Okay, so I stumbled upon this metal band, allegedly from Poland, that uses Orthodox imagery. Batushka - Wikipedia I thought it all looked pretty neat because I have toyed with the idea before that a lot of our stuff would make interesting aesthetics for a metal band. However, I can't really seem to be able to find any information on the band. Are they honouring Orthodoxy? Are they blasphemous? Etc. Like, I obviously would not feel comfortable listening to something that is mocking our faith.

Does anybody know anything about them?

looks pretty satanic to me

I did try listening to some of their songs. Something did seem...off. I switched to regular Orthodox chant instead. I'm likely going to play it safe and stay away from this band as much as I love the aesthetic look they're going for.

From the wikipedia page :

Both recordings were released through "Witching Hour Productions", owned by Vocalist Bartłomiej Krysiuk.

Batushka - Wikipedia

I used to really like metal, hardcore and rap music, so I know how challenging it is to stop listening to dark music in general.

I'll listen to pretty much any music as long as it sounds good. This band has cool aesthetics and actually sounds good musically so it's a shame that they're apparently mocking our faith :(.

I found a thread on Reddit talking about them where a commenter said the following:
"A recurring theme throughout their entire album seems to be the esoteric concept of self divination, in contrast to the traditional Christian view of worshipping god. While not necessarily mocking towards the church, in itself the lyrics are rather blasphemous (if only from distorting the actual 'holy' texts). The lyrics of the first 'litany' are actually that of a Psalm which is turned inside out. All the instances where there should be a 'You' (as in the person of god) they are replaced simply with an 'I'. Same goes in greater lines with the entire album."
"If you were curious of their message; it is quite clear they oppose Christianity. Maybe too afraid to mock the Catholic Church, as in after all we are talking about a Polish band here, they turned to Orthodoxy (that also speaks a bit of a anti-russian sentiment manifested in Poland as a whole). "

Yeah, I know what you mean.

It’s like I would be jamming out to some tunes and then I would hear lyrics that were overtly blasphemous and then other times The Holy Spirit would reveal the covert \ occult stuff some music artists would do like channeling and using sorcery etc.

This has happened so many times to me with movies, martial arts, music, politics etc.

I’ve even noticed it in academia with people who claim to be atheists like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens.

I don't personally think like that. I listened to all kinds of music in my life and I don't have the luxury of the "before I was Orthodox" spiel :D

Everything is permitted, even as not everything is profitable.

Would I encourage anyone to embrace satanist philosophies? Of course not. But some death and black metal sounds really good... why wouldn't I enjoy that, lest I fall in obscurantist superstition and by that give the enemy more power.

Bur honestly I think trendy pop and the Superbowl mid-game show or how you call it have more occult influences and techniques embedded in them than metal. I am wary of that stuff.

Oh, I like the sound and feel of the music for sure but there is definitely some dark spiritual things happening during the creation of the music.

Can I ask for more about this?

The most obvious thing that you can actually see with your physical eyes is when they use Mudras and Hand Seals to open doors to the spirit world. It’s done in the occult, Hinduism, martial arts etc.

There’s other stuff also, but that is one thing that is the most noticeable. These people are not going to just come out and say who they really are because they have no moral convictions about lying or using deception.

I’ve seen it in every denomination and sect of Christianity and yes even in Orthodoxy unfortunately.

Tares among the wheat and goats among the sheep.

Even the disciples had to put up with Judas and the early Church had to put up with Arian Bishops so it’s nothing new.

Most of the time The Holy Spirit will show you who is legit and who isn’t even before they show you with outward manifestations.

One of my friends from my parish actually converted to Orthodoxy after they found and listened to this band.

A lot of strange things can be used to bring people to God. I came to Orthodoxy because I liked Pope Francis. Yes, let that sink in...

I'm not exactly superstitious myself. I trust my instinct. If something feels "wrong" then I simply do not engage in it. Same applies to music as well. I listen to a lot of metal and rarely do I have to turn away from a band, but occasionally it does happen. The band Powerwolf was one such example.

They're pretty explicitly anti-Christian. I looked up the lyrics to some of their songs and there's stuff mocking the Eucharist and other Christian sacraments.

Pope Francis is a liberal extremist. He’s driving people OUT of Catholicism to our Orthodox faith in droves! Thanks, Frank!
