Theresa May has said she will quit as Conservative leader on 7 June, paving the way for a contest to decide a new prime minister.

In an emotional statement, she said she had done her best to deliver Brexit and it was a matter of "deep regret" that she had been unable to do so.

Mrs May said she would continue to serve as PM while a Conservative leadership contest takes place.

The party said it hoped a new leader could be in place by the end of July.

It means Mrs May will still be prime minister when US President Donald Trump makes his state visit to the UK at the start of June.

Asked about the prime minister's announcement, Mr Trump said: "I feel badly for Theresa. I like her very much. She's a good woman. She worked very hard. She's very strong."

She had one of the toughest assignments of any Primeminister since Churchill. She carried out her role with determination and resilience. She will not be regarded as one of the great Primeministers because BREXIT poisoned her time in office and is in fact a poisoned chalice which she passes on to whoever succeeds her. Maybe if she had fought a better campaign in the last election she could have strengthened her position for the BREXIT negotiations but she leaves a weak and divided party leading a country that is itself torn right down the middle by BREXIT. I just hope that the Labour party now get rid of Corbyn then there might be some way to resolve this BREXIT mess across the parties. We await the European election results which are in effect the second referendum on BREXIT that so many wanted. If Remain wins that vote then REVOCATION rather than BREXIT should be the goal of the next Primeminister.

I thought Brexit had already passed last year, why wasn't it implemented? Maybe if it had, May would still be PM.

The story is long and painful. But basically the divisions in her own party, the fact that her government relies on an Irish party that did not benefit from the negotiated agreement with the EU and a stubborn and blinkered opposition leader would be the top three for me.
