So I figured the title would get your attention! Let me open by saying I'm totally not for women's ordination of any kind - be it in the Apostolic priesthood of Orthodox or Catholics, or even the pastoral positions of protestant churches - it's just a no go.

But, in looking at the priesthood of all believers, women are included there - correct? Any thoughts on this?

If we are all called to be a royal priesthood in this fashion - women are not excluded - correct? And any expanding on what the priesthood of believers entails or looks like is appreciated too.

Markie, here's the problem. The Biblical phrase, priesthood of all believers doesn't refer to ordinations. It doesn't refer literally to the priest, pastor, minister, clergy, etc.

In the Old Testament, the priests were selected from one particular Jewish tribe, but with the Church of Christ, the principle is that all of us have a role to play in the life of the church. But that doesn't mean all of us are to be pastors, etc. or even eligible. The New Testament is clear about that misunderstanding.

The way that most churches apply the principle (priesthood of all believers) is by giving the membership, the congregation, a meaningful role in deciding the leadership and policies of the church by, for example, voting on whom to call as pastor or having the day to day administration of the congregation be put in the hands of a committee of people drawn from the membership.

While Israel retained the idea of a 'priesthood of all believers', they did not do away with the sacerdotal priesthood (i.e., the priests who would actually do the sacrifices in the temple), which was all male.

(Not an exact quote from it, as I've slightly modified it to fit the thread topic, but you can find discussion of this idea of a priesthood of all believers vs. a sacerdotal priesthood in one of the episodes of Fr. Andrew S. Damick's podcast series "Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy" on AFR, though I can't recall off-hand which exact episode he addresses this in. But there's your EO reference, since I myself am not EO. He is Antiochian Orthodox, if I recall correctly.)

I figured this - and wasn't trying to start a "women should be priests" argument. If that argument arises, I am firmly on the side against women's ordination.

But, is it fair to say that the priesthood of believers speaks of us making offerings of all that we do, sacrificing our own ways and wants, for God's ways and desires?

And the idea that we are to take it as seriously as the ministerial priesthood?

yes, but what actually makes our lives a sacrifice to and for God is holy communion, which both men and women partake of equally.

At the risk of showing my simpleton brain - why does holy communion make our lives a sacrifice?
