God promised to give Abrham's offspring the land of Israel as an "everlasting" possession and that all nations would be blessed through his offspring.
Genesis 12:1-3 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Genesis 17:6-8 will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. And I will give to you and to your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their God.”
God promised to give Isaac's offspring the land of Israel and that all nations would be blessed through his offspring
Genesis 26:3-4 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,
God promised Jacob to give the land of Israel to his offspring as an "everlasting" possession and that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through his offspring.
Genesis 28:13-14 And behold, the Lord stood above itc and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Genesis 48:4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’
***It is very important to notice, no tribal allotments are promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is only promised that their offspring will inherit the land as an everlasting possession.
The divisions of the land are instructed in the old covenant. Again, the divisions of the land are NOT found in the promise to Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob, but in the Law of Moses.
Numbers 26:52-56 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Among these the land shall be divided for an inheritance according to the number of names. “To the larger group you shall increase their inheritance, and to the smaller group you shall diminish their inheritance; each shall be given their inheritance according to those who were numbered of them. “But the land shall be divided by lot. They shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers. “According to the selection by lot, their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller groups.”
Numbers 34:13-15 So Moses commanded the Israelites, “Apportion this land by lot as an inheritance, which the LORD commanded to be given to the nine and a half tribes. For the tribes of the Reubenites and Gadites, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, have already received their inheritance. These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance across the Jordan from Jericho, toward the sunrise.”
The old covenant was made obsolete at the cross. Thus, the need for land divisions was no longer necessary.
Hebrews 8:13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Hebrews 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second
Hebrews 10:9 he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second.
The old covenant being made obsolete at the cross removed the instructions for land division requirements. This does in no way affect the promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Why? Because the promises (PLURAL) were made to Abraham and his offspring. The offspring is Christ.
**Thus, it is to Christ that the land was promised as an everlasting possession. It is through Christ that all nations would be blessed.
Galatians 3:16 Now the promiseS were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.
