Indeed, its cultural arrogance combined with a sense of "Galileo and the Pope"- kind of thing. I'll go with Aquinas over this mediocre theologian of a Pope we got any day of the week...

I will need to deeply study this. I believe God has given broad authority to the state to maintain order, virtually by any means necessary. This includes determining capital crimes and issuing capital punishments.

I believe the principle of it is very difficult to assail.

I can, however, acknowledge that the practice of the death penalty is deeply flawed in many cases, greatly in need of reform. But the Cardinal seems to be making moral judgments of the death penalty itself and I'm simply not prepared to go that far at this time.

This is a mistake.
I am not in favor of capital punishment, but I can see a rare circumstance for it. One would be wise to buy a few copies of the Catechism NOW before the next printing.

I agree it should be rare. But it should always be an option.
And btw, I have two copies of the CCC. I’ll probably snap up another after things are officially changed. Just to compare.

I'll skip the new edition, even for comparison. But I'll give the present edition as gifts. So I need to buy a few more.
