Disclaimer: To be up front and clear, I do not subscribe to pre-tribulationism but believe as per the Scriptures that there is one revelation in glory and one gathering of one elect, and that this is a post-tribulational event.

With that being said, let us look at the following passage.

Matthew 24:22 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

How will this happen and how much shorter will those days be?

Revelation 8:12 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
The fourth angel sounded, and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a third of it, and the night in the same way.

The consensus among our English translations seems to be that this speaks about a supernatural "reducing" of the luminosity of the celestial lights. That it speaks about normal 24 hours days that become darkened for a third of their duration. But if you've studied what Scripture speaks concerning the state of the earth during the tribulation, it only becomes clear that John is using knowledge contemporary to the first century in order to explain this phenomenon he is seeing.

Let us go to the Greek. The word of interest is "shine".

Strong's 5316
phainó: to bring to light, to cause to appear
Original Word: φαίνω
Part of Speech: Verb
Transliteration: phainó
Phonetic Spelling: (fah'-ee-no)
Definition: to bring to light, to cause to appear
Usage: (a) act: I shine, shed light, (b) pass: I shine, become visible, appear, (c) I become clear, appear, seem, show myself as.

NASB Translation
appear (5), appeared (7), appears (1), became evident (1), become (1), flashes (1), noticed (2), seem (1), seen (2), shine (3), shines (1), shining (4), shown (1), visible (1).

The Greek interlinear in fact uses "appear", this is the root meaning. Depending on textual indicators, "shine" might be the word that is adopted - but what is John truly speaking of here?

Follow the language. Part of the celestial bodies are "struck" so as to make a third of them "not appear". When a name is "struck" out of the Book of Life, it no longer "appears". Understanding that the Apostle John was a man of Scripture and used Biblical language, in what context should we be viewing the celestial bodies?

Genesis 1:14-15 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years...

The meaning is missed when the passage is interpreted literally. The celestial bodies are in fact not being physically affected in any way, this is apocalyptic language that is in actuality referring to the passing of time.

Even if we were to interpret this literally, how will it work? What "third part" of the celestial bodies could be "struck" so as to make a third of the day and nights completely without light?

What John is telling us, essentially, is that our 24 hour days will become 16 hour days.

There is not a single change made to the amount of days themselves, the prophecies all stand. But the total time needed to make it through the tribulation period is simply accelerated by a third.

Some theoretical numbers, keep in mind that this is based on the relative passing of time:
Daniel's Mid 70th Week = 3.5 years / 1290 days becomes 2.45 years / 903 days
[ Which is synonymous with... ]
Revelation's Reign of the Beast = 42 months becomes 29.4 months

Now the big question, how does this happen?

Part 2 to follow!

Time for a little science.

What determines the length of a day? How fast the earth is rotating. If it's rotating faster, days are shorter. So something catastrophic happens with the earth so as to increase earth's rotational speed (angular velocity) and remove an entire 8 hours from our regular 24 hour days.

Can an earthquake do this?

How the Japan Earthquake Shortened Days on Earth

2011 Japan Earthquake - Magnitude 8.9 - day shortened by 1.8 micro seconds
2010 Chile Earthquake - Magnitude 8.8 - day shortened by 1.26 micro seconds
2004 Sumatra Earthquake - Magnitude 9.1 - day shortened by 6.8 micro seconds

Now obviously, these are negligible amounts. A micro second is a millionth of a second.

But what about the kind of seismic events spoken of in prophecy?

Revelation 6:12-17 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

Isaiah 24:19-20 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
The earth is broken asunder,
The earth is split through,
The earth is shaken violently.
The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard
And it totters like a shack,
For its transgression is heavy upon it,
And it will fall, never to rise again.

In short, the kind of seismic cataclysm that is taking place here vastly exceeds our ability to even measure.

What is 8 hours in micro seconds? 28,800,000,000 - compared to the mere 1.8 of the 2011 Japanese earthquake.

That gives an idea for proportions.

