A song from the depths of the sex industry. I included a lyric video, because the words are kind of hard to understand, and also the official video. Just be careful who's around when you watch the official video; it's somewhat provocative, might be very disturbing; clearly something made by someone from the sex industry. It really shows how a girl trapped in that system would see herself.

May God bless us all, especially the trapped & the trappers, the bystanders & the fighters, of this awful industry!

UPDATE: After some research, it seems as if Maria Brink (the singer) was sexually abused repeatedly, and details of her childhood are unclear, but it seems as if she wasn't in the sex industry (but wasn't much better). Still, these songs show the helplessness someone can feel in such situations, especially when she was abused from such a young age.

Here's another one: Big Bad Wolf. The video's more intense than the one from harlot.

Here's the lyrics, some of which will be censored by CF, but they really get the point across of the internal conflict of someone who's been forced to harlot for years:

Even in these chains, you can't stop me.
Even in these chains, you can't stop me.
Even in these chains, you can't stop me.
Even in these chains, you can't stop me!
Once upon a time
There was a nasty, little piggy filled with pride and greed
Once upon a time
There was an evil, little piggy typical disease
You see this little pig is slowly becoming my own worst enemy.
You see this evil pig she's a blood, blood, blood sucking part of me
Everywhere I go, you go along with me (she said)
Anything you get, is all because of me (I said)
Everything I do, you do along with me (she said)
No matter where you run, you cannot hide from me
She's got a hold on me
Maybe she is just what they want me to be
Even in these chains, you can't stop me.
Even in these chains, you can't stop me!
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
I've been everywhere that you've been
Now I've got nothing to lose and everything to win
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
I'm already under your skin
'Cause I'm the big bad wolf, now let the games begin
You see I am the wolf,
And this dirty, little piggy lives inside of me.
You see every now and then,
I forget which one that I want and which one that I need.
I have come to realize
That both of them have become a necessity
I now have come to realize
That I become which animal I choose to feed
Anything I say you lie along with me. (she said)
Every song you sing is all because of me (I said)
Anytime I cry you always laugh at me. (she said)
No matter what you do you will belong to me
She's got a hold on me,
Maybes she's just what they want me to be
Even in these chains, you can't stop me.
Even in these chains, you can't stop me!
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
I've been everywhere that you've been
Now I've got nothing to lose and everything to win
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
I'm already under your skin
'Cause I'm the big bad wolf, now let the games begin
Oh man, all these voices
I just can't, get the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] out of my head!
I can't, I can't, I can't
Even with these chains, you can't stop me.
Even with these chains, you can't stop me
Even with these chains, you can't stop me
Even in these chains, you won't break me
Even in these chains, you won't stop me
Even in these chains, you won't break me
Even in these chains, you won't take me
Even in these chains, you won't haunt me
Pig! Pig!
Pig, pig!
Stay the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse], stay the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse], stay the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] out of my head!
She's got a hold on me,
Maybe she is just what they want me to be
Even in these chains, you can't stop me.
Even in these chains, you can't stop me!
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
I've been everywhere that you've been
Now I've got nothing to lose and everything to win
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
Would you let me in?
Pig, pig!
I'm already under your skin
'Cause I'm the big bad wolf, now let the games begin
'Cause I'm the big bad wolf, now let the games begin!
'Cause I'm the big bad wolf, now let the games begin

May God free us all from every form of lust & exploitation!

You kind of have the meaning of the first song backwards, which is understandable at first listen because the imagery and video do tend to pull the listener that way at first. I think that is part of her purpose. The song is not about her; it's about who she is addressing. Instead of the song being about her as a sexual being (or abused being), it's really about the objectivization of women and the labels that hypocritical people (often men) place on women to try and control them while the men are really projecting their own sin onto women. "harlot" is one of the most painful words men use to do that.

The double standard was pretty open when I was growing up - a guy who slept around was admired while a girl who did so was a tramp. Many sexual assault perpetrators got off by questioning the clothing, or actions, or even location of their victim. The whispers of how a successful actress or businesswoman got there, which would never be brought up with a man.

