Parkland shooting survivor says Harvard rescinded his admission over racial slurs he made two years ago

A Parkland shooting survivor and pro-Second Amendment activist said Harvard University rescinded his acceptance as a result of racist remarks he made before the 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

Kyle Kashuv disclosed the rescinding Monday in a Twitter thread, acknowledging that he and classmates, then 16, made "abhorrent racial slurs" in digital messages almost two years ago "in an effort to be as extreme and shocking as possible."

He wrote an apology for his remarks and posted a screenshot of what appears to be a June 3 letter from Harvard Dean of Admissions William Fitzsimmons, rescinding his admission.

I feel sorry for this kid, but when I consider the lack of sympathy for other kids and how some people want to treat toddlers like adults, worthy of having guns trained on them, why should this guy garner any sympathy? There are plenty of more deserving students that deserve a slot at the college?

The young person had a second chance: he survived.

Harvard is within its legal and ethical boundaries to deny admission for his social record.

I agree with the general gist, but in this particular case the kid in question has made comments (as I infer) that part of his growing up and getting better was being shot at.

If you're the kind of racist who requires a true threat of death to stop being a racist I'm more on the fence about whether you deserve any more chances.

Harvard can afford to be pretty selective in who it admits.

A vast number of academically talented students won't have a chance for Harvard ... because they don't posses the necessary finance.

There are plenty of other schools ...

Yup. He's the same age I am. He's not a kid. He's an adult. He knew at 16 that the racist things he spewed out were wrong but spewed them out anyway bc he wanted to provoke ppl, he wanted to be a jerk. Ppl who went to HS with him said he was notorious for that so it wasn't just what's written down that's the solid evidence. WHO puts that stuff on Google Docs though? That's stupid on an epic level. The petulant & totally moronic things he's said since getting his admission rescinded totally proves that Harvard made the right call!

Agreed. The Central Park Five, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, they were all kids and not given the same regard as some are with this man. You're right, he's an adult and there are consequences for our actions.

I have no sympathy for the guy. His classmates said he talked like this regularly. He has said he is embarrassed and sorry, but doesn’t want to accept the consequences of his actions and is acting incredibly entitled.

Too bad for this chap that he learned too late that actions have consequences. I tell youth all the time that their choices today open or close doors for them tomorrow. It's a tough lesson. I hope he has learned it now, but I fear he has not.

I don't know his story but too many grow up with a sense of entitlement nourished by participation trophies and parents bailing them out of scrapes. Then one day it doesn't work anymore and they can't figure out why.

I'd have some sympathy for him if it was remarks made and caught on video by someone else. But someone stupid enough to make them in written form on the internet or when he knew he was being recorded just might not be bright enough for an Ivy League education.
