; not white. And having lived there for several years, I suspect most of the natives were prejudiced against military, at least that's what I've seen. And our military is notorious for disparaging native populations wherever they go, so I'm suspecting some sort of projection, frankly.
Although I cannot say that all Hawaiians are racists, do not be deceived by believing that Hawaii doesn't have problems with racism, bigotry, and prejudice. Whites are the minority in Hawaii and they are the primary targets of racism and discrimination. Yes, Hawaii is a racial paradise....if you are not white. No they are not. And furthermore, haole means non-Polynesian, alien, foreign; not white. And having lived there for several years, I suspect most of the natives were prejudiced against military, at least that's what I've seen. Well the poster beneath your post says he was not bothered as much because he's Hispanic, so...No they are not. And furthermore, haole means non-Polynesian, alien, foreign; not white.
If you think I'm projecting, just use the internet. Search "Hawaiian racism". The amount and level of ugliness is shocking. And having lived there for several years, I suspect most of the natives were prejudiced against military, at least that's what I've seen. Love that episode.
While still a minority, interracial marriages have risen steadily over the last several decades.. This is from Pew Research:

And correspondingly, the number multiracial children has also risen:

If these trends continue (and I see no reason why they would not,) in several centuries, most of the US population could be mixed race. I know traditionalists will deplore the idea of increasing racial/ethnic homogenization. But it's probably inevitable.
OTOH, Homo sapiens is an instinctively tribalistic species. Even if all people in the future are of mixed race, we will just find other reasons to despise and distrust each other.
One more thing. I am highly suspicious of people who claim they are free from what I consider a universal tendency in all men
Human nature does not need religion to despise fellow humans.Well, we got religion, for that!
Yep. While walking down the street a group of Polynesian men threw a handful of loose change at my buddy (who was white) and didn't bother me (Hispanic).Well the poster beneath your post says he was not bothered as much because he's Hispanic, so...

I don't have a racist bone in my body but...Italian sausage is better than Polish sausage. All too many times I have heard someone say "I don't have a racist bone in my body but ........" What follows is a racist rant ---- every single time.
K-Bay?When I was in Hawaii,
there was locals, tourists,
then there was haoles.
Back then haoles where not much
welcome on the local side of the island .
The nerve!Someone once told me that that what you are describing is prejudice, not racism. When I was in Hawaii, I noticed there was a lot of racism against white people, especially from the native Polynesians.