This phenomenon can be explained using science. It is known as the conservation of angular momentum. The formula is as follows:

L=Iω

Where L is the angular momentum of the rotating body, I is its moment of inertia, and ω is its angular velocity. The angular momentum must be conserved at all times, thus for the angular velocity to increase, the moment of inertia must decrease. How does the moment of inertia decrease? This happens when mass is distributed closer to the body's axis of rotation, in a way making it "easier" to rotate.

Planet earth is just that, a planet - and a pretty big one.

It's estimated weight is 5.9274 x 10^24 kg, thats 5,927,400,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg

A mass this size exerts a strong force on itself, this is what is known as gravity.

What happens when you have all that mass in the earth's crust being pulverized? It gets broken up and the earth literally collapse in on itself due to gravity. This is precisely it, an unfathomable amount of earth's mass gets distributed closer to its axis of rotation, so much so that earth's rotation speeds up to eliminate 8 hours of the day.

Part 2 to follow!
That was fulfilled with the short 5 month siege and destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70ad.

Matthew 24:1
And Jesus coming out, departed from the Temple.
And His Disciples approached Him to show to Him the buildings of the Temple.
Mark 13:1
And He going forth out of the Temple,
one of His Disciples is saying to Him “Teacher! behold! what manner of stones and what manner of buildings
Luke 21:5
and of some saying concerning the Temple,
that to goodly stones and votive-offerings<334> it has been adorned<2885>

Matthew 24:22
And if those days not shortened<2856>, not ever was saved all flesh.
yet because of the chosen, shall those days shall be being shortened.
Mark 13:20
and if Lord not shorten the days, not ever was saved all flesh,
but because of the chosen, whom He chooses, He shortens the days.

Revelation 9: Tormented 5 MONTHS and death fleeing 70ad

Revelation 9:5 And was given to them that not they should be killing them, but that they should be being tormented five months

The Destruction of Jerusalem - George Peter Holford, 1805AD

...............This memorable siege terminated on the eighth day of the ninth month, A.D. 70 : its duration was nearly five months, the Romans having invested the city on the fourteenth day of the fourth month, preceeding.
Before their final demolition, however, Titus took a survey of the city and its fortifications ; and, while contemplating their impregnable strength, could not help ascribing his success to the peculiar interposition of the ALMIGHTY HIMSELF. "Had not God himself (exclaimed he) aided out operations, and driven the Jews from their fortresses, it would have been absolutely impossible to have taken them ; for what could men, and the force of engines, have done against such towers as these ?"

Time for a little science.

What determines the length of a day? How fast the earth is rotating...
God the Creator ordained a day to be from sunset to sunset, and to include one period of dark and one period of light, as the heavens rotate around the “fixed in place” earth.
God the Word, who made all things, declared a Day to be 18 parts, with light/day and dark/night having each 9 equal parts at spring and fall equinoxes, and the light/day to have 12 parts and the dark/night to have 6 parts at summer solstice and the reverse at winter solstice, as measured from the belly button of earth, which is where Jerusalem is.
You can read how His calendar is set in the heavens from the beginning in the book of Enoch, in “The Book of the courses of the Luminaries of heaven, the relations of each, according to their classes, their dominion and their seasons, and according to their months, which Uriel, the holy angel” ...showed Enoch.
Enoch chapter 72
Available online (I will link later).
Earth is not a planet. Planet means “wandering star”, and it does not move.
The light and dark rotated around the earth from day 1 of creation, before the heavens were stretched out between the cut in two, primal waters of this globe’s creation.
So on day 2 of creation the light was stretched out from this globe, between the waters, before there was even the “dry (named “earth”) called into being from the elements of the waters.
That is in Genesis 1.
So when the day and the night cease shining for one third their parts, as Revelation states, then the days will be “Cut short”, and be 1/3 their present lengths...

The book of Enoch shows us that, as Isaiah also does, later, that the earth will be moved out of her place in those days, so that is how God accomplishes the “cut short” days.