That meaning is clear in the second verse:
I'm the one that you need and fear
Now that you're hooked it's all becoming clear
That all your judgements that you placed on me
Was a reflection of discovery
So maybe next time when you cast your stones
From the shadows of the dark unknown
You will crawl up from your hiding place
Take a look in the mirror, see the truth in your face.

As Maria has said before, "harlot" is just a label thrown at women, not the truth of who she is. The song was written to be an empowering song to women to not fall victim to the lies and attempts to bring them down and control them. Note she never said she was the names called in the song, she said "I am your sinner" for example. He is seeing her as exactly what he is - he owns his perception, but it is not her reality.

That makes sense; I was confused about the second verse, but you pieced it together a little better. Thank you!

May God bless us all!

Maria is a very intelligent lady and, as you pointed out both here and in another thread, was very wounded in her past. I wish she didn't sexualize so much - musically I really like In This Moment, they are one of my favorites. I guess it's somewhat of a way to cope and try to take back control of her life, hopefully she'll find the real healing someday and can put her musical genius to other topics.

For what it's worth, from our pictures I see we share a common concern. Keep up the good work!

I can't imagine the courage it takes to be able to sexualize like that for everyone to see, after being sexually abused so badly in the past. The costumes in the videos do make it much more powerful, though.

I was very disappointed to see that she was ranked "10 Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock". There's no denying that God gave her beauty, but so much of her story & her songs are, as you pointed out, against the objectification of women, and someone decides to put her on some list like that. Power of prayer now.

Thank you for your posts & support, and may God bless us all!

I'm with you on that. I find it a bit oddwhen they play that song in concert and I see some guys looking at her leering, thinking about her in terms of the title of the song - never realizing she is singing about their objectification of her.

Something else you might find interesting. Maria also performed in a song Gravity with Papa Roach. Lead singer of Papa Roach, Jacoby Shaddix, became a Christian a few years back. You start seeing that influence in some of his songs like this, with themes of redemption, forgiveness and brokenness from sin.

[Verse 1: Jacoby Shaddix]
I was there on the day truth died
Blood on my hands throw 'em up in the sky
I was the number one sinner, no less
My life was a lie, and my wish was a death
I fell in love with the ways of the world
Money, the fame, the booze, the girls
But I couldn't stay faithful, if I've tried
I turned in to a devil, you could see it in my eyes
I blacked out, told everything I ever did
I couldn't take all the lies I was living with
I broke your heart, woke up the next day
My bags outside, yelling, "Get the hell away!
You're not a husband, not a father, just a pig
And you can't never change all the things that you did!"
That's when I knew it, it wouldn't last
You never get away, when you're running from the past

[Chorus: Maria Brink/Jacoby Shaddix]
I will fly into outer space
I float away, but you're my gravity
I will die to love another day
We rise again and lose our gravity

[Verse 2: Jacoby Shaddix]
I'm a broken man, I'm full of sin
I'm sick of all this hell that I'm living in
And I can't escape it, this is how it feels
When you try to numb the pain with a thousand pills
You tore me down, wished that I was dead
Said you wanna sleep alone in another bed
But when I push away, you only pull me closer
It's only over when we both wanna say it's over
I gotta change this is not who I am
I wanna start over wanna try this again
You're everything I need, everything I'm not
So pull the trigger, give me one more shot
[Chorus: Maria Brink/Jacoby Shaddix]
I will fly into outer space
I float away, but you're my gravity
I will die to love another day
We rise again and lose our gravity

[Verse 3: Maria Brink]
You love me, you hate me, you kiss me, you break me
You lifted me up just to watch as you broke me
You promised me, looked me straight in the eyes
No matter what you say, I don't know truth from the lies
I helped you up, like I always do
I forgave you for your sins and I carried you through them
No matter how hard we fought, we always knew
You will bleed for me, and I will bleed for you

[Bridge: Jacoby Shaddix]
Fly into outer space
I float away, but you're my gravity
Die to love another day
We rise again and lose our gravity

[Chorus: Maria Brink/Jacoby Shaddix]
I will fly into outer space
I float away, but you're my gravity
I will die to love another day
We rise again and lose our gravity
I will fly into outer space
I float away, but you're my gravity
I will die to love another day
We rise again and lose our gravity
