Need help finding this: Exodus and subsequent bathing practices

Someone told me that during the Exodus, the multitude still had to bathe; it was required. Yet, given the landscape, their bathing would have necessarily been public (too many people, not enough water.)

Can anyone give me scriptures or arguments for any of these ideas?

Perhaps they were separated by gender. That would make the most sense. Perhaps they split the men from the women and children.
